FALL 2016 from the head of school

Earlier this fall I was talking to a longtime supporter of Epstein. As we discussed the school, its past, present and future, he remarked that the one constant in life is change. As a seasoned community leader I particularly appreciated his perspective and wisdom. With just one, deep comment he was able to offer me some broader perspective both on Epstein and on life.

2 EPSTEINATLANTA.ORG CENTERED AROUND PILLAR#1 OUR STUDENTS

At The Epstein School, everything we do and every decision we make is 100% centered around our students.

SMALL GROUP LEARNING: From our Early Childhood Program to Elementary School, we believe in creating small classes and groups for our students. These groups with a low student-teacher ratio allow us to meet each student where he/she is— academically, emotionally, and socially.

VARIED TEACHING TECHNIQUES AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: We allow for each child’s individuality to shine. Our teachers and educational leaders understand that there is not a “one size fits all” teaching technique or learning environment.

We differentiate in order to teach to various learning styles beginning in our Early Childhood Program. 3 POWERED BY OUR #PILLAR2 COMMUNITY

Our warm and caring community is a cornerstone of The Epstein School. Students, teachers, parents, grandparents, alumni, and community members all contribute to make our school the amazing place it is.

GLOBAL LEARNING: Our community expands well beyond the walls of Epstein. Our PreK and 1st grade students interact with their peers in and bridge this distance. Students at the Daliyot school in our partnership city of Yokneam-Megiddo, celebrate holidays alongside Epstein students thanks to technology. The students Skype and traded Rosh Hashanah cards.

In 2nd grade, students focus on learning about countries around the world. As part of that experience, speakers from South Africa, , and Chile come to tell the children about life in other places. Children also learn about the diversity of Jewish customs. WE THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS TO INTERFACE Visiting Israel with their class and meeting WITH THEIR CHILD’S LEARNING. INVOLVEMENT LEADS TO UNDERSTANDING AND peers in Israel is a highlight for our 8th TRUST. OUR “WINDOWS” PROGRAMS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GIVE PARENTS graders who make the trip each spring. HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE WITH OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR STUDENT. This trip is a culminating and unforgettable experience for our students. PARTNERSHIP We are lucky to have parents and grandparents who are active members of our community. Together, we are shaping the lives of our students and our families. At Epstein, this is integral to our philosophy.

· Our students are educated by · We build on the experience of Jewish the entire Epstein community, life provided to our students at home. which is comprised of peers, family members, and teachers. · We teach empathy and respect. We live those values every day. · We celebrate together and support one another in times of need. · We work with the whole family to develop rich relationships.

4 EPSTEINATLANTA.ORG FOCUSED ON OUR #PILLAR3 FUTURE

We are educating our students for living and learning in the 21st Century. Our students are flourishing with opportunities to take risks within a constantly changing learning environment that fosters innovation.

RECENT HONOR: Earlier this year, The Epstein School was chosen as a Microsoft Showcase School. “Microsoft Showcase Schools are the change makers in education. These schools thoughtfully consider the role of technology as they explore new ways to redesign learning spaces, restructure curriculum, reinvent pedagogy and reimagine what 21st Century leading and learning looks like across diverse contexts,” explains Anthony Salicito VP, Worldwide Education for Microsoft. This is exactly what The Epstein School does on a daily basis.

We are one of almost 850 schools around the world to receive this honor. One of the many benefits is that we will have access to exclusive resources and connect to other Microsoft Showcase Schools.

Our students continue to impress in the OUR STUDENTS HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO THINK ABOUT HOW TO MAKE OUR ways that they think. We know that this WORLD A BETTER PLACE. SAFE CUTTING BOARD—THE SUPERBOARD. “I THINK THIS PROJECT TAUGHT ME THAT ANYONE CAN CREATE SOMETHING.”

L’DOR V’DOR | FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION This phrase repeats itself often in Jewish life. At The Epstein School, it is more than a saying. We are putting this into action. Our students are not only learning about the Jewish religion and traditions, but they are also—and more importantly—learning what it means to them to be Jewish. They learn to ask questions that lead to a deeper understanding. They feel the joy and ruach (spirit) of celebrations. They love Israel and our family who lives there. They graduate from Epstein with a rich foundation of their Jewish identity to take with them on their next steps in our world.

5 DRIVEN BY OUR #PILLAR4 VALUES

Our Jewish values are core to who we are as a learning community and are instilled throughout our school.

8 EPSTEINATLANTA.ORG focused on our future IMAGINE EPSTEIN Endowment refers to contributions that are invested in perpetuity and generate a steady stream of support, unlike expendable contributions that are typically used to fund immediate needs.

Endowments are fundamental to the financial stability of academic institutions like The Epstein School. Endowment funds provide a steady predictable source of income over time, on which the school can make commitments and build programs.

A strong endowment is the “behind-the-scenes” support for the most successful schools, universities, and cultural institutions across the country. 15 strategic plan WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE. The goals of this Strategic Plan are designed to provide a road map to move The Epstein School forward over the next five years while giving the school the flexibility to pivot based on how the coming years unfold. The strategic thinking within this plan was based on the idea that we strive to build a thriving Jewish Day School for the 21st Century that is student-centered, bilingual, and academically excellent.
