A joint venture of the Federal German States of Lower Saxony and Bremen The Challenge
Booming expansion in global container handling Growth in world trade continually increases volume and ever increasing size of container faster than international production. Global ships demand an exceptional increase in the container traffic develops with exceptional and capacity and performance of the world’s seaports. sustainable growth rates. The result: container logistics facilities must increase in quantity and efficiency to meet future demand.
Container handling volume is predicted to double in the German seaports over the next 10 years. Capacities of container ships increase, hence the demand of efficiency and performance of seaports grows. They have to be accessible for mega carriers with draughts over 16 meters and a capacity of over 12,000 TEU regardless of tidal constraints.
Short access from the open sea, an ideal location with efficient hinterland road and rail connection are the advantages of the JadeWeserPort.

9 The Region
Wilhelmshaven and the North West Region have long established historical links with the maritime industry. The JadeWeserPort will further develop the location into a major inter- national logistics hub.
The relatively young city of Wilhelmshaven was first established as a Prussian naval port in the late 19th Century. Construction of the original naval port commenced in 1853 on agreement between the Duchy of Oldenburg and the King- dom of Prussia. In June 1869 the port was handed to the navy adopting the name of the German Kaiser, Wilhelm I.
1957 saw further major maritime developments with the establishment of Germany’s largest oil terminal. Still today Wilhelmshaven remains as the only deep sea German oil terminal and the principle source of Germany’s oil imports. Today’s regional economic focus remains port industry, business and trade as well as the largest German IMPRINT naval base. JadeWeserPort will secure the entire North West Region of Germany by creating jobs PUBLISHED BY and by boosting the development of the city bremenports GmbH & Co.
