The Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach.

Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistant coach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure.

A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota. McLellan is the 14th Head Coach in Oilers franchise history. Through Nov. 21, he has now been a head coach for 727 NHL games, ranking 47th all-time, 12th among active NHL coaches. Through the 2016-17 season, McLellan, 50, had posted a record of 79-69-17 over his first two seasons with the Oilers, leading Edmonton to 43 wins and a 103-point season in 2016-17, marking their first 100-plus point season since 1986-87. He also led the Oilers to their first playoff berth since 2005-06, advancing to the Western Conference semi-finals.
