$2 Million in Capital Investments at Windham Mountain for 17/18 Season Resort Invests in Efficiency of Snowmaking and Grooming Systems

WINDHAM MOUNTAIN RESORT, N.Y. (October 26, 2017) Windham Mountain Resort has continued its commitment to snowmaking efficiency and environmental consciousness with a new system of fully automated snow guns, nearly three miles of new snowmaking pipe, and the addition of a new PistenBully 400 Winch Cat to the grooming fleet.

Improvements to snowmaking will have the most impact on Wiseacres, a popular intermediate trail that winds through a wooded area on the ski area’s West Peak. It will now have 100% snowmaking coverage with the new permanent, fully automated HKD snow guns. Beginner terrain on Wonderama has also been updated and upper portions of the Warm Up Park has the new system installed, as well. In addition to the new snow guns, nearly three miles of new snowmaking pipe has been installed, contributing to efficiency by ensuring there are no leaks of the water and air being pumped up the mountain.

Ted Davis, Director of Mountain Operations, explains that in a warming climate, opportunities to make snow are fewer than they used to be, sometimes only lasting for a couple of hours when they do arise. This new system will allow his team to take advantage of even the short windows of opportunity they see, with the “push of a button”, rather than the old system of set up and break down. Ted also notes the new HKD guns will greatly reduce the amount of runoff experienced with older systems. “We’ll be able to make snow earlier, faster, and better”, he says.

Windham’s state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly grooming fleet of five machines sees upgrades each season. This year, it’s in the form of a new PistenBully 400 Winch Cat. The high-performance groomer complies with Tier 4 of the emissions standards set forth by the EPA, making it the most efficient engine available. Whereas traditional groomers can only push snow down the mountain, the 4.4 ton pulling force of the winch on this machine will allow the grooming team to push snow back up the mountain, creating optimal conditions for skiers and riders.

Windham Mountain Resort remains committed to providing the best snow possible for guests, while maintaining its sense of environmental responsibility and efficiency within the snowmaking and grooming departments. With the new additions, the upcoming season is already proving to be one for the books. Look for updates on opening day at windhammountain.com, and on Windham Mountain Resort’s facebook page.

Windham Mountain Resort Unveils Terrain Based Learning Ground Breaking Method Ensures the Success of First Time Skiers and Riders

WINDHAM MOUNTAIN RESORT, N.Y. (November 14, 2017) Windham Mountain Resort is proud to be one of only forty ski resorts in North America offering Terrain Based Learning, an award-winning new method of introducing new guests to the world of snow sports. This game-changing revolution for the snow sports industry removes the traditional fears associated with the first time sliding on snow and makes learning to ski or snowboard easier and more fun.

Learning to ski or snowboard at Windham now consists of a redesigned Rental process and a reinvented Beginner Area. First-time skiers and riders will start out in the rental shop, where specially trained technicians will ensure their gear set-up is perfect on a new “Boot Bridge”. Then, it’s onto five steps of specifically shaped snow features that control speed and movement. On “The Flats”, guests meet their instructor, get familiar with their equipment, and learn the basic ranges of motions needed on snow. The “Mini-Pipe” is where they’ll have their first experience of sliding, learning to pump the terrain, steer, and slide. Next, “The Rollers” will introduce the thrill of gravity and build confidence while speed is controlled by the gently rolling terrain. From there, it’s onto the “Banked Turns” feature, which will subtly help to redirect the skis or board through the guests very first series of turns. On the “Perfect Slope”, newcomers will make their first unassisted turns, building the skills and confidence needed to head up the mountain to our Green terrain.

“It’s all about beginners having fun in a safe, controlled environment and providing instructors with the most innovative terrain”, says Chip Seamans, President & General Manager of Windham Mountain Resort. He’s hoping this program “will change the lives of first-timers, turning them into snow sports lovers forever.”

Broaden Your Family’s Winter Adventure Horizons Windham Mountain Resort Expands Snowtubing and Snowmobiling in Adventure Park

WINDHAM MOUNTAIN RESORT, N.Y. (December 6, 2017) Windham Mountain Resort’s Adventure Park is already well known amongst families of skiers and non-skiers, alike. Now, with a conveyor lift replacing the tow lifts in the snowtubing area, a new “serpentine” tubing track, new snowmobiles, and snowmaking in the park, the 2017 – 2018 season will be better than ever.

“Our new conveyor lift has 4 times the uphill capacity that one of the old tow lifts had”, says Ted Davis, Director of Mountain Operations at Windham Mountain Resort. He also notes that the conveyer won’t require the amount of snow that a tow lift did for operation, leaving more snow to be used in the tubing lanes. The Park will feature a new style of tubing this winter, with the debut of a “serpentine track” style lane, which features turns, rather than the straight down ride you get in a traditional tubing lane.

The snowmobiling area of The Park has also been improved, with new machines being added to the fleet. This addition will expand The Park’s current weight limit, allowing a greater range of children, up to 150 pounds in weight, to be accommodated. Buzzing around the oval track of The Adventure Park’s lower level is always a favorite activity for Windham Mountain Resort’s young guests.

The 7200-square foot outdoor ice skating center will return for the 17/18 season, including skate rentals and a warming center making this classic winter activity something the entire family will enjoy.

The Adventure Park at Windham Mountain Resort is located just a quarter of a mile from the main lodge, with separate parking, food service, and ticketing available at the Adventure Park Lodge. Operation hours and pricing for the 2017 – 2018 season are available at windhammountain.com.

From Windham to Peoyong Chang Winter Games Windham Mountain Resort Sponsors Paralympics Team Member Staci Mannella

WINDHAM MOUNTAIN RESORT, N.Y. (February 5, 2018) Windham Mountain Resort is honored to support U.S. Paralympics Alpine National Team member, Staci Mannella, as she makes her way to the 2018 Peoyong Chang Paralympic Games. Staci first discovered skiing with the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham Mountain when she was just four years old. Legally blind due to achromatopsia, a genetic eye condition she was born with, she started skiing because it was an activity that her family could all do together. She quickly progressed from skiing with a bamboo pole between two sighted skiers, to out skiing her instructors, to competing in her first national championship at just eleven years old.

A limitless dreamer, Staci’s career thus far has included four national championship titles, a world cup gold medal, and representing the United States in the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Games. Staci and her current guide, Sadie Debaun, have been skiing together since December of 2015. They’ve secured four world cup gold medals, three world cup silver medals, and a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships. The two have high hopes for Peoyong Chang and Windham Mountain Resort could not be more excited for them.

Windham’s support of Staci is a testament to the Resort’s long-standing relationship with the Adaptive Sports Foundation. The non-profit organization provides life changing experiences for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities and chronic illnesses through outdoor physical activity, education, support and community. The slope side Adaptive Sports Center at Windham Mountain provides athletes like Staci with a fully equipped, easily accessible, cozy place to enjoy a day on the mountain with their families.

Staci Mannella is a Randolph, New Jersey native, and at twenty years old, a full-time student at Dartmouth College where she competes on the Dartmouth equestrian team. She aspires to attend veterinarian school after Dartmouth. While her skiing career has brought Staci all over the world, she always makes her way back home to Windham. Windham Mountain Resort looks forward to having Staci on the slopes this season, and to sending her off to the 2018 Peoyong Chang Paralympic Games in March.
