  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Mayor and Members of the City Council
Mayor and Members of the City Council: This is the weekly report for the week ending October 31st, 2014. 1. Meeting Notes The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18th, 2014. Please note that there will not be a City Council meeting on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4th. 2. Rebuilding Parchester Park – “All in a Day’s Work” On Saturday, October 25th Livie & Luca (generous funders), The Trust for Public Land (funders), Boys and Girls Club of El Sobrante, Richmond Trees, the City of Richmond, the Parchester community and hundreds of volunteers came together to work toward a common goal: Building community with community through beatification of an open space. In one (1) day, these groups came together to build a brand new park in Parchester! The planning committee engaged Parchester residents and children in designing their open space at “Design Day” in July 2014. During Design Day, children and residents shared their dreams for their open space. The planning committee reviewed the wishes and placed the dreams into a reality on Build Day, Saturday October 25th. Preparation of the site was completed three days prior to Build Day and RichmondBUILD was diligent in prepping the site to ensure it was ready for volunteers. The beautification of the Parchester Park Project includes a new play structure, rehabilitated baseball diamond, landscaping that included the planting of 37 trees, children’s musical garden, picnic benches, a BBQ grill, and an arbor covering the picnic benches. This year “Make A Difference Day” was combined with Arbor Day which was hosted by Richmond Trees.

The old Stephen F. Austin Hotel, where I stayed for the first five years at the tournament was remodeled and renamed. The cost became outrageous there, so we no longer enjoyed staying downtown. Today the Hotel is called InterContinental Stephen F. Austin. Visiting Sixth street became popular and I continued to eat at the Waterloo Ice House. The main attraction in those days was playing at Gregory Gym on the campus of U.T. We always had great pickup games at the student activity center, located right next to Gregory. Jogging was also another passion of mine. Town Lake provided great running trails just south of downtown Austin. Coaching clinics became the norm, as I continued to learn the game. Great times. The person who had the greatest impact on my life was my brother-in-law. This book is dedicated to him. At the age of 10, he began coming over to the house dating my older sister. He was like a family member. For the next twenty years he influenced all aspects of my life.

  • The Fire Inside Kobe Bryant
The Fire Inside Kobe Bryant Chris Ballard June 25, 2009 SI A GREAT MOMENT IN HUMILITY IT WAS not. After scoring 18 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the Conference finals against Denver, Kobe Bryant said of his scoring prowess, "If I wanted to go out there and put up 35 points a night, I could do that." Granted, the Los Angeles Lakers star was just being honest, but tact would dictate that he let others say such things about him. As you may have noticed, though, Bryant isn't big on tact. Time and again over the last decade he has announced the particulars of his awesomeness. As teammate Luke Walton dryly puts it, "Kobe does not lack for confidence." Just as Bryant's bravado irks some—O.K., many—it also makes him riveting to watch: Like the man himself, the manner in which he bears down is never subtle. Spurs forward Bruce Bowen, Bryant's foil these many years, says there's no indicator of an impending scoring binge, joking that you can't tell "by the way he chews his gum or something." But that's not true at all. Rather, his eruptions are almost comically predictable. Former teammate Devean George, now with the Dallas Mavericks, speaks of "that Kobe face where he starts looking around all pissed off." His coach at Lower Merion High in Ardmore, Pa., Gregg Downer, says he can recognize this expression even on TV. In these moments Bryant's youthful impudence, which flummoxed Del Harris when he was L.A.'s coach during Bryant's first two years in the league, resurfaces.
