Volunteers for the borough’s Chil- dren’s Centres say volunteering has helped give them an advan- tage in looking for employment. Carla Kenyon, Joe Kay and Elaine Samson all help out at their local chil- dren’s centre. Elaine Samson from Shadsworth started volunteering when she at- tended the Family Voices group at Shadsworth Children’s Centre. Family Voices is a group made up of representatives from families who use the centres. She now volunteers daily and has taken on almost every role at the centre from working on reception, in the community cafe to running the li- brary. “Whatever needs to be done: it’s a chance for me to give something back,” said Elaine.

CONFIDENCE

Elaine from Shadsworth says not only has she lost weight from her ac- tive role but she has gained lots of valuable work experience. L T’s proud to support awards

By Nick Nunn, Assistant Editor, Borough celebrates Lancashire Telegraph

As a community newspaper we at the Lancashire Telegraph were delighted when approached early this year to join with Blackburn Good Neighbours with Darwen Council in the bor- ough’s Good Neighbour Awards. We believe strongly in encouraging community activity and neighbourli- ness and the awards have provided an ideal opportunity to recognise publicly a host of otherwise unsung heroes. As a journalist it’s great to be able to tell uplifting stories too. POSITIVE

Newspapers are sometimes accused of containing too much gloom, doom and disaster. That’s not a fair conclu- sion in our case but it is great to be able to report such positive stories as the wide range of heart-warming activ- ities recounted in the scores of entries that came in. Good neighbours are becoming more and more important in today’s world A century ago towns like Black- burn had a reputation for neighbour- liness. Then people began to move around the country in search of better jobs and traditional ties with family and friends inevitably became more diffi- cult to maintain. Housebuilding changed in the 1950s and 1960s and people began to live more isolated lives with private, enclosed gardens . On March 18, I was elected by the young people of Blackburn and Darwen to be their Youth MP. I was elected on three policies: a better relation- ship between young people and the police; a smart- phone app for bus informa- tion; and cleaner streets. In my term I intend to achieve all of these things. However, my biggest aim is to make sure that young people feel that they have a voice in the council.

Many people may be wondering what I actually do. Essentially, my duty is to represent the views of young people across Black- burn with Darwen.
