Project Grants Awarded from 1997 - 2001

Since the appointment of the Trustees, and from 1997 in December every year, advertisements have been placed in both English and Chinese newspapers inviting applications from registered institutions and associations for the support of projects which meet the objects of the Foundation. Support normally takes the form of financial grants and applications are considered by the Trustees on a case-by-case basis.

The total amount of project grants awarded to registered institutions and associations, tertiary institutions and under the purview of the Authority from 1997-2001 were:

Apart from significant grants made to the Samaritan Fund in all the years under this report, major grants were made in 1997 for establishing the S.K. Yee Dental Outreach Unit, S.K. Yee Mental Health Resource and Rehabilitation Unit and a psychogeriatric , and Haven of Hope S.K. Yee and Verbena Heights Clinics; development of an orthopaedic rehabilitation service programme in China; training unit for demonstration and training carers of autistic children; training medical personnel in treating neurological impaired patients; recurrent expenditure and equipment for a mobile eye service programme; search for unrelated donors for bone marrow transplantation; pilot project on telemedicine for elderly residents in nursing homes; and establishment of a health information and resources centre cum special counselling room in a hospital.

Page 2 of 3 Major grants were made in 1998 towards salaries for the CancerCare and Support Unit, setting up a geriatric urology clinic, rehabilitation facilities for disabled elderly orthopaedic patients, equipment for infirmary service, establishing a new physiotherapy unit, equipping an activities of daily living training room, and equipment for enhancing quality of patient-centred care in different hospitals; establishing an osteoporosis centre; installation of a lift for the disabled in a school; and establishing a train-the-trainers programme for paediatric , self-help and mutual help in speech rehabilitation and operations and patient care techniques for doctors in China.

Major grants were made in 1999 for replacement of two mobile dental vans; developing a community dementia day-care service for the elderly; capital expenditure for Haven of Hope S.K. Yee Clinic; provision of volunteer medical and dental service in China; setting up a bereavement and farewell room, refurbishment of a rehabilitation garden, and purchase of equipment for enhancement of ambulatory services in different hospitals; equipment and renovation works for renal dialysis; and renovation and upgrading of equipment for a clinic.

Major grants were made in 2000 for an orthopaedic rehabilitation service programme and the “train-the-trainers” programme for paediatric surgery in China; establishing a resource centre in diabetes; establishing the S.K. Yee Fellowship in Hepatobiliary Surgery in a university; installation of ceiling hoist and shower system, equipment for a paediatric ophthalmic assessment clinic for children with multiple handicap, construction of a satellite physiotherapy gymnasium, purchase of vehicle for a mobile rehabilitation centre for high risk elderly, funding for the Defeat Depression Programme including a documentary drama radio programme, equipment for work competence and stress management programme for patients with depression, equipment for continence promotion of old and disabled patients, establishing a one-stop shop health service for discharged patients and establishing the S.K. Yee Medical Foundation Patient Endowment Fund in different hospitals; and sponsorship of eye care service.

Major grants were made in 2001 for conducting a surveillance programme of tuberculosis in old age homes; setting up telemedicine for community geriatric assessment service in , establishing a community health resources and training centre for dementia and chronic illness patients, establishing a child and family bereavement resource centre, renovation costs for a child and family bereavement resource centre, improvement of environment of infirmary service, establishing a new glaucoma diagnostic unit, equipment for establishing a health resource centre, establishing a family-centred care lounge for post-delivery mothers and babies, equipping a wheelchair bank for children with severe physical disabilities, and provision of rehabilitation beds for severe mental handicap patients in different hospitals; providing rehabilitation programme for children in China, and conducting a pilot project on long term care for the elderly in Hong Kong.
