The very best players, from the 45 schools, coming together to make a team Welcome

Erdington and Saltley has a long and rich history at both secondary school level and primary school level. The Erdington & Saltley Schools’ Football Association was formed in 1964, merging the old separate as- sociations of Saltley and Erdington, whose origins go back many years.

Boys and Girls from 45 schools qualify to represent the primary school district team and the standard is exceptionally high. Therefore, anyone who pulls on the Erdington and Saltley jersey must be an incredibly tal- ented individual!

An illustrious list of players have represented the district over the years, with many going on to ply their trade in the professional arena, including the following:

 Gabriel Agbonlahor – Aston Villa and England  Darren Byfield – Aston Villa and Jamaica  Julian Dicks – Birmingham City, West Ham and England U21  Ian Taylor – Aston Villa  Gary Shaw – Aston Villa, England U21, PFA Player of the Year 1981, European Cup Winner 1982  Darius Vassell – Aston Villa, Manchester City and England  Barry Bannan – Aston Villa and Scotland

For these footballers, their path to becoming a professional started whilst playing for ‘the district’.

For many others who don’t make it as a professional, their experience of district football is just as rewarding, if not more. District football is an honour for all involved and something that creates memories for life.

Many people can look back on life and say they played football.

Only a select few can look back on life and say they played district foot- ball. Erdington and Saltley

45 Schools - 3 Squads - 1 District Our Vision To develop well disciplined student-athletes who strive for educational and footballing excellence. Our Mission

We aim to create an atmosphere that allows the players to grow as young people, as well as improving as footballers. We recognise that the community of Erdington and Saltley faces many socio- economic challenges. Unemployment, economic deprivation and crime are higher than other wards in Birmingham. These are just a few of the issues that can make growing up in Erdington and Saltley challenging. We also recognise that our children are subjected to ever increasing commercial pressures and spend more time than ever indoors on screen-based technology, rather than outdoors involved in physical activity. Furthermore whilst there seems to be pressure to achieve prescriptive guidelines in every field, the process of achieving, the definition of achievement and the responsibility beyond oneself have been forgotten. As teachers who voluntarily run the district football teams, we wish to spread the message through sport, that learning is about the process of personal experience; that the opportunity to experience is the key to developing understanding. We wish to provide the opportunities to raise expectation and aspira- tions, nurture personality and encourage an awareness of common responsibility so that knowledge and skills can be used in all areas of life. In short, our mission is to:

 Develop student/athletes who are committed to personal excellence and team success.

 Provide an inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, practice and hard work generate legiti- mate opportunities for success.

 Emphasise the importance and development of funda- mentals and techniques necessary for positive experiences in football and in life.

 Create a consistently exciting and entertaining program that generates huge levels of support, pride and tradition for all our community to share

Our Core Values

Hard work We give everything that we have, in everything that we do. When playing football, we ‘leave everything on the pitch’. After a game has fin- ished, we can honestly say that we tried our very best. We’re exhausted through the effort that we put in during the game. No opponent runs further than we do, tackles harder or jumps higher. If we win, it’s due to the effort that we put in during the game. If we lose, it’s because we came up against an opponent of superior ability, rather than a team who worked harder. Losing to a more skilled opponent is fine. It’s a fact of life. However losing to a team because they tried harder than we did is not something that we will accept. In school we will transfer this value to our work. We will strive for academic excellence by ensuring that we try our best in every lesson, regardless of whether it’s our favourite subject or not. We understand that education has the power to transform our life and the lives of our family and community. We know that we must make the most of the opportunities provided to us by our Our Core Values

Integrity

We always do what is right. We are always honest and never lie. We show loyalty and respect to our parents, coaches, teammates, opponents and officials. This is something that we replicate in our school-life. When we arrive on match-day, we approach all of our coaches and greet them by saying “Hello” and shaking them by the hand. We do the same with all of our teammates. During a game we accept all decisions made by the officials, even if we disagree with them. We do not question officials, answer them back or question their integrity. The officials’ decisions are final. After a game we thank the referee for his/her effort and shake their hand. We then offer three cheers for our opponents, before shaking each player by the hand, even those with whom we might have had a disagreement with during the course of the match. We always offer to set-up equipment for a match, as well as offering to help tidying up after a game. We do not look to avoid duties and jobs, no matter how boring they might seem. We know the value of manners and always use them. We always show respect to our coaches, even if we disagree with a decision that they’ve made. We know that being a substitute before and during a game is simp- ly part of the sport and accept it without sulk- ing.

Fun

We realise that playing for the district is a huge honour and one that is only bestowed upon a lucky few each season. Therefore we will approach each session and game with a smile on our face. We know that we play our best football when we’re relaxed and enjoying ourselves. Our Core Values

Saturday: The inaugural Bath International Cup opened on Saturday with 12 teams from across Europe competing for the title

Chelsea, Everton and Swansea from the were joined by BWB, Erdington and Saltley and North Somerset from the ESFA, whilst B93, Rayo Val- lecano and BK Skjold and BK Masthugget flew on the day before from Scandinavia and Spain.

The teams were split into two groups with 5 games each to be played. The teams finishing first would progress to Sunday’s Champions League, and the other 3 would go through to the Europa League.

The main thing to characterise Saturday’s efforts was the amazing team spirit and unrivalled work rate. We couldn’t have asked the lads to battle any more. At times it wasn’t pretty , but the calibre of the opposition meant we were up against it from the first whistle. Nevertheless the lads showed commitment, bravery and determi- nation during each game and walked away with their heads held high and reputa- tion as a team enhanced.

Sunday: Saturday’s results meant we found ourselves in the Europa League and up against five teams from four different countries.

The morning started slowly for us, with the lads looking tired from the previous day’s efforts. Despite the lack of zest, we still kept clean sheets in both games, alt- hough by this point our goal drought stretched back seven games and 140 minutes.

In the third game of the morning the boys found their shooting boots, putting five past their Swedish opponents, although as a team we were still not reaching the heights that we’d achieved the previous day. Honest words were exchanged be- tween the lads and a promise was made to “smash it” during the final two games of the day.

Like any athlete at the top of his or her game, the boys peaked at the right moment! Game four saw us square up to FC Vilnius of Lithuania and win 4-0, with the urgen- cy and fluidity once again returning to our game.

That meant we went into the final game of the day knowing it was effectively a final. The winner of the game would lift the cup, although a draw would also have been enough for Bath. From the first whistle the boys looked completely focused and united in their determination to win the game. Two goals from two Birches Green boys (Rio and Samim) was enough to claim the victory needed to lift our first piece of silverware as a team.

More important than the win was everything else that we got from the weekend. The lads bonded as a group, got to experience other cultures and languages, visit- ed a university and made new friends, particularly with the Chelsea boys who they struck up a bond with during meal times.

Tim, Dean and everyone connected with Bath and the Premier League deserve a huge amount of credit for their efforts. What a weekend! Thank you so much! BPSFA SIX-A-SIDE CUP2015 Winners Saturday 18th September 2015 @Heartlands Academy Gold Team: Rob, Kye, Sam, Rio, Troy, Kane and Ilani Goals: Kye, Rio x 2, Troy x 5 and Kane x 7 Black and White Team: Daniel, Diago, Tamiel, Harvey, Oakley, Tion, Blessing, Cam- eron, Pharelle and Jakeel Goals: Pharelle x 3, Cameron, Oakley x 2 Two tournaments into the season and two wins for this group of incredibly talented young men. Following the achievement of winning the Bath International Cup over the August Bank holiday weekend, the lads put in another stunning performance to be crowned 6-a-side champions of Birmingham for the second time in three years. During the course of the morning both teams showed immense promise, as well as superb footballing talent. The black and white team missed out on a place in the semi final thanks to the last second equaliser that they conceded against Aston. However they regrouped to claim a win against East Birmingham in the final of the secondary competition. One of the most pleasing things about the morning was the fact that u10s Cameron and Blessing competed so well against their older peers, as well as the new boys who all settled in well after making their debuts. Very exciting indeed. The gold team cruised through their group after scoring eight goals in their three games and conceding only one. Then in the semi final they beat Aston before squaring up against a very talented team. The boys hit top form in the final, putting three past Sutton and keeping their fourth clean sheet in five games. The football that the boys played was breathtaking and many of the parents in the crowd complimented the lads on their football style. An truly amazing morn- ing. The start of the season couldn’t have gone any better for the boys. We’ve been blessed over the past few years with the talent at our disposal and it seems we’ve got another great group, but we knew that already! Up The Ton! The Ton HIT TOP FORM NINE Saturday 26th September 2015 @ The Priory School, Edgbaston Goals! Harborne 0 – 9 Erdington and Saltley Team: Rob, Sam, Diago, Taylor, Kye, Rio, Kane, Oakley, Cameron E and Jakeel Goals: Kane x 4, Cameron E x 2, Rio x 2 and OG Man of the Match: Kane Following the amazing victories in the Bath International Cup and the BPSFA 6-a-side Champion- ship we were left wondering if our start to the season could get any better. An hour after kicking off yesterday morning we had our answer…YES. A resounding YES! The game couldn’t have started any better for The Ton, as an unfortunate Harborne defender put the ball into his own next shortly after two minutes. Following that piece of fortune, the boys con- tinued to push their opponents and were rewarded with two further goals, one from captain Kane and another for Cameron E who was making his debut for the u11s after playing for the u10s this season. In fact it’s worth noting that this is Cameron’s first season of playing football. Prior to this season he hadn’t played for a team, although now he is playing for a incredibly talented Phoenix u10s team and the district u11s team! If the first third was all Erdington and Saltley, the second third was a much more even affair. Our fluid attacking football from the first third had been replaced by scrappier play and the second 20 minutes ended 0-0. At times we were over playing and missing opportunities to play in team ma- tes who were in better positions. Determined to right this wrong, the team was switched around a little with Rio dropping in to the centre of defence, Sam moving into midfield and Cameron going back up front. These changes re-energised the boys and they once again dominated the game, so much so that they scored six more goals to win 9-0. Kane grabbed himself tree more goals to make it four for the game, whilst Cameron netted a second and Rio, who now found himself on the right wing, scored a truly stun- ning brace! The first came immediately after moving to the right wing, when the Birches Green winger burst down the right, skipped past three players, cut into the box and rifled the ball into the roof of the net! His second was equally as stunning, as he and Kane linked up to take a short free kick before Rio blasted it in from outside of the box. What a morning! Every time we asked the boys for something extra they reacted positively. The feel about the team is brilliant and the sense of team spirit is unlike anything I’ve ever known. This could be a great season BUT only if we continue to work our socks off and make the most of every opportunity. This is something that I’m convinced we are capable of doing! It would be wrong of me to sign off without mentioning the defence and Rob. A clean sheet is al- ways a fantastic achievement and something to shout about, so that’s exactly what I’m doing! A special mention to Taylor, who like Cameron E, is an u10s and made his debut for the u11s yes- terday. The future is bright! Thank you Harborne for your warm welcome and thank you to the boys for your great attitude. Good luck ahead of the season. Up The Ton! Statistics LEAGUE TABLE Fixtures Results
