Martins Bank, Limited, 68, Lombard Street, London, E.C.3, Chisiehurst, Orpington, St. Mary Cray, Farnborough, and Sidcup. Chislehurst, Orpington and Cray Valley Hospital.

In presenting their Report for the year 1928, the Council feel that the Hospital’s position may, in many respects, be regarded as showing definite improvement.

The number of Patients treated was the greatest on record, and it is satisfactory to know that the Hospital is of increasing benefit to local residents.

The financial aspect is more favourable than it has been for some years past. The Ordinary Income, as will be seen from the Accounts, is, after taking into account the interest received on the Legacy monies, slightly in excess of the corresponding Expenditure, although there still remains a debit balance of nearly £700 on Income and Expenditure Account, accumulated during the three preceding years. For Extraordinary purposes, the expenditure incurred was only a little over £250, as against receipts amounting to £10,040. This last sum is, of course, of an exceptional nature, representing the Legacies shown on page 17, and its receipt relieves very greatly the anxiety which has long been felt on account of the weakness of the Capital position.

The Council would here acknowledge their indebtedness to all who contributed, either directly or indirectly, towards the support of the Hospital during the past year.

Generous grants were again received from the Hospital Saturday Fund, the Hospital Sunday Fund and the League of Mercy, in addition to the annual income from the Chislehurst War Memorial Trust Fund. From the Alexandra Day collections the Hospital benefited to the extent of £200, while a further substantial sum was received as a result of the two Polo Weeks at Foxbury, which were organized by Mr. Frank C. Tiarks. ]0

It may be noted that the Subscriptions and Donations for 1928 show an appreciable increase over previous years. This is due, to a large extent, to the efforts of the various local Committees, who have organised house-to-house collections in their respective districts, and special recognition is due to the Members and Helpers of these Com¬ mittees for their energetic and systematic work.

Great assistance has again been rendered by the Ladies’ Linen Association, the value of whose contributions was approximately £99, and by the Collectors for Pound Day. The gifts in kind from these and all other sources are very gratefully acknowledged. Special men¬ tion, it is felt, should be made of the handsome gift by Mr. A. Lawrence, of the Cherry Tree Restaurant, Chislehurst West, of a new Piano for the Men’s Ward.

The Council would take this opportunity of expressing their apprecia- tion of the work of all those who, in their various capacities, have served the Hospital during the past year. Particular reference is made to the Consulting and Acting Medical Staffs, who bear such great responsibility; and to the Matron and the Nursing Staff, on whose devoted care the success of their work ultimately depends.

Grateful acknowledgement is also due to the Chislehurst Contingent of the V.A.D., whose, ready help in emergencies caused by temporary shortage of Staff has been of the utmost value.

Very particular thanks ate due to Mr. P. H. Green, Chartered Accountant, of 17, Ironmonger Lane, E.C.2., who has again audited the Accounts of the Hospital without making any professional charge. Mr. Green is in no way connected with the Hospital, nor does he reside in the area which it serves, but, at the request of the Honorary Treasurer, he very generously offered his services at the time of Mr. Barron’s retirement, and has continued to act in the capacity of Honorary Auditor ever since.

In concluding their Report, the Council would draw attention to a matter which is causing them some apprehension. There are, it seems, some who feel that the ability of the Hospital to meet its expenditure is an indication that their personal support is no longer needed—at any 11 rate, to the same extent. This, however, is a totally erroneous view, for clearly the withdrawal of Subscriptions would throw the Hospital into debt to a corresponding degree. It is true that the very substantial addition to the Capital Fund on account of Legacies places the Hospital’s finances on a much sounder footing, but it must be realised that this money does not represent income, in the ordinary sense, available for current needs. The interest, however, will be merged with the normal income, and will, in effect, form that reserve which it has always been the endeavour of the Council to build up—to provide, primarily, for the proper maintenance of the Hospital’s buildings and equipment. Thus the position, broadly speaking, is that the Hospital is provided for in respect of extraordinary expenditure, and only needs funds to cover its ordinary outgoings.

The present outlook, therefore, is encouraging, and it is earnestly hoped that the Council, in their efforts to keep the Hospital free from -debt, will continue to have the generous co-operation of local residents. -7
