CONTENT / MƏZMUN 7 Chovgan (Azerbaijani: Çovqan) – is an ancient eastern sporting team game with horses and ancestor of the modern polo game. From times immemorial it was considered an aristocratic game and held in a separate field, on specially trained horses. Nowadays, chovgan is spread in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

Komanda oyun növü olan çovqan yarışları eramızın birinci minilliyinin ortalarında formalaşmış, yüzillər ərzində Azəbaycanda, Orta Asiyada, İranda, Türkiyədə, İraqda və diqər ölkələrdə məşhurlaşmışdır. Mənbələr XII əsrdə İslam dünyasının mədəni mərkəzlərindən Bağdadda Orta Şərq ölkələrinin atçaparları arasında tarixdə ilk beynəlxalq çovqan yarışlarının keçirildiyi göstərir. Çovqan yarışlarının Azərbaycanda çox qədimdən məşhur olduğu faktlarla təsdiqlənir. Örənqalada aparılmış arxeoloji qazıntılar zamanı tapılan şirli qab üzərində çövkən oyunun təsvir təsviri bu oyunun IX əsrdə Beyləqan şəhərində yayıldığını əyani sübut edir.

Belə ki, XIX əsrdə Hindistandan İngiltərəyə gətirilən bu oyun getdikcə inkişaf etdirilmiş, yeni qaydalar əsasında Amerika və Avropa ölkələrində yayılmağa başlamışdır.

Məhz ingilislərin təşəbbüsü ilə bu oyun “polo” adı altında ilk dəfə 1900-cü ildə Parisdə keçirilən II Olimpiya Oyunlarının proqramına daxil edilmiş, beləliklə, Qərb sivilizasiyasında bu ad təsbit edilmişdir.

1979-cu ildə Cəfər Cabbarlı adına kinostudiyada Çovqan oyununun qaydalarını və tarixinin əks etdirən “Çovqan oyunu” adlı sənədli film çəkilmişdir.

Atüstü milli oyunlarımızın qorunub saxlanılması, qədim tarixə malik atçılıq ənənələrinin bərpası, ölkəmizdə atçılıq turizminin təbliği, gənc nəsildə bu sahəyə marağın oyadılması məqsədi ilə 2006-cı il dekabrın 22-26- da, Prezident Kuboku uğrunda çovqan milli oyunu üzrə turnir keçirildi. Turnirdə Azərbaycanın 8 şəhəri Şəki, Ağdam, Akstafa, Balakən, Qazax, Oğuz və Zaqatala iştirak etdi. Sözügedən kubok uğrunda turnir Şəkinin Respublika Atçılıq Turizm Mərkəzinin bazasında təşkil edilir. Yarışın təşkilatçısı Azərbaycan Respublikası Mədəniyyət və Turizm Nazirliyinin Respublika Atçılıq Turizm Mərkəzidir.

8 Çovqan və ya çövkən – Azərbaycanda milli atüstü oyun növlərindən biridir. Komanda oyun növü olan çovqan yarışları eramızın birinci minilliyinin ortalarında formalaşmış, yüzillər ərzində Azərbaycanda, Orta Asiyada, İranda, Türkiyədə, İraqda və qonşu ölkələrdə məşhur olmuşdur.

Mənbələr XII əsrdə İslam dünyasının mədəni mərkəzlərindən Bağdadda Orta Şərq ölkələrinin atçaparları arasında tarixdə ilk beynəlxalq çovqan yarışlarının keçirildiyi göstərir.

Being a team game chovgan competitions were formed in the middle of 1st millennium AD and became popular over the centuries in Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Iran, Turkey, Iraq and neighboring countries. Sources show that in the XII century at the cultural center of the Islamic world, Baghdad the first international com- petitions on chovgan were held among the riders of the countries of the Middle East. The popularity of chovgan game in Azerbaijan since ancient times is proved with facts. During archeological excavations made in Orangala, the picture of chovgan game on lion vessel proves that this game was popular in Bey- lagan in IX century.

One of other facts proving that chovgan is ancient Azerbaijani game is repeatedly describing of this game in Azerbaijani miniatures, information given about its playing rules. The British played a great role in sprea- ding of chovgan game like other games developed in the East, in remote corners of the world. Thus, this game brought from India to England in XIX century had been developed further and began to spread in Europe and America based on the new rules. Indeed, at the initiative of the British this game under the “polo” name for the first time was included in the Olympic Games held in Paris in 1900, and thus, this name was established in the Western civilization.

In 1979, a documentary called “Chovgan game” was shot by an Azerbaijani film studio named after Jafar Jabbarly, where rules of the game and also its history from the times immemorial up to nowadays were reflected in.

On December 22–25, 2006 a tournament of national chovgan game was held in Shaki, Azerbaijan, for the Presidents Cup, in which participants of 8 cities of Azerbaijan – Shaki, Agdam, Akstafa, Balakən, Qakh, Gazakh, Oguz and Zagatala – took part. Participants from Aghstafa gained a victory after the fascinating competition lasting three days.

Ther organizer of the tournament is Tourism Equestrian Center of Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
