  • Keynote Address by the Hon John Fahey Ac President World Anti-Doping Agency to the Anzsla Conference, Melbourne Thursday, 16
KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY THE HON JOHN FAHEY AC PRESIDENT WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY TO THE ANZSLA CONFERENCE, MELBOURNE THURSDAY, 16 OCTOBER, 2008 Thank you for the opportunity to share some time and some thoughts with you this morning on a subject which has occupied a large slice of my life over the past 12 months. It is not hard to recall the reason why I was attracted to a volunteer position with an International organisation that is based in Montreal, which is almost as far as you can get from my home town of Bowral in NSW. I have always been attracted to the concept of fair play. It is the very essence of sport, if not the most fundamental principle governing our lives. Doping is a triple threat: to athlete safety, to sport integrity, and to greater public health. I am old enough to recall some of the sporting events at international level during the seventies and eighties where the build of athletes, both male and female, did not resemble the stereotype for the event and where all of us had suspicions something was happening that had nothing to do with normal training and strength-building exercises. Many of us in those days believed something was radically wrong. I still vividly recall the comparison in physique between Australia’s Raelene Boyle and the powerful, muscular East German Renate Stecher as they lined up for the start of the 200 metre Final in Munich in 1972. But despite the suspicions and concerns of millions of sports followers around the world, nothing was done by officialdom to address what appeared to be an obvious problem.

  • China-Southeast Asia Relations: Trends, Issues, and Implications for the United States
Order Code RL32688 CRS Report for Congress Received through the CRS Web China-Southeast Asia Relations: Trends, Issues, and Implications for the United States Updated April 4, 2006 Bruce Vaughn (Coordinator) Analyst in Southeast and South Asian Affairs Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Wayne M. Morrison Specialist in International Trade and Finance Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Congressional Research Service ˜ The Library of Congress China-Southeast Asia Relations: Trends, Issues, and Implications for the United States Summary Southeast Asia has been considered by some to be a region of relatively low priority in U.S. foreign and security policy. The war against terror has changed that and brought renewed U.S. attention to Southeast Asia, especially to countries afflicted by Islamic radicalism. To some, this renewed focus, driven by the war against terror, has come at the expense of attention to other key regional issues such as China’s rapidly expanding engagement with the region. Some fear that rising Chinese influence in Southeast Asia has come at the expense of U.S. ties with the region, while others view Beijing’s increasing regional influence as largely a natural consequence of China’s economic dynamism. China’s developing relationship with Southeast Asia is undergoing a significant shift. This will likely have implications for United States’ interests in the region. While the United States has been focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, China has been evolving its external engagement with its neighbors, particularly in Southeast Asia. In the 1990s, China was perceived as a threat to its Southeast Asian neighbors in part due to its conflicting territorial claims over the South China Sea and past support of communist insurgency.

  • Address by Qantas Chairman Margaret Jackson 20 Foenander
OBLIGATION RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT Address by Qantas Chairman Margaret Jackson 20th Foenander Lecture, University of Melbourne 23 August 2005 Introduction Thank you for that kind introduction. It’s an honour be here today, to deliver this lecture in memory of a great pioneer of the study of Australian industrial relations. And it’s a privilege to join the list of eminent Australians who have delivered this lecture in the past. I make no claim on this occasion to be an industrial relations specialist. And even though I studied aspects of industrial relations both in my undergraduate degree and during my MBA, I certainly do not propose myself as someone who could cite the many thousands of relevant pages of closely written legislation and regulation. I’ll leave that skill set to the experts, many of whom are here today. But from a Board level I can talk about guiding principles and pragmatic approaches. And our approach at Qantas is all about obligation, responsibility and respect. That does not just mean in relation to our workforce, but in all our operations and our endeavours with customers, shareholders and other community stakeholders. So let me start with some remarks about each of these concepts. Obligation: Qantas is an iconic Australian brand with an extensive history that interweaves with Australian history.
