Women should uhite against rape

THE increase in cases of rape in the Police's daily crime reports is quite alarming. It is dear that something has to be done. While rape cases - affecting a spectrum of women from , babies to the elderly - are being reported more and more frequently, women's movements in this country are largely silent on the issue. Last year a group known as Women's Solidarity drew up a document recommending a number of legal reforms to make things less traumatic for rape survivors. They for warded the document to various Government departments and women's organisations for consideration, but there appears to have been little movement on this vital issue. In the meantime the rape statistics are escalating at a frightening rate. ' Women's organisations should turn their attention torais ing awareness of the scale and severity of Namibia's rape problem. One idea would be to organise a national confer ~ COLLAPSE OF COM M UNISM •.• Youths in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, chanting as they stand on the toppled statue ence on rape, where experts and rape survivors could of Lenin last year. Women's Solidarity itselfplans to revive the organisation's counselling service in the coming months, so that rape victims will at least have someone professional to talk to Unhappiness with democracy and provide advice on future action. While women's organisations shouldJackle this issue as a priority because of the alarming increase in rape cases, the individual woman cannot afford to stand aside. If necessary, and if there is not a drastic reduction in rape in 'post-communist' Europe cases, then the women of this country should unite as one and take to the streets to protest, as the women of Liideritz LONDON: Two years after the collapse of communism, ania showing a majority - 52 a dim view of the economic did not so long ago. a majority of people in East and Central Europe are dis per cent - satisfied. situation.
