Sox Bits | Center Field http://www.outincenterfield.com/2009/05/sox-bits-4/ home about faq contact links submit Sox Bits by Texy 2009 May 18 at 12:05 pm Random bits of Sox-related news and tidbits, all jumbled together. Brace yourselves: the Red Sox might be exploring the possibility of a trade for catcher Victor Martinez. As usual, the names mentioned in connection with that trade are Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard and Lars Anderson. Meanwhile, Larry Lucchino hints that Buchholz (and Bowden) will get the call up this season. Jacoby Ellsbury’s hitting streak continues, now at 13 games. Maybe we need to take a page from the Rays’ playbook, and “accidentally” mess up the lineup cards so that our pitchers bat. On Sunday, several of the pitchers took BP - Josh Beckett knocked out two homers, Brad Penny hit one as well, and Jon Lester went nuts with three homers. At least we’ll be set for interleague play. This is just mean. Kind of funny, but mean. Is Jon Lester paying the price now for his overuse in 2008? Joe Haggerty points out that Jon pitched 210 1/3 innings during the regular season, and an additional 26 1/3 “high-stress” innings during the playoffs — before that, he had less than 155 IP in the majors, total. Closing out with a cool find from Eric Wilbur: the optical illusion of a curveball. tags: Brad Penny, Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Michael Bowden, Sox Bits next post: Gotcha! »» previous post: «« Sounds of Sox 19 Responses leave one → 1.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, September 23, 2017 * The Boston Globe Red Sox put new formula to work in win over Reds Peter Abraham CINCINNATI — The Red Sox were up by a run after four innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night and Rick Porcello had thrown only 57 pitches. His performance had been erratic, the righthander putting eight men in base. But Porcello expected he would stay in the game because that is what managers traditionally do, they let starting pitchers try to hold a lead. But most managers do not have a pitcher of David Price’s caliber in the bullpen and John Farrell does. Farrell turned to Price in the fifth inning and he handed that lead over to Addison Reed with two outs in the seventh. Craig Kimbrel took over in the ninth and the Sox beat the Reds, 5-4. It was a dress rehearsal for the playoffs, the Sox using Price for multiple innings to get to Reed and Kimbrel. That combination can be as good if not better than what any other playoff team has. “You saw it last year in the playoffs, so many starters went five innings or even less. You need that guy to bridge the gap,” Reed said. “When that guy is David Price, it doesn’t get much better. We’re pretty damn excited to have him down there.” With the Yankees losing in Toronto, the Sox now lead the American League East by four games with nine games to play. “The ball’s in our court.

LOUIS -- The Reds have every reason to take a moment and savor the flavor of a rare series win at Busch Stadium. Sunday's 8- 0 victory over the Cardinals not only gave Cincinnati two of three games, but also just its fourth series win out of the last 29 at St. Louis since 2006. It was July 27-29, 2015, when the Reds last came to town and took a series from the Cardinals. Sunday's win was powered by Adam Duvall's 3-for-4, two-RBI game while starting pitcher Scott Feldman cruised with six-plus scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one walk and collecting six strikeouts for his first win with the Reds. More > "It's not facing demons and ghosts of series in years past. Our team is better than it's been in the last few years, with a lot of new guys that just want to come in and play baseball, play hard and play well," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We pitched two shutouts here. Not only is that unlikely, but to come in here and be able to do and extract two wins is a big deal for us in the early start of a season." Coming off of 7 1/3 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts on Opening Day vs.
