Out of the Furnace The Invisible Woman 33 The Life Career Award Malcolm McDowell Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. McDowell channeled hardship into his art and made his movie debut in 1968 with British director Lindsay Anderson’s If...., playing, aptly enough, a school rebel. Though he followed this up with Figures in a Landscape (1970) and The Raging Moon (1971), it was McDowell’s malevolent smirk in “If….” that landed him his most iconic role — in Stanley Kubrick’s landmark sci-fi thriller A Clockwork Orange. Christiana Kubrick recalls that her husband, while in his private screening room, called out to the projectionist to turn the reel back when he saw McDowell. He did that four more times. “We have found our Alex,” the director announced. Adapted from the novel by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange earned McDowell great acclaim and nominations from the Golden Globes, the National Society of Film Critics, and the Film Critics Circle for Best Actor. McDowell’s Alex, a young hoodlum brainwashed by a dystopian British government of the near future, became a symbol of brutal youth in 1971. However, the actor recently said, “For years, I didn’t see the same film everybody saw.” He couldn’t truly appreciate that angry young man until he himself was old enough ach year, the Saturn Awards presents the Life to comb white hair. 47 The George Pal Memorial Award Gregory Nicotero he George Pal Memorial Award is given to an individual who contributes to the high quality of filmmaking and helps elevate genre films and television to Tnew heights. And there’s no one who embodies the spirit of legendary filmmaker George Pal, who was the producer and/or director of such classics as War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, and The Time Machine, more than Gregory Nicotero. Gregory Nicotero is not only a gifted SFX and make-up wizard on hundreds of motion pictures and television, but he has made the leap into the director’s chair to become a true creative force to be reckoned with. Born on March 15, 1963, in , Pa., Greg began his career 25 years ago alongside fellow Pittsburgh natives and horror aficionados director George Romero and effects master Tom Savini. Greg says, “When I started with Savini, Tom was the rock ‘n’ roll make-up effects guy ... Between him, Rick Baker, Dick Smith, and , in the late ‘70s, when make-up effects were really coming into the forefront, they were the stars of the movies.” Most filmmakers have that one film that sucks them in and inspires them — and for Greg, it was Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1976). After viewing the movie, Greg claims to have become hooked on special effects. He explains, “... I kept thinking, ‘How the hell did they do EFX Group has provided eye-popping and jaw dropping that?!
