St John the Baptist Clayton, St Cosmas & St Damian Keymer and St Francis of Assisi

SEPTEMBER 2019

From the Rector Back to school greetings! I hope you all have had a good summer and enjoyed the hot weather and maybe had a holiday as well?

In September the women's breakfast will continue on the first Friday of the month at the Rectory, please contact Tamara for details. The men’s break- fast has been less successful and needs to find a new day and format that works. Men just don't seem to be around on Friday mornings so if anybody would like to suggest a new format for the day and time I would be interested to receive an email from you with your ideas!

We had a lovely service back in June giving thanks for the ministry of Fr Tony Brown in which I spoke about his long ministry as a Priest. Fr Tony read one of his poems and we watched a classic Pathe news film on him and the 'ton uppers' a legendary motor- cycle club that Fr Tony was a member of. You can watch the video by going on to Youtube and se- lecting “ton-up boys meet vicar” 1962. (Two of Father Tony’s poems appear later in this publica- tion.) 2

This month we celebrate the life of St Cosmas and St Damian Church at our Patronal Festival so do come along and join in with the activities and hopefully there will be a dry barbecue as well. (Could hap- pen?!)

It is also a special month for St Francis as we cele- brate the 50th Jubilee of the Church being in Priory Road.

With prayers and blessings

Fr Alex Rector of the Parish

Urgently Needed A treasurer for the Parish. Anne Knowles is retiring from the post in the Spring and she would like to be able show her successor ‘the ropes’ over the next few months. If you feel you could take on this role please contact the Rector.

A PARSON’S POEM FOR PASSERS -BY A TIGER CUB IN SUSSEX

I can tread the soil of Ditchling Common And make my way around the clay-pit pounds. I can stride across the high point of the downs And view the Ditchling roof-scapes and its church.

But with my friend, a Triumph Tiger Cub I can twist and turn along the Sussex lanes. My Sports Cub takes me off the road Along rough tracks and bridle-ways.

This classic bike made over forty years ago Gives thrill and joy to me astride its seat; And as I travel round the Vale of Sussex Fresh views as well as breeze can pass before my eyes.

I find myself renewed in spirit and give thanks To Christ God’s Son who leads us on a pilgrimage, Which takes us to those higher hills above Where we can then enjoy the view of God’s new world.

Revd Anthony Brown.

8 AUGUST’S PARSON’S POEM FOR PASSERS-BY

Mary Christ’s mother is honoured in August. We rejoice and praise God; she showed trust to the end. The day a Saint dies is their heavenly birthday, So with Mary it’s the day when her earthly life ended.

At first Christians called the feast Mary’s dormitian, Ancient title Eastern Orthodox Churches still use. They honour her greatly; she bore God in her womb. So in the name was her falling asleep.

Then in the sixth century among Latin Catholics There were those who described the death day of Mary As Assumption into heaven in body and soul. Though faced with a mystery we honour Christ’s mother.

We know we ourselves fall asleep at life’s end And trust we will also be assumed into heaven Where we with our soul and new body now raised Will enjoy with Christ’s Mother God’s heavenly glory.

9 Youth Worker Hello All, Arklight youth group finished the school year with a BBQ which saw a great number attend with parents attending as well as younger and older siblings, we also had a new member join us for the evening; the group is going from strength to strength and it is such a great outreach with us also seeing some members attending church on a semi regular basis - such great news. If you feel you could get involved that would be amazing as numbers grow, we will need more adults to help. We also will be seeing around 6 members moving from the younger group to the older group. Work Experience seems a long way ago now but we had Harry join us for a week in July and he got in- volved with parish life as a youth worker. He spent his time helping at all our youth outreach and was a great help with planning and prep for the holiday ac- tivities. We wish to thank him for all his hard work and support over that week and we wish him well and every success for his future.

10 Youth Alpha starts on Monday 16th September at 6.30pm and we will be running 11 sessions at this time and then running an all-day session on Saturday 7th December to finish our time together.

We will be asking the young people to book in as we will be looking at providing a meal with each session SO ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP BY DONATING AND PROVIDING A MEAL FOR ONE OF THE SES- SIONS? If so, please speak to or email Gary and we can arrange which date.

This is going to be an amazing time to help answer all the big questions about faith for them and also to bring some to faith.

Please keep this in your prayers

11 Family Fun Holiday Activities We have had 2 sessions of our holiday activities and our first of the painting party was a great hit with us seeing 80 people through our doors with a queque outside at 10am with people wanting to get in, we even had people coming from Brighton to join us - what an amazing testimony to what we are running.

. Our second session was based on Superheros and it was another hit with us seeing 65 people come through our doors for this session. It has been so good to see this outreach happen and talking to some people it has been received so well and they look forward to it every year.

12

But I want to thank all those who have helped with cutting out, prepping a craft and coming on the day to help run the sessions without all of that support this would not have happened this year so a mas- sive thank you from me.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for their support and we hope to start some improvement for the youth in St Francis garden now we have secured £1000 grant.

Blessings Gary
