Diarmaid Byrnes, captain of 2015 All Ireland Under 21 champions Limerick, has been an ardent fan of The Green & White Magazine for as long as he can remember. He read every issue he could get his hands on from cover to cover when he was a pupil in Patrickswell N.S. When he returned to the school recently with the Cross of Cashel Cup - & four All-Ireland-winning clubmates - in tow, he was absolutely delighted to learn that it was now his turn to Diarmaid Byrnes be interviewed for his favourite GAA magazine!

Ciara Mulqueen, NS played on All Ireland final day Croke Park Trip of a Lifetime On August 30th, I represented my school, St Molua’s NS Ardagh, and my county in the Cumann na mBunscol INTO GAA RESPECT Go Games before the Dublin v Mayo All Ireland Senior Football semi-final in Croke Park. The day began with a meeting of players, referees, organisers and parents. I was introduced to my teammates on the Dublin team. I was delighted to get a Dublin kit! I was wondering how my Dad would take that being a Mayo man but he took it all in his stride! We then headed off to the Croke Park dressing room where we changed into our playing gear. We had photographs taken with the GAA and INTO presidents. We were then treated to a light meal of my favourite ... chicken goujons! I could not wait to run out onto the famous Croke Park pitch to play the game. It was a dream come true and a wonderful and memorable experience I will never forget. We returned to the stand to watch the senior game together. I made new friends on the Dublin team and we have kept in contact via Snapchat!! Thanks to my teammates in Ardagh NS for making it possible. Special thanks to Mr Kelleher, Principal Ardagh N.S, and organisers Mr Joe Lyons and Brother Dormer. Ciara Mulqueen Luimneach Abú, Crecora NS Daniel Geraghty. Ciara’s Story Before the summer holidays, I was chosen to play in the INTO Mini Sevens at the 2015 All Ireland hurling final. This was a big day for me, as I have always wanted to play in Croke Park. It all started last spring when our trainers Mrs Barrett and Mr O’Gorman took us every Thursday for after-school training. As the weeks went on, we won more and more camogie matches, with our school Crecora NS. Once we gor to the INTO mini sevens final we knew it was out chance to shine. We played 3 great teams on the day, NS, Milford NS and NS. They were very tough games but we knew that we could do it if we gave our all. We were so happy when we won! A couple of days later our trainer Mrs Barrett told me that I would be playing at the All Ireland Final in Croke Park in September. On the day itself I travelled up with my family. We met with boys and girls from all over Ireland in Clonliffe College. From there we went to Croke Park and got on our gear and had lunch. I was given a Kilkenny jersey. It was very exciting playing in front of such a big crowd. I made lots of new friends on the day. This is a fabulous experience for any primary pupil if they get the chance to participate. Daniel Geraghty After the final, I was lucky enough to meet , the Kilkenny hurler. Thanks to all the organisers for making it possible for me to play.

A week after Limerick’s fantastic victory in the 2015 All Ireland Under 21 final, five Patrickswell members of the panel brought the Cross G&W of Cashel Cup to their local school. It was a joyous occasion for all concerned. A green carpet was rolled out for the returning heroes. Literally! Pupils, teachers, neighbours, County Board officials and special guests, including Limerick captain, Diarmaid Byrnes’ parents were present in the School Hall for the never-to-be forgotten celebration. Words of appreciation and encouragement Diarmaid Byrnes had words of encouragement for pupils who need a bit of extra help with their lessons at school. “Don’t be a bit embarrassed if you’re not the best at something or if you need a bit of help with something,” he advised. “Everybody needs help with one thing or another. nearly 16 months on. Still too raw! Oh, the programme! It cost €5 on Lúnasa 10, 2014. Conforming to recent standards, it was a 64-page, slightly-larger-than-A5 shiny-paper production produced in conjunc- tion with DBA Publications Limited and the GAA Communications Department. Collectors dutifully collect all such programmes but there is something lifeless and sterile about template-driven programmes like this one and its ilk. On the other hand, maybe I’m just getting old and cranky! I collect them but I don’t bother reading them, wrapping them up in strong plastic (the programme was much drier than I was leaving the stand that afternoon) and dumping them into my Limerick Hurling Championship pile when I get home. To Win Just Once, is the title of a great song by The Sawdoctors: it sentiment was never more apposite than it was that afternoon!

1973 All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final

Here’s a programme that has a bit of character about it! It cost the grand total of 5 (FIVE!) new pence and came in (at least) three different colours: standard, blue, and yellow. I have all three, luckily enough, but it took over 10 years of solid collecting before I got my first. Some self-regarding collectors don’t have this programme at all yet! It is a rare programme and would fetch a pretty penny on the open market. It was the Sunday after the famous ‘breakthrough’ win against Tipperary. London, conquerors of Galway in Ballinasloe that same afternoon, were the surprise opposition. This was a good London team, with a good sprinkling of excellent Galway-born players in the line-up including ’s uncle, Frank. One of the most interesting things about the game is the fact that Ned Rea marked his brother Gerry, who was full back for London. There are 6 pages in the programme. It was a designed as a sort of fold-out menu, a reasonably popular format at the time. The game was played in Ennis.

theCaptain Fantastic! Parish! Michael Cuddihy writes about a famous victory for Pallaskenry N.S.

Hello, my name is Michael Cuddihy. I am 13 years old and I am in Sixth Class in Scoil Mhuire Pallaskenry N.S. (June 2015). I love sport. It has always been a big part of my life. I have been playing GAA with my club since I was five years old and with my school since I was in Third Class. I like all sports, especially hurling, football and soccer. This year, our school hurling team was drawn G&W against St. Patricks BNS, Our Lady Queen of Peace NS and Gaelscoil Sáirséal in the City ‘B’ Division. We topped our group with three wins out of three. Next up was the semi-final. We played Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh in a cracking match which we won thanks to a great team performance. When we found out who we were playing in the final, many of us couldn’t believe our ears! In We were up against our club mates from the other half of the parish, N.S.! The match was played in the Gaelic Grounds. It was an intense game from the start with both teams giving it their all. Pallaskenry played with the wind and took their points while Kildimo just wanted goals! The half time score was Pallaskenry 0-8 Kildimo 3-0. G&W Our management team of Mr. O’Sullivan and Damien O’Brien encouraged us to keep playing our best and to keep taking our scores. It was tough but both teams managed to keep up the high tempo in the second half. We knew we needed goals and scored three in quick succession; we scored a few good points too. Kildimo tried their best to keep us at bay and scored two goals and a point themselves. But, in the end, Pallaskenry held out and won their first hurling trophy since 2009. Final score: Pallaskenry N.S. 4-13 Kildimo N.S. 5-1. I was delighted to accept the trophy on behalf of the team.
