Related materials: Not applicable Location of originals: Not applicable Location of copies: Not applicable Published in: Not applicable Biographical information: Jean-Paul Michaud was born in 1943 to Sylvio and Irene Michaud. He was raised and educated in the town of St. Agatha, Maine. He graduated from Fort Kent State College in 1964 and, after 2 years in the United States Army, worked at the Library of Congress. He received his Master's degree from Louisiana State University, and in the fall of 1970, Michaud accepted a position as a beginning librarian with the New York Public Library, where he remained for thirty years. After retiring in 2000, he has worked with other volunteers in Prospect Park and with Big Apple Greets, an organization that provides an opportunity for New York City tourists to meet local residents. Scope and content: This collection is divided into two series: maps and other materials. It consists of a variety of materials collected by Michaud, some obtained through auction. Included are numerous maps of Maine and Canada, dating from 1632, as well as a copy of Louis Hémon's Maria Chapdelaine (1928) containing uncut pages and woodcut illustrations. Of interesting note is the 1838 map of Maine on which Washington County extends to the Canadian border; Aroostook County was not established until 1839. The collection also contains three plastic potato bags, two from Labrie Farms in St. Agatha, and the other from Edwin Pelletier and Sons, Inc. of Frenchville, both located in Aroostook County, Maine. An unsigned proclamation for a "Day of Public Thanksgiving and Praise" is printed with John G. Sawyer as Secretary of State; Sawyer served in this position 1850-1853. All notes and source information were provided by the collector. Inventory: Series 1: Maps, 1632-1972, undated 1. COMMUNITY OF WATERVILLE, MAINE BY ALBERT C. FECTEAU B.A., St. Michael's College, 1951 A THESIS Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (in History) Division of Graduate Study University of Maine Orono June, 1952 June, 1952 M.A. History THE FRENCH CANADIAN COMMUNITY OF WATERVILLE, MAINE Albert C. Fecteau ABSTRACT In the early 1800's, there was a slow migratory movement from Lower Canada into the United States. The major causes for this flow of immigrants were first: a flourishing Republic adjacent to the Canadian border which offered economic opportunity; second: the existing colonial dissatisfaction or ethnic difficulties between the French Canadians and the British rulers; and third: the dismal economic outlook within Canada. Most of Waterville's early French Canadian immigrants were led to this locality by one or all of these motives. They came a few at a time and some occasionally returned to their Canadian farms or villages. Several developments quickened the migration. The first was the building of the `Kennebec Road' in 1830. Twenty-five years later, the construction of railroads made travel ever easier. Then came the Civil War in 1861 with its many offers of employment. However, it was the building of the cotton mills in 1874 and in 1882 that attracted the greatest number of French Canadian immigrants into Waterville. These people, generally poor and largely illiterate, suffered many hardships. Many of these were common to industrial communities of the Northeastern section of the United States in a period when laisson- faire was the prevailing philosophy.

HISTORIC LEWISTON FRANCO-AMERICAN ORIGINS PRINTED FOR THE LEWISTON HISTORICAL COMMISSION LAYOUT, DESIGN, COPY PREPARATION BY KEITH CHAPMAN HALFTONES BY DONAT NADEAU PRESS AND BINDERY BY DAVID J. HAYDEN CENTRAL MAINE VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE AUBURN, MAINE -1974- CONTENTS PREFACE .................................................... ...................................4 1. LEWISTON'S FRANCO- AMERICANS THEIR ORIGINS AND EARLY HISTORY ................................................... .. 2. LITTLE CAN ADA AND VICINITY A BUILDING SURVEY ................................ PREFACE When Mayor John Beliveau created the Lewiston Historical Commission in 1969, he charged it with the task of discovering and commemorating events and places significant in Lewiston's past. The Historical Commission is seeking to fulfill this charge by publishing a series of short studies on different aspects of the city's history. This pamphlet is the first of the series, and it emphasizes one of Lewiston's outstanding characteristics, its Franco-American heritage. In the first section of this study, Miss Charlotte Michaud, assisted by Mr. Adelard Janelle, explains when and why the French-Canadians came to Lewiston and describes the man ner of life that these early immigrants led. It is an account of particular signifi cance for the 60% of Lewiston's population that come from French-speaking homes. It is also significant for anyone seeking a better understanding of Lew iston and its inhabitants. Miss Michaud and Mr. Janelle are admirably qualified to speak for Lewis ton's Franco-Americans. Mr. Janelle is a well-known leader in several of the French social organizations, such as Institut Jacques Cartier and Union Saint Jean Baptiste. The Canadian Council of French Language and the New England Franco-American Committee have awarded him special recognition for his out standing service to the French-speaking community.

Open Letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Mr. Vladimir Makei Dear Foreign Minister Makei On 16 February 2021, the appeal hearing of Natallia Hersche, a Swiss citizen, is scheduled to take place in Minsk. Ms Hersche was arbitrarily arrested on 19 September 2020 at a peaceful women's rally in Minsk. During her violent arrest, she had, according to her own statement, "in fear of her life", pulled the mask off the face of a masked security guard, who was not identified as such, and scratched him in the process. At first instance, Natallia Hersche, a dual Swiss-Belarusian citizen, was found guilty on 7 December 2020 of a crime under Article 363 of the Belarusian Criminal Code (resisting a police officer) and sentenced to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment. According to Belarusian and Swiss human rights organisations, the persecution of Natallia Hersche is politically motivated and Ms Hersche is to be considered a political prisoner. We agree with this assessment and are of the opinion that Natallia Hersche has not committed any crime that would justify a prison sentence. This is because the spontaneous protest in which she participated was exclusively peaceful. Such a protest must be protected by the Belarusian authorities according to paragraph 131 of the OSCE Guidelines on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly. The detention of the participants of the peaceful assembly by members of the Belarusian Ministry of Interior went far beyond the state's "obligation to protect public order" and thus violated OSCE international standards. The trial of Natallia Hersche at first instance took place in violation of the principles of a fair trial.
