The lyrics from the “Laverne and Shirley” sitcom theme song of the late 1970s enthusiastically say “we’re doin’ it our way.” At Evangelical Community Hospital, “doin’ it our way” simply means we’re keeping the patient at the center of all we do.

This past fiscal year, we expanded our orthopaedic service line, opening an office and physical therapy gym at the Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness, and unveiling the Center for Orthopaedics on our main campus. Both new spaces were designed to help us more efficiently meet the community’s growing musculoskeletal needs. We added to our cadre of specialty physicians, ensuring our patients continue to have access to the care required to address a variety of chronic and acute health issues. And, we announced the largest expansion and renovation project in our history with the aim of providing private rooms and bathrooms for our patients, ensuring our inpatient facilities match the quality of care delivered in them.

All of this—and much more—supported an overarching effort to position the Hospital to continue to provide exceptional healthcare, accessible to all, in the safest and most compassionate atmosphere possible to build a healthy community.

Amid the constant noise of consolidations, acquisitions, and mergers in the healthcare industry, I can offer but one guarantee to the Susquehanna Valley:

The amazing men and women who make up this extraordinary organization will continue to deliver on the Evangelical mission for years to come.

That’s just our way.

Kendra Aucker, President and CEO PRIME time hospital announces expansion, renovation project

5 In the spring of fiscal year 2018, Evangelical Community Hospital publicly unveiled plans to build a 112,000-square- foot, four-story expansion and renovate 20,000 square feet of existing space with the aim of moving to single patient rooms and private baths. The project will not impact the total number of licensed beds at the Hospital.

Named PRIME—Patient Room Improvement, Modernization, and Enhancement—the total project will cost about $72 million and take about three years to complete.

“While the healthcare landscape is in a constant state of change, what remains at the center of Evangelical’s focus is the ability to provide high-quality care to those who have entrusted us with their health,” said Kendra Aucker, President and CEO. “PRIME will help us do that in a physical environment that facilitates and encourages healing and matches the compassion and quality care the community has come to expect from us.”

Private rooms bring the benefit of better infection control for patients, afford patients a better opportunity to rest and recover, and allow for more confidential communication among the provider, patient, and his or her family members.

Beyond aesthetics, the rooms have been designed to give physicians, nurses, technicians, and other team members the space they need to provide efficient care in an appropriate setting.

“The Board is confident the PRIME project will position the Hospital for a future of doing what is in the best interest of those who depend on us for access to modern healthcare, and we thank our generous community for its continued support,” said John Meckley, Chair of the Board of Directors. continued on next page...

Exterior of PRIME In addition to private rooms and baths, PRIME comprises:

• New Step Down Unit (24 beds), renovated space for the Intensive Care Unit (12 beds), and associated support spaces;

• New General Medical and Surgical Unit (28 beds) and associated support spaces;

• New Orthopaedic Unit (24 beds), new orthopaedic rehabilitation gym, and associated support spaces;

• And new lobby, café, gift shop, guest services, conference center, medical infusion center, pre- admission testing, and main thoroughfares.

Creating Spaces Based on Shared Vision

In June, Hospital staff members, providers, patient advocates, Board members, and leaders were invited to take tours of mocked-up patient rooms and bathrooms proposed for PRIME.

The mocked-up rooms, one acute care and one critical care, included not only furniture but also locations of essential room items such as medical equipment hook-ups, outlets, sinks, trash receptacles, patient documentation devices, IV stands, and more. The rooms were intended to allow individuals to have a “real-feel” of how the room would function and suggest ways the space could be improved.

Virtual reality was also used so participants could literally put themselves in a finished room to get a feel of how the new finishes and spaces will be when completed.

“There’s just something special about this place.”

It’s a sentiment heard time and time again when you speak to patients, employees, providers, volunteers, Board members, and the community about Evangelical Community Hospital.

Over the last several years, executive leadership at the Hospital has focused on channeling that long-held sentiment into a body of highly engaged employees and providers committed to delivering the best, most efficient care to the community.

The transformation, realized through the efforts at every level of the organization, is nothing short of miraculous.

In an abbreviated engagement survey at the close of fiscal year 2018, 49.9 percent of employees were characterized as engaged, meaning they have an emotional commitment and loyalty to the organization with a willingness to expend discretionary effort toward its success. That’s an increase of 14 percent from the survey at the close of fiscal year 2015, and it pushes Evangelical from the 33rd percentile to the 1st7 nationally.

With 54.4 percent of physicians and advanced practitioners defined as engaged, the Hospital is setting the bar for provider engagement at the 97th percentile nationally. Notably, that’s an 18 percent increase in provider engagement from fiscal year 2015.

Patients could see, hear, and feel the improved engagement, and our patient satisfaction survey scores reflected the change—nearly 80 percent scored the organization at a minimum of 9 out of 10 for the Hospital’s overall rating. Volumes also increased with net patient revenue growing by 15 percent over the same period. continued on next page... 10 Employee Engagement (2015–2018) 60%

How did Evangelical do it? • Continued transparent communication from executive leadership, including an annual “state of the Hospital” presentation to all stakeholders as well as branded, timely emails sent organization-wide addressing all manner of issues and successes internally first.

• Held mandatory, strategic trainings aimed at breaking down work silos, creating a culture of accountability, and driving negativity out of the work environment.

• Performed regular rounding on patients and staff to more quickly identify and address needs while helping establish expectations.

• Challenged department leaders to establish action plans to target engagement opportunities within their own teams.

• Responded to employee feedback with the launch of an internal health and well-being initiative known as EvanWELL.

• Publicly announced the long-awaited PRIME (Patient Room Improvement, Modernization, and Enhancement) project designed to bring the Hospital’s infrastructure to the level of the care being delivered in it.

11 mobile health taking healthcare on the road

In the dull scenery of a cold January 2018, a new and colorful 38-foot bus drove onto the Evangelical campus. With its arrival, an excitement about how healthcare could be delivered to patients in the most rural corners of Evangelical’s surrounding areas could be felt from both employees and the community.

Mobile Health of Evangelical, in the most relatable terms—a doctor’s office on wheels—began serving patients of the area almost immediately.

This new concept in healthcare delivery was born from the understanding that living in a rural community can sometimes present unique challenges, including the distance that exists between home and the nearest hospital or clinic. Coupled with the lack of public transportation options, Mobile Health fills the gap by taking medicine outside of buildings and walls, directly to people where they are, making the boundaries of healthcare invisible.

More than $350,000 was raised through individual and business donors from the community to fully fund the new service. Inside, the bus includes a registration area where patients can check in and check out, a blood draw area, a restroom, and two exam rooms. It can be parked wherever there is enough room to be stationed for a few hours without disturbing local business.

“Mobile Health has given us the opportunity to open the doors of communication with people from all over. We get to partner with businesses and see first-hand where services are needed the most,” said Jamie Caputo, Mobile Medical Unit Coordinator. “Most importantly it helps us to address a need for access to affordable healthcare, which we discovered in our most recent community health needs assessment.”

“It’s been an adventure getting started, and we can’t wait to see where the journey takes us,” she added.

Since its arrival the bus has been used for family healthcare, cardiac care, women’s health, comprehensive blood screenings, a variety of free health screens, and wellness education outreach. The bus has found itself at country stores, supermarkets, recreation facilities, local industrial sites, and more. Mobile Health travels to counties in close proximity and others beyond the normal reach of the Hospital: Centre, Clinton, Juniata, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties.

New Center for Orthopaedics Introduced on the Campus of Evangelical

The main office of SUN Orthopaedics of Evangelical, located at 900 Buffalo Road, Lewisburg, began to outgrow its space. A decision was made to move the main practice to the campus of the Hospital and introduce a new Center for Orthopaedics to the community.

The Center, which opened for patient care in June 2018, is located at the rear of the campus and boasts 18,960 square feet of patient and staff space. SUN Orthopaedics and Physical Therapy at Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness

15 In July 2017, Evangelical announced the opening of a new orthopaedics office and physical therapy space at the Miller Williamsport Center for Recreation and Wellness. 220 The Hospital opened its 8,500-square-foot office in a leased space at the Miller Center for many reasons. Ease of access for care for mobility challenged patients 180 was a priority, but it also locates SUN Orthopaedics 15 of Evangelical and Physical Therapy in a facility that is focused on health, wellness, and recovery.

In 2015, Miranda Marks, then 24, stumbled in a way that resulted in a herniated disc in her spine, sometimes called a slipped or ruptured disc. That led to Marks’ first meeting with Matthew Eager, MD, SUN Orthopaedics of Evangelical. Dr. Eager recommended a discectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the damaged portion of a herniated disc, which prevents the disc from irritating or compressing nearby nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness.

“The surgery went well, and it would have been fine for a more sedentary person,” Marks explained. “But about a year after my surgery, my job changed. I needed to do far more heavy lifting, which wasn’t something Dr. Eager or I expected, so by 2017 the herniated disc came back. Only this time it came with unbearable pain. I couldn’t stand up, get to work, or even walk my dogs. I was pretty depressed by the time I saw Dr. Eager again.”

An MRI of Marks’ back showed that the disc originally operated on had slipped once again. Studies have reported that repeat surgeries for disc herniation occur in about 10–25 percent of cases. The disc no longer provided the necessary cushion between two vertebrae, and making matters worse, the disc was pushing against a nerve. “I could have done another discectomy, but since Miranda’s lifestyle wasn’t going to change, I felt that would only be another temporary fix,” Dr. Eager said. He recommended a lumbar total disc replacement, which meant he would replace the damaged disc in Marks’ lower spine with an artificial disc. The goal is to restore optimal internal structural support and allow the patient to function normally.

A lumbar disc replacement is considered major surgery, so Marks took a few days to review her options.

Eventually, she went with Dr. Eager’s recommendation—and immediately after surgery, knew she’d made the right choice. “To my surprise, all of my nerve pain was gone. Completely gone! Dr. Eager changed my life.”

For the next month, Marks went through physical therapy, slowly regained full mobility, and is now back on full duty at work. “I didn’t think I would ever feel this good again,” Marks said. “I couldn’t have Miranda Marks, asked for a better surgeon and recovery.” recipient of a lumbar total disc 16 replacement. adding addingstrength strength and anddepth depth new opportunities for growth and new organizationopportunities for growth and organization

1617 In healthcare, success is defined by adaptability to change and not resting on being good but always seeking ways to be great. Change comes from a delicate balance of putting the patient first and taking into account the ever-changing healthcare landscape, existing financial situation, and how those factors may impact the way healthcare is delivered.

In fiscal year 2018, Evangelical continued to look for and take advantage of new opportunities, to add to our team of experts, and to look at the way we’re organized to serve the mission of providing accessible, quality healthcare to those who count on us.

Lewisburg Gynecology and Obstetrics, PC

In August 2017, Evangelical announced the acquisition of Lewisburg Gynecology and Obstetrics, PC. The practice became part of OB/GYN of Evangelical, and operations management is now under Evangelical Medical Services Organization (EMSO).

The purchase of the practice brought to Evangelical the well-known expertise of George Miller II, MD, FACOG, NCMP, and his practice’s successful history of providing comprehensive women’s healthcare. The acquisition also brought Kay Zlockie, MSN, CNM, to the midwife team of OB/GYN of Evangelical.

Bringing on the Experts

Part of Evangelical’s strength is the solid foundation of experts who deliver direct care to our patients. Fiscal year 2018 saw that foundation strengthened even more by the addition of multiple physicians, several in existing specialty areas and one in a completely new service, Endocrinology of Evangelical. continued on next page...

In fiscal year 2018, Evangelical Community Hospital earned a full, three-year accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. In addition to achieving compliance in all areas reviewed, the Hospital received commendations in two key areas of cancer services: nursing and public reporting.

With this stamp of approval, patients seeking cancer care can be assured the Hospital’s cancer program meets 34 quality care standards essential to providing comprehensive, patient-centered cancer care. The accreditation is achieved through a thorough survey process and must maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of care to maintain its status as a CoC-accredited facility.

“This accreditation represents years of hard work and dedication to meeting the requirements of the CoC. This massive achievement was made possible through our entire Cancer Services team working collectively to make sure all of the parameters are met and that we are doing what we need to provide exceptional cancer care,” said John Kryston, DO, Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratory at Evangelical, and chair of the Cancer Committee at the Hospital.

At Evangelical, Cancer Services takes a multi-disciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among medical professionals including surgeons, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This collaborative method of taking the whole patient into consideration results in improved patient care.

“The CoC accreditation program provides a successful structure for our Hospital to focus on the quality of its cancer care in the areas of early diagnosis, cancer staging, treatment, follow-up, survivorship, and compassionate end-of-life care,” said John Turner, MD, FACS, Medical Director of Cancer Services at Evangelical.

At Evangelical, patients who receive cancer care have access to clinical trials, genetic counseling, and patient- centered services including psycho-social support and a patient navigation process.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield community benefit report when we work together, everyone wins

49 Evangelical has long valued our surrounding communities, not just as a provider of healthcare to the people who reside there but as an integral part of the richness these communities bring to the area.

Fiscal year 2018 was a year of supporting the depth of offerings from community partners in new ways that can have a greater impact on the overall prosperity of the area. The Hospital sponsored endeavors such as the Selinsgrove Regional Engagement Center, the Central PA Foodbank, the Lewisburg Children’s Museum, the Ronald McDonald Family Room, and more. Continued support was given to the Girls on the Run program, which promotes health as well as building self-esteem in young girls throughout the area.

The Community Health and Wellness Department continued to work within the local schools for programming and early healthy habit formation, touching on topics of hygiene, eating right, and the dangers of smoking, to name a few. Community Health staff also conducted Hello Hospital tours for first graders of local school districts to allow students to see what happens inside the Hospital and to help alleviate anxiety associated with a Hospital visit.

Members of the Evangelical family of experts also gave of their time throughout the year representing the Hospital in a variety of ways. Some served on local boards of non-profit and community-based organizations. Through the Hospital’s Speaker’s Bureau, others gave their time at senior centers, clubs, senior living facilities, libraries, churches, and more speaking on health topics that impact the community.

In whatever way support was given—financial, educational, or medical—each effort helps build the bridges of partnership for a community that works together. continued on next page...

Combining the power of local healthcare facilities, Evangelical works with others to complete a community needs assessment every three years. Through the assessment key healthcare issues impacting our communities are identified and then tackled until the next community needs assessment is conducted. The 2015 assessment indicated that Evangelical’s focus should be on issues surrounding behavioral health and substance abuse, health concerns related to lifestyle, health outcomes as they relate to the impact of socio-economic status, and access to healthcare.

As the final year of implementing solutions for the 2015 assessment comes to an end, a look back shows that much headway has been made. At Evangelical large and small efforts have been applied to the four key issues:

• The successful institution of an opioid overdose reversal program for first responders and other organizations relating to the growing opioid crisis.

• The creation of a task force that looks at addiction (drug and alcohol abuse) and how to connect individuals and $23,713,957 – Government families to the resources needed. Program Short Falls • Consistent efforts by the Community Health and Wellness Department to provide health education and $3,661,315 – Bad Debts low-cost and free screenings to people of all ages.

• The opening of Urgent Care of Evangelical and the $2,005,284 – Value of Donations introduction of Mobile Health of Evangelical as access to care points for the entire community, especially those who are affected by the unique challenges of rural healthcare options, lack of public transportation, $952,207 – Volunteer Services and insurance issues.

$812,653 – Unreimbursed As part of the commitment to the community, Evangelical is taking part with other healthcare facilities in a new Value of Community Health community needs assessment for 2019. The assessment, Education Programs which gathered research in the early part of 2018 to identify the top health and wellness needs in the region, TOTAL: $31,145,417 has targeted three main areas of focus: access to care, behavioral healthcare, and chronic disease prevention and management. Though the issues have changed slightly for the new assessment, one thing remains the same—the key to making a difference is to work together with the goal of building stronger, healthier communities. 3,292 participants in preventive screenings
