Cemetery and Crematoria Records on microfilm at The Hive

Worcestershire Archaeology and Archive Service

2012 Introduction The first cemetery in was opened in Norwich in 1819. At the beginning of the 19th century, burying the dead was the responsibility of the Church of England with non-conformist ministers being forbidden to conduct funerals in the parish churchyard. While non-conformist communities had been able to found their own burial grounds since the later 17th century, there were few of these. In one of the earliest cemeteries to be opened was Tallow Hill (1823). There are also a number of records for non-conformist cemeteries including Brailes, and Worcester Society of Friends Burial Grounds. Modern day interest in cremation started in the 1870s. The first official cremation took place at Woking in 1885, and the first municipal crematorium opened in Hull in 1901. The Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service holds registers of cremation at Worcester from 1960-1988.

NOTES

1. Includes a register of service burials 1939-1947. 2. Some numbers have been deleted

The following notes should be used in conjunction with the aperture cards and the annotated aerial photo of the cemetery.

Main Drive is an extension of McIntyre Road. The Lich Gate, now removed was originally positioned in the middle. For convenience it has been assumed that McIntyre Road is aligned east – west. Near and Far are used to denote distance from the Lich Gate.

There are eight main divisions: The plot numbers are generally read like a page, i.e. left to right and continued on the line below. The top of each page is usually north; therefore the numbers increase towards the south west. Additional plots that have been inserted have been prefixed with ‘a’.

 Aperture cards 80 – 81 This is the far north west division. This is the first area to be used.

 Aperture cards 82 – 83 This is the near north west division (The curved paths are difficult to trace.)

 Aperture cards 84 – 85 This is the south west division adjacent to the railway line.

 Aperture cards 86 – 87 This is the near south east division. 21  Aperture cards 88 – 89 This is the near north east division.

 Aperture cards 90 – 91 This is the far north east division.

 Aperture cards 92 – 94 This is the far south east division adjacent to car park.  Aperture card 95 This is the very far north eastern division.

The Manager at Astwood Cemetery, should be consulted regarding any queries.
