The music of The Kinks is a form of rock based off of a wide range of musical influences including rhythm and blues, theatrical music hall, folk, and country. The original members included Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Peter Quaife, and Mick Avory. While they had a couple singles that didn't make it big, they came to prominence with "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night." Although they had their ups and downs, The Kinks continued to tour and create new music throughout the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties.

  • The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society 4Th October – 18Th November 2018 Proud: the Central,Village London Green Preservation Society
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 4th October – 18th November 2018 Proud: The Central,Village London Green Preservation Society Proud Galleries is delighted to announce ‘The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society’, an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary multi-format release of The Kinks’ sixth studio album, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. On display is a selection of rare collector’s items including specially commissioned artworks by members of the band and vintage memorabilia, together with a collection of photographs documenting this remarkable period in the band’s history. Each work is hand- signed by surviving band members Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory. ‘The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society’ explores the album’s defiantly British sensibilities and commemorates what is now considered to be the high point of The Kinks’ outstanding career. The Village Green was originally released by The Kinks in November 1968 and became the final album from the original quartet: Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Pete Quaife and Mick Avory. Despite a positive critical reception upon its release, the album did not perform well commercially, perhaps due to the band’s deliberate step away from the musical trends of the era. In retrospect, audiences have come to value the album’s timeless quality, with Pete Townshend of The Who describing it as, ‘Ray [Davies]’s masterpiece… what makes him the definitive pop poet laureate’. Defying the 60’s typical approach to rock ‘n’ roll, The Village Green offers an affectionate and charming ode to the countryside through vignettes of English life.

Contrary to the PR blurb “This DVD contains some of the Kinks finest moments and is full of rarely seen performances from the sixties right through to the nineties…,” this is not rare material. The bulk of the material, particularly the full length clips, are taken from two sources: German TV show Beat Beat Beat , from 1965, and the video version of the 1980 live release One For The Road , shot in a Providence, RI arena in 1979 (both of which are available in whole separately). Added to that is the inclusion of three late-period, MTV videos: “Predictable,” “Come Dancing” and “State of Confusion,” and some (what looks like even later period) cut-up interview segments with Ray , Dave and Mick Avory , not to mention a plethora of montages of stills and very brief snippets of some other video pieces. 1 of 3 6/17/2010 11:29 AM Looking For The Magic | The Story Of The Kinks http://wenker.se/archives/800 To create “The Story of the Kinks” they have a voiceover narration providing a basic timeline (which, to make matters worse repeatedly overlays some of the video segments), and then use out-of-time, mix-and-match renditions of some of their songs to illustrate this timeline.

"You Really Got Me": A Complete Charting Odyssey- How The Kinks Blew The Doors Off the British Invasion Against Fierce Competition And Scored Their First U.S. Hit Mark Teehan May 2016 Introduction As a powerful, iconic record, "You Really Got Me" both saved and launched the Kinks' illustrious career. As a musical statement, it was the embodiment of so many forces and emotions: rage, defiance, rebellion, perseverance, and survival. Most of all, it marked the culmination of a monumental struggle by the band to have the song recorded in a manner so that it sounded as they envisioned- original and reflective of their working-class roots, the way it did in their live concerts. Musically, "You Really Got Me" represented a dichotomy of sorts: its controlled, monolithic bass-heavy, strong percussive sound was built around a monster riff that stood in sharp contrast to the wild abandon and distorted, gritty tone of Dave Davies' unique, memorable guitar solo. This essay will initially set the stage by summarizing the creation of "You Really Got Me," its recording, its sonic characteristics, and progress on the UK charts. Afterwards, we will shift to the article's primary focus of analyzing the complex charting of the Kinks' landmark record in the U.S. Using the extensive array of surviving local radio station music surveys from pivotal markets across America, this writer will analyze the intricate connection between those local surveys and the national charts as they affected "You Really Got Me". Furthermore, in order to provide valuable insight into the American pop music industry of the mid-60's and a broader perspective into the commercial progress of the Kinks' record in the U.S., this writer will cover on a secondary basis the charting of another single from a rival British group.

Not far from the infamous Cranley Gardens address is the secondary Ray Davies: A Complicated Life where Ray Davies and his younger brother Dave went to school in the Fifties. The red- brick house is still there but Muswell Hill is no longer a shabby outreach of the Northern Line. Davies can still be seen mooching around, however, as he lives in nearby Highgate. According Ray Davies: A Complicated Life this diligent biography, Ray Davies was born in to a Smithfield slaughterman, Ray Davies: A Complicated Life Davies, and his wife, Annie. Stewart was kicked out when his voice was found to be unpleasantly raspy. Three years later, inDavies gave us Waterloo Sunset, one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written. For all their childhood singalongs, Ray and Dave were constantly at blows over song credits, royalties, drink and women. The rivalry was casebook Freud. Unlike Dave, Ray was a prickly man with a keen sense of social grievance and inferiority. Ray Davies: A Complicated Life a concert inAvory hit Dave so hard across the head with a cymbal that he was feared dead. Promoters wished the Kinks could be polite like the Rolling Stones.
