  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

Olentangy Local School District Literature Selection Review Teacher: Byard/DeGiorgio School: Hyatts Middle School Book Title: Nightjohn Genre: historical fiction Author: Gary Paulsen Pages: 112 Publisher: Laurel Leaf Copyright: 1995 In a brief rationale, please provide the following information relative to the book you would like added to the school’s book collection for classroom use. You may attach additional pages as needed. Book Summary and summary citation: (suggested resources include book flap summaries, review summaries from publisher, book vendors, etc.) Sarny, a female slave at the Waller plantation, first sees Nightjohn when he is brought there with a rope around his neck, his body covered in scars. He had escaped north to freedom, but he came back--came back to teach reading. Knowing that the penalty for reading is dismemberment Nightjohn still retumed to slavery to teach others how to read. And twelve-year-old Sarny is willing to take the risk to learn. Set in the 1850s, Gary Paulsen's groundbreaking new novel is unlike anything else the award- winning author has written. It is a meticulously researched, historically accurate, and artistically crafted portrayal of a grim time in our nation's past, brought to light through the personal history of two unforgettable characters. Provide an instructional rationale for the use of this title, including specific reference to the OLSD curriculum map(s): (Curriculum maps may be referenced by grade/course and indicator number or curriculum maps with indicators highlighted may be attached to this form) CCS #1-10 Reading Literature Include two professional reviews of this title: (a suggested list of resources for identifying professional reviews is shown below.

THE HOUSE The only time we’re allowed to touch is when the skin lights up. Otherwise the hands are quiet. Air lies on them or they lie on wood feeling nothing. No one’s home in all this huge house— we’ll never visit all the rooms of it if we go on living as we do, from shoe to shoe. 2. Down so many stairs. Have you been to all my rooms? Have you wielded broom and distaff there, cleaned and woven and made new? Have you set irises and freesias to renew the languid air, dragged the surly gardener with full arms to blaze my dark apartments? Num question, expecting ‘no.’ The house is random still, the ornaments from every Christmas tree are scattered through all the rooms, and the scary devil cat from Halloween lives on in attics you never measured. Dust, sunlight and water dripping— these are my house, and hallways never ending. I don’t know how to get so small. 16 June 1995 POPLAR This huge poplar like a cottonwood but cottonless and there’s the riverpale hint-heated, morning.

For Allison Acknowledgements Crafting this dissertation, like the overall experience of graduate school, occasionally left me adrift at sea. At other times it saw me stuck in the doldrums. Periodically I was tossed around by tempestuous waves. But two beacons always pointed me to quiet harbors where I gained valuable insights, developed new perspectives, and acquired new momentum. My advisor and mentor, Josh Piker, has been incredibly generous with his time, ideas, advice, and encouragement. His constructive critique of my thoughts, methodology, and writing (I never realized I was prone to so many split infinitives and unclear antecedents) was a tremendous help to a graduate student beginning his career. In more ways than he probably knows, he remains for me an exemplar of the professional historian I hope to become. And as a barbecue connoisseur, he is particularly worthy of deference and emulation.
