01 FST ANNUAL REPORT 2017/2018 FOREWORD

FST is the membership and development body for professional dance, opera and theatre in , bringing the sector together to speak with a collective voice, to share resources and expertise and to promote collaborative working. We represent a network of over 200 performing arts organisations and individuals throughout Scotland and across a range of contexts, scales and artform practice. I would particularly like to thank Amanda Liddle, our General Manager, and Margie Jones, our Finance and Administrative Assistant, for their warm welcome and support throughout a year of significant change in the team and FST itself. As members know, this year our strategic role in supporting the performing arts in Scotland was recognised through regular funding which brings together the various projects we deliver for the sector into a single funding stream. Our pleasure on hearing this was tempered by the process itself and its impact on our members. Our initial response has been to ensure that we open up more free, lower cost and heavily subsidised training opportunities for our members. We will continue this focus in the coming year as we listen to the needs of the sector, bring colleagues together to share expertise and good practice and advocate for positive change for the sector.

We derive our strength and influence from the energy and experience of our membership. All our work this year has, as always, been informed by their views and enhanced by their input. Members generously give their time, expertise and resources for the benefit of their colleagues and the wider sector, investing in each other and in the future of the industry in a variety of ways both large and small. I would also like to offer my personal thanks to the Board for their support and engagement in my first year as Director. As a team we are all profoundly grateful to our members across the sector for their collaboration and enthusiasm for the work we aim to do in helping to support the management and development of a confident and ambitious dance, opera and theatre sector creating work of the highest quality.
