Chief Executive Bruce Mackenzie has been named as one of the top ten most influential people in higher education.

In an article entitled ‘Most influential people in Higher Ed’ featured in The Australian on Wednesday 8 February, Mr Mackenzie is accredited for fostering and promoting higher education initiatives within the TAFE sector. His impact on the Australian higher education sector, including advocating a level playing field against universities in regards to commonwealth supported placements, is one of the reasons behind him receiving the mention.

The article showed that it is not only those within Holmesglen who acknowledge the hard work which Mr Mackenzie undertakes not only for the Institute, but also within the TAFE sector.

“Mackenzie has run Holmesglen for its 30 year history. Pragmatic, windblown and quietly assertive, he’s so much part of his institute that it’s hard to imagine it without him,” said Julie Hare, Higher Education Editor at The Australian.

Mr Mackenzie was also recently awarded the Community College Baccalaureate Association (CCBA) Pioneer Award from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The CCBA Pioneer Award is presented annually to individuals paving the way for access to higher education for students in non-university sectors.

Mr Mackenzie talked about the importance of the CCBA Pioneer Award to the institute’s higher education standing; “The award shows that AACC appreciate the path that Holmesglen is setting for higher education opportunities to students.”

May 2012 | 3 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show

Amy Campbell’s individual flower competition entry

Held at the Royal Exhibition Building and surrounding Carlton Moveable Garden, Tomoko Nishida Gardens, the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show was attended once again this year by Holmesglen students and staff.

The prestigious event is ranked in the top five flower shows in the world and is regarded as the largest and most successful horticultural event in the southern hemisphere.

Student work was showcased in the Achievable Gardens display with three unique designs. “Movable Garden” was designed by Tomoko Nishida, who aimed to create a piece for people who do not have much room for gardening but still appreciate plants. She has a strong interest in horticulture and is considering a career in landscape design and continuing her studies further in this field.

After becoming a mum, Brooke Nolan wanted a career change and to develop her interest in gardens. Her work is heavily inspired by her love of native gardens, and designed her display “The Birds and the Bees” to replicate the natural environment.

Mahli Cadman developed a low maintenance garden called “The Main floral showcase Rental”, to inspire people who are renting a house. The design was Desert Scape influenced by the colours of the 1950’s, which were reflected in her plant and pot selection.

Floristry students also had their work on display including a Louis Vuitton-themed shop window display and the main floral design “Desert Scape”, which was showcased in the magnificent Carlton Exhibition Hall. Student Amy Campbell also had an entry in the individual flower competition. Higher Education Update

The Faculty of Business and Finance have partnerships with institutes in five provinces in China at which the Offshore Business Programs Department delivers the Diploma of International Business and the Diploma of Accounting. Once students complete their course they travel to Australia to complete a business degree at the Chadstone campus.

The weekend of March 16 to 18 saw 27 newly arrived students join seven staff members at the Rural Learning Centre, Eildon for the third Student Welcome Camp.

Along with the exceptional good weather and fantastic RLC staff, the students were able to experience all that the great venue has to offer. Students participated in many activities on the Saturday including bushwalking, canoeing on the dam, low ropes course and always a favourite – cooking with resident RLC chef, Corey.

Saturday evening saw everyone attempt some line dancing moves with the skillful help of business and finance teacher, Sue Prior. A campfire, where students got to toast marshmallows drew an end to a fun, activity packed day. After breakfast on Sunday, the students coordination was tested once again with a half hour lesson of Tai Chi followed by a Study Skills program presented by Greg Carman and Srigowri Sarma.

Thanks to all the staff involved including Phillip Wong and Emmy Pham in making this another successful and enjoyable camp.

May 2012 | 11 Zaidee’s “Health Hour”

The Rec Team, along with eight universities and one other TAFE, jumped on board with this years Zaidee’s Physical Feats Campaign and hosted a “Health Hour” event at the Moorabbin campus. The main aim of the campaign is to inspire young adults to be healthy, consider the choice of being an organ and tissue donor and inspire discussion on this very important and personal life giving choice.

To kick off the campaign, three classes of students joined together and participated in a group fitness boxing session run by MSHF training. Prior to the boxing session, Zaidee’s Ambassador/Track superstar Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) pumped up the students with an inspiring talk about Zaidee’s and the importance of keeping your body fit and healthy.

After the session students were treated to a healthy lunch and some time for a photo opportunity with Tamsyn. All students had a blast and were grateful to become aware of and learn more about the Zaidees Foundation.

You can also do your bit and help support the Zaidee’s Rainbow Holmesglen students with track superstar Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) Foundation by coming into Student Services and purchasing a $2 pair of Zaidee’s rainbow laces.

From Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 March, the Rec Team visited each of the campuses to celebrate Easter. Helping the Rec Team was a special visitor who was seen hopping around. The Easter Bunny greeted students on campus and gave away delicious Easter eggs. There was also an Easter egg hunt in the morning, which unfortunately didn’t last too long with all the chocolate lovers hunting around.

In conjunction with the on campus events, each day the Rec Team ran a competition through the Rec Team Facebook Page and hid a chocolate Easter bunny. Students were given clues on Facebook and then searched the campuses high and low for the hidden bunny. Attached to the bunny was a fantastic gift voucher. The competition was a great hit with students with lots of positive feedback left on the Holmesglen Rec Team Facebook page.
