Carmen Baron fell in love with folklorico while growing up in Altar, Sonora where, as a young girl sitting on her mother’s lap, she learned to sew. Since moving to Tucson in 1973, Carmen has lovingly designed and sewn colorful, intricate folklorico costumes and taught the art of the dance, passing on her knowledge and the tradition of folklorico to the next generation.

The trade between Arizona and Sonora is valued at over $10 billion. It’s a relationship that many say must survive.

Arizona Public Media traveled to Hermosillo, Sonora’s capital and largest city, for an in-depth report on its cross-border economic efforts and an analysis of the development of the region as a business power. While in the region, AZPM took in the sights, sounds, and economic data of the expatriate coastal village and port of nearby San Carlos, on the Sonoran side of the Arizona-Mexico economic “mega-region.”

Arizona’s ties to Sonora, Mexico are strongly backed by the economic growth experienced by both. Southern Arizona is a hotbed for astronomy, which is good for the economy, for education, and for scientists, among others. Some of the best-known photographers in this fi eld are drawn to Southern Arizona because of the local effort to keep skies darker than many other metropolitan areas. Retired astrophysicist Mike Weasner is the chair of the Oracle Dark Skies Committee. He is also involved in educational programs, and remains an active member of the astronomy community. Kautz 1931 2018 AZPM staff were honored with 12 individual Emmys in fi ve categories at the annual Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Jim was a long-time friend of AZPM, a generous philanthropist, (NATAS) Emmy Awards Ceremony on September 22, 2018. Murrow Awards, which Bill made the seminal gift to establish an endowment “honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism” and “demonstrate supporting AZPM student employees. the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.” This is the highest number of Murrow Awards AZPM has been awarded in a single year and the fi rst time it was honored in the Video category.
