Stadtsportbund MAGAZINe — Issue 3 / 2015 Sport CLUB The sport club, a German phenomenon

There have been sports in Halle for over 100 years. Sports are fostered by clubs, some of which also have a 100-year old tradition.

Clubs are legally independent. Their members decide on the principles of financing. They pay a small fee eit- her monthly, bi-annually or annually (the state pays the fee for children of poor families). The members choose the board and can get involved as helpers, trainers or referees.

In sport clubs, the people themselves decide which sport is played. They arrange other club events them- selves, like parties and training trips. Their work is usually volunteer, working for little or no money. Trainers and managers in large clubs are full-time employees.

There are 197 sports clubs in Halle. They are all mem- bers of SSB (Stadtsportbund Halle e.V.), the local as- sociation. At the state level they are members of the LSB, the state association and at the national level the German Olympic Association (DOSB).
