16 17 ILLINOIS PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA SONS OF THE SAN JOAQUIN CARMON DELEONE, Music DIRECTOR The upbeat, air-tight, three-part family harmonies of the Sons of the San Joaquin are Pops Concert - Cowboy Classics being heard in a lot more places these days. This sound has carried Joe, Jack, and Lon Saturday, November 22, 1997, 8:00 f».m. Hannah from church and community The Center for Performing Arts, Qovernors State University gatherings to places like Switzerland where traditional cowboy music is even more revered University Park, Illinois than modern country music, and the Arabian peninsula, where they found enthusiastic Carmon DeLeone, Conductor receptions from people who regard their own Sons of the San Joaquin, Soloists traditions to be a close parallel to our cowboy heritage. The Sons of the San Joaquin sound first took shape in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada PROGRAM Mountains, where the Hannah family had moved from depression-era Missouri. "There were some prominent cattle ranches there," says Jack, "and that's where our romance with cowboys RICHARD HAYMAN began. Our dad became a fan of the Pioneers back in the '30's, and he'd sing a lot of those Pops Hoe-Down songs. We learned our first ones from him, and became great fans of theirs too." Jack and Joe performed with their family at local gatherings and eventually began traveling to perform on weekends while pursuing degrees in education, playing some professional baseball, and DMITRI TIOMPKIN becoming schoolteachers. Jack was a high school counselor and coach (he was baseball Coach A President's Country of the Year for the Western Region United States in 1980), and Joe was a junior high teacher and coach. Both have performed as church soloists and in operas and musical theater. All the Hannahs are Horsemen. Jack also breaks horses, ropes steers and does day work on area A TRIBUTE TO CARMEN DRAGON ranches. Lon became a second-grade teacher and also had experience singing in church, in Featuring his arrangements of musical theater and with the Benett Consort, a vocal group often compared to The Manhattan Oh Susanna Transfer. The trio's love of cowboy music won out, and wben Lon asked Jack and Joe to join him, the group took shape. Wide Missouri Yellow Rose of Texas They gained a needed break when Lon met cowboy singer Gary McMahon at a Western Music Association convention and the trio was invited to perform at the 1989 Elko, Nevada Poetry Home on the Range Gathering. There, they ended up singing on stage with , who invited Turkey in the Straw them to join him on his Cowboy Songs album and helped produce their Warner Western debut, A Cowboy Has To Sing. This was followed by Sons of the Silver Screen, that revives B-Western soundtrack material, some of which has never been recorded since its use in the INTERMISSION original movies. Excerpts from this project are performed live with video projection of a large collection of authentic B-Western promotional photographs. Their newest Warner Western ROBERT RUSSELL BENNETT release From Whence Came The Cowboy quickly became a career milestone by featuring Jack Western One-Step Hannah's highly praised originals. A critically acclaimed video of the same title is a tribute to the history of the cowboy. Cowboy Classics In 1992, Joe and Jack were able to take earlier retirement from teaching to pursue the Sons' growing career full-time. Lon took a leave of absence from teaching before resigning in mid- Featuring 1993. There are a number of avenues of expression opening up to this dynamic trio. Their SONS OF THE SAN JOAQUIN "Sons With Symphony" performances offer an evening of western music with symphony orchestra and they are continuing to field international invitations. Television appearances Jack, Joe, and Lon Hannah include the Grand Ole Opry, Austin City Limits, and Nashville Now. They also appear in Randy Travis' music video, Cowboy Boogie. The Sons are finding growing fan support throughout the United States while touring on their Tonight's concert is sponsored in part by own as well as with The Cowboy jubilee featuring Warner Western labelmates, cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell and Western troubadour Don Edwards.
