Letter from the President 2021– No. 6

A very warm welcome to readers of the July BUZZ and especially to new members who have joined U3A Bendigo in the last month or so. It is a delight to welcome new members as they join us throughout the year. Please take the opportunity to read through the BUZZ. I encourage all members to visit u3abendigo.com for the latest updates on activities and information on the ever-changing COVID restrictions. The website is the best place to go for the most recent news affecting U3A members.

The Strategic Planning sub-committee has commenced reviewing and revising forward planning. This is a major task in providing direction for the Committee of Management as it focuses on how U3A Bendigo can best place itself into the future.

U3A Network Victoria hosted a Combined Regions’ Meeting via Zoom on 12 May. Amongst other matters, it was confirmed a U3A State Conference will be held in the second half of 2022. I am delighted to inform members that U3A Bendigo has been selected to host the conference from 2 to 4 October 2022. A sub-committee has been formed to undertake planning in conjunction with representatives from Network.

Network held its annual President’s Briefing on 19 May, also via Zoom, where several U3As gave presentations about their experience during and coming out of COVID restrictions. Some U3As have grown significantly while most have struggled to maintain memberships at pre-COVID levels. There has been a strong emphasis in delivering online classes and activities in metropolitan and some regional U3As. Members are invited to visit www.u3avictoria.com.au to see how to join online activities offered by U3As across the state. It was pleasing to hear how positive U3As are about returning to activities, particularly in person, and how relieved COVID hadn’t been more damaging to the wider membership.

I was delighted to accept an invitation to be guest speaker at the White Hills Probus Club on 24 May and give a presentation on U3A to about 60 club members. The presentation included an overview of the term “third age” and some history of the U3A movement including U3A Bendigo. The presentation was similar to one given to the Bendigo Sandhurst Rotary Club back in February. I have also been invited to give a similar presentation to the Y Service Club of Kangaroo Flat and the Kangaroo Flat Probus Club.

An intimate group of about 20 attended the May Social Gathering where we heard via Zoom from Lindy Croucher and Nick Headlam of GROW, a community-based organisation helping people recover from mental ill -health through a program of mutual support and personal development. My thanks to Lindy and Nic for sharing their personal journeys and to Marion Richardson and the catering crew for serving afternoon tea provided by the Committee. A big thankyou also to Leo Overberg and the Recorder Group for providing some inspirational recorder music.

Due to a growing number of corona virus cases, on 27 May the Victorian Government announced a state-wide seven day “circuit breaker” snap lockdown, which meant all U3A activities were suspended for the duration. While some restrictions were eased in regional Victoria to allow outdoor activities from 4 June, they were not eased enough to allow U3A members to meet indoors at St Mary’s until 15 June. My thanks to Convenors for keeping their groups advised of when they can resume.

I am saddened to advise of the passing of two well-known members who have been actively involved in U3A Bendigo for some years. Peter Browne, who was a keen walker and inspired many to keep on walking, especially throughout the pandemic, died on 31 May. Lynda Burke, a keen Discussion Group participant, table tennis player and a past Committee Member, died on 7 June. U3A Bendigo extends its sincere sympathy to both Peter’s and Lynda’s families.

Lynda was a prominent and active member of the U3A groups for many years, initially joining us during her pro- VALE longed stays in Bendigo (doing house swaps with her Lan- caster apartment) and then full time once she moved here permanently. She served some time on the Committee of LYNDA BURKE Management as well. Lynda believed in contributing as she found this a sure way to make new friends and share experi- ences. Lynda considered Bendigo among her three favourite destinations in the world, along with Italy and Egypt! From the blue skies to the magpies in the morning – it all fascinat- ed her.

She joined the Table Tennis group and, in later years, though not quite as mobile, she still thumped that ball hard and with a mean angle. She was a formidable opponent!

She loved her table tennis but the mid morning cuppa and chat were equally important to Lynda. Some- times she didn’t make it back to the courts after our break as conversations about ‘home in England’, edu- cation and current affairs topics engaged her attention. Lynda was an equally-involved member of the Monday discussion group; bringing her wide interests, past teaching experience and genealogical re- search skills to the subject at hand. She loved sharing her home cricket stories as she was heavily re- searching a prominent cricketer of her hometown. While she moved in 2020 to Geelong to be closer to family, even lockdown had the upside of being online so she could still engage with the Bendigo discus- sion group as she settled into her new unit.

We all remember Lynda with a smile and warm memories.

Technology Equipment Training: In connection with Room 1 technology, the Technology Support Team would like to hold a workshop for all interested Convenors/CoM members, so they know how the systems in Rooms 1 and 2 work. It's envisaged the workshop be held sometime in late July or August to provide time for advertising. Please contact David at [email protected] for more information.

U-MAS: The U3A Bendigo Membership Administration System (U-MAS) is maintained and checked as items arise. There are currently some groups, that are modifying their days or times. When you, as a Convenor want to make any changes, we ask that you please check with David to see if the Schedule is open for change, Cheryl Scully (Prospectus) and LynG (U-MAS), as well as the BUZZ Editors. It’s important that we keep our publications in synch.

There is a form on the website (Modified Activities Request – under Convenor Forms) that we ask you to fill in. It can then be emailed to all so the changes can be made correctly

The small team that were originally trained to input or modify data on U-MAS, and work on it regularly, have a security level that enables them to do this work. We are extremely mindful of our Data Base Security Policy and Privacy Policy. They have also each signed the Volunteer Non-Disclosure Form.

Note: No-one undertakes any work on U-MAS without first training with either CherylS or LynG and signing the Volunteer Non-Disclosure Form. Our data integrity and privacy depend on this. If the office is to open up on a different day, then those volunteers need to undertake training as above

Website Development:

The website is being updated as Covid Restrictions are announced. The Link is on the main page. A few Convenors have phoned or emailed to ask when they can resume Activities. Please take a regular look at the website for our Responses.

“Tuesday Talks” are starting again. Please check the website for more information. Use Categories to search and choose TueTalks to provide you with a list of Tuesday Talks.

Reminder: If you are having website problems, please contact Lyn at [email protected].

Document Control:

4 documents were approved by CoM this month. We need all members and Convenors to become familiar with our docs. Website Changes V1.0 Anti-Discrimination Policy V3.0 Code of Conduct V3.0 Terms & Conditions V2.0

Bulk Email Notifications

The bulk BUZZ email notifications (456) were sent out for the month to all members who have a working email. They’re sent out in batches as we can’t send them in one go, however we’re hoping to change that.

72 labels printed, BUZZ folded and posted for members who requested the BUZZ be delivered by post. A further 294 emails were sent to non-renewing members (those who hadn’t re-joined since 2020). Two past members contacted us to say they had moved and one member had died. No other replies or bounce backs received. It would seem that the emails have been ineffective in encouraging members to re-join.

Prospectus:

The U3A Bendigo Prospectus new version is being prepared. I have now trained CherylS to take over. As usual Activities are still changing. When items like days or times are changed Cheryl, David, the Buzz Editors and I need to be advised, or we will keep experiencing discrepancies between systems and documents. This then takes time to sort out.

Connecting Up

Connecting Up provides discounted software to organisations like us: Software and services at a fraction of retail cost Free or heavily discounted online learning Heavily discounted computers and IT hardware Australia’s most affordable NFP technology conference I receive email updates and will let CoM know if there is anything in this for us.

Thanks to Ray Tampion (Document Controller, Bulk Emails), Lex (Attendance Records), Lyn Goodall (U- MAS Management, Website Administrator, Document Control, Bulk Emails). Lyn Goodall, 0418 587 102 [email protected]

New Activities on Offer

Expressions of interest are sought from members who would like to participate in proposed new courses and activities at St Mary’s, Kangaroo Flat.

SOUL COLLAGE Become your own Oracle Soul Collage is a creative, inspiring and transformative collage process that’s simple and deeply satisfying to do. You handcraft your own soul cards with intuitively chosen collage images. Each self-created collage card representing an aspect of your personality or Soul. The magic of these self-generated soul images is that they are a genuine source of intuitive wisdom which you can use to answer your heart questions. Questions you may have about life, your challenges, the celebrations, the joys and the deeper learnings.

You don’t need to be an artist to create in this group. Everyone becomes an artist by participating in Soul Collage making. It’s fun, exciting, and creates community through deep sharing. It’s truly soul satisfying.

The course is planned to run on the second and fourth Monday on each month from 10 am to 12 pm, starting in June.

JOURNALING FOR SELF DISCOVERY The Sacred Space Inside Us “When the still quiet sacred space within our hearts is accessed, it will pour forth its love and grace into our lives”. Journaling is a wonderful way to access that sacred intimate space, the exercises in this course will allow you to do that. They are derived from the work of Ira Progoff, who was a practicing depth psychologist and Director of the Institute for Research in Depth Psychology at Drew University from 1959 to 1971. Dr. Progoff conducted research on the dynamic process by which individuals develop more fulfilling lives. As a psychotherapist, he found that the clients who wrote in some form of a journal were able to work through issues more rapidly.

“Journal writing is a voyage to the interior” (Christine Baldwin).

The course is planned to run in July.

If you are interested in enrolling in these courses, please contact the office on Tuesday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm or email [email protected]. COVID-Safety

Members are reminded to consider each other by staying at home if feeling unwell, especially as we are approaching the peak time for colds and flu.

Members are also reminded good hygiene practice are essential in minimising the spread of all viruses. Members are asked to use disposable cups or bring their own cups when if making a hot drink and to frequently use the hand sanitise provided at each entrance and in the kitchen.

Please use the QR code to record your attendance at activities held at St Mary’s. Ask someone to help if you do not have a smart phone.

Page 6 Activities Coordination Team Notes

Despite a snap seven-day lock down in late May, which caused all U3A activities to be suspended for the duration, 33 groups used the St Mary’s rooms with a further six in the hall and 21 at off- site venues.

Proposed activities that included a Bahasa Indonesian language short course; Board Games; Chimes and Bells; and Soul Collage have not so far secured suf- ficient interest to offer yet. There seems to be reluctance from members to join new activi- ties mid-year, perhaps due to the colder weather. As a result, while new activities will con- tinue to be sought and introduced where possible, the emphasis will be on planning for these and other new activities to commence next year with promotion at Open Day and at Enrolment Day.

Other new activities currently on offer are Journaling for Self-Discovery and Arm Chair Travel. Please see additional details in the July BUZZ. These and other proposed activities may be offered as a Tuesday Talk later in the year as a way of introducing them for com- mencement in 2022. Members interested in participating in these activities are invited to express their interest by contacting the office.

As the Convenor for the Cryptic Crosswords for Beginners group, which meets on Monday mornings, wishes to step down, a new Convenor is being sought for the group.

St Mary’s has advised that groups using the hall from Tuesday, 20 July to Friday, 23 July will need to make other arrangements as St Mary’s needs the Hall and Narthex to prepare for its Art Show on 23 to 25 July. Affected Convenors have been notified with most choosing to not hold their activities during that period. The Choir and Tuesday Yoga will continue by using the Church.

Tuesday Talks are scheduled for the second and fourth Tuesday in Room 1. The presenta- tion on Petanque was cancelled due to the extension of restrictions on meeting indoors and will now take place later in the year. Please see details of July Tuesday Talks elsewhere in the July BUZZ. Members wishing to attend need to enrol on U-MAS or contact the office. Members who would like to have their names added to speak at a Tuesday Talk are encour- aged to contact Jennifer Goddard.

A proposed session from Ambulance Victoria on defibrillator use is planned to be offered lat- er in the year.

Members have been reminded to consider each other by stay- ing home if feeling unwell, especially during Winter, the peak time for colds and flu. They have also been reminded good hy- giene practice is essential in minimising the spread of viruses. Members have been asked to use disposable cups or bring their own if making a hot drink and to frequently use the hand sanitise provided at each entrance and in the kitchen. Page 7 Activities Coordination Team Notes

Members are reminded to wear their name badge when attending activities as the reverse of the badge contains emergency contact details. Members who do not have a current (green) 2021 badge are asked to collect their name badge from the office.

The office is open each Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm with volunteers ros- tered on each week. New volunteers continue to be sought to create an- other team that can open on another day. Some members have shown their willingness to volunteer in the office on Thursdays or Fridays. If you are interested in volunteering to help in the office either on a Thursday or Friday, please contact the office.

Activity updates If you or someone you know is interested in learning how to better use a Win- dows Computer, please contact David Guymer on 0412 024 163 who is running one-on-one training on Mondays from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

The Monthly Movie at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, 20 July is Murder on the Orient Express, starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench and Leslie Odon Jr. Members need to be enrolled in this activity to attend. The movie will be in the Church if more than 16 members attend. No food or drink is per- mitted in the Church. A gold coin donation is sought to assist in the cost of hiring the Church. Lunch will not be provided, so please have lunch before you come to the movie.

Convenors and members are reminded to regularly check the website at u3abendigo.com for the latest updates relating to COVID restrictions and changes to activities.

Please contact the Activities Coordination Team at [email protected] or phone the office on 0490 858 469 if you have a membership, activity enquiry or suggestion.

GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS

Our garden group were very fortunate to manage one garden visit early in May before the Covid 19 lockdown, and what a beautiful, gorgeous garden it was. This garden was home to our own garden members, Kate and George, their property, almost one acre, at the far end of Myrtle Street, quite a steep block which makes building a garden from very little to quite a marathon effort.

The garden had an excellent variety of very healthy native and ornamental shrubs and trees, our garden members were hard pressed to find a bare patch of soil anywhere, Kate told us that all the plants are grown in the existing soil. But what really did amaze us was the enormous amount and variety of succulent’s growing everywhere, in pots of every shape size and colour, in every spare patch of soil all over the garden, it was amazing and beautiful. Kate has promised to one day give us a lesson on the growing of succulents. A lovely morning tea again, many thanks to Kate and George for another great morning.

A few hints on growing plants in pots, inspired by Kate

By using very large containers to grow plants, it is possible to grow a range of shrubby type of plants such as waratahs and banksias. This method of growing some of the more spectacular native plants , regardless of where they live. Obviously the key to success lies in the right potting mix for the job. The best way to ensure that you have a mix that is suitable is either to make it yourself or to buy a mix that has an Australian standards logo on the bag ( this consists of four ticks on a black background) to make it yourself is quite complicated, you need to find some good instructions.

Page 10 ACTIVITY NOTES

GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS cont’d In order to grow plants in pots, an understanding of a few additional points is required. The first thing to recognise is that drainage in pots improves as the height of the container increases. In other words a taller container will give better drainage. You should go for the tallest container you can get. Another point to watch is that you do not over pot your plant. Plants should be moved into larger pots by a series of steps up in pot size. If you place a small plant in a very big pot, you run the risk of too much moisture being retained around the roots. A good rule of thumb is to step up the diameter of the top of the pot by say, 5 centimetres each time you repot. Thus, if you start with a 10 centimetre pot, move next to a 15 centimetres, then 20 centimetres and so on.

Fertilise with a slow release fertiliser, watering your plants will gradually release the fertiliser over the coming months. If your plant has shrunk away from the sides of the pot, due to the addition of peat moss or pine bark in the potting mix and the water is draining straight through, soak the pot in a bucket of water, this should solve the problem.
