Ordinary Time 10.18.2020 Know God | Love People | Seek Renewal hopebtown.org God Gathers — We Prepare Preparation for Worship “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” - Stephen Covey “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” - Ernest Hemingway God Calls — We Praise Call to Worship (Standing) From Psalm 7 Leader O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pur- suers and deliver me, lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rend- ing it in pieces, with none to deliver. All Arise, O Lord, in your anger; lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies; awake for me; you have appointed a judgment. Let the as- sembly of the peoples be gathered about you; over it return on high. Leader The Lord judges the peoples; judge me, O Lord according to my righteousness, and according to the integrity that is in me. Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous - you who test the minds and hearts, O Righteous God! All My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day. I will give to the Lord the thanks due his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High. Song of Praise (Standing) “All Creatures of Our God and King” All All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing—Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise him, O praise him—Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in Heav’n along— O praise him, Alleluia! Thou rising morn in praise rejoice, Ye lights of evening find a voice, O praise him, O praise him—Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! And all ye men of tender heart, Forgiving others take your part—O sing ye, Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, Praise God and on Him cast your care, O praise him, O praise him—Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness— O praise him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One, O praise him, O praise him—Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Words Francis of Assisi, c. 1225; tr. William Draper, 1919; music Lasst Uns Erfreuen, 1623 Prayer of Adoration God Invites — We Confess Community Confession of Sin (Be seated or kneel) Based on Luke 8 Leader Precious Lord and Savior, when the storms of life come our way, we are quick to become fearful, and often forget your love for us. All You could often rightly say to us in these moments just as you did to your disciples, “Where is your faith?” Forgive us, Lord, for our lack of faith. Just as the wind and waves obey you, our desire is to follow and obey you as well. Leader Your Word tells us to be careful then how we hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks he has will be taken away. All Forgive us for the times we have not listened well to your Word. Have mercy upon us we pray. Give us ears to hear your Word, Father, that we may know you and walk in your ways. Personal Confession of Sin (Silence is kept) God Assures — We Give Thanks Declaration of Forgiveness (Standing) From Joel 2: 12-13 Leader “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” All Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and he relents from sending calamity. Song of Assurance “The Love of Christ is Rich and Free” All The love of Christ is rich and free; Fixed on His own eternally; Nor earth, nor hell, can it remove; Long as He lives, His own He’ll love. His loving heart engaged to be, Their everlasting Surety; ‘Twas love that took their cause in hand, And love maintains it to the end. Chorus: Love cannot from its post withdraw; Nor death, nor hell, nor sin, nor law, Can turn the Surety’s heart away; He’ll love His own to endless day. Love has redeemed His sheep with blood; And love will bring them safe to God; Love calls them all from death to life; And love will finish all their strife. He loves through every changing scene, Nor aught from Him can Zion wean; Not all the wanderings of her heart Can make His love for her depart. Chorus At death, beyond the grave, He’ll love; In endless bliss, His own shall prove The blazing glory of that love Which never could from them remove. Which never could from them remove. Christ as Prophet – The Word to Us Scripture Reading (Standing) Luke 8:4 - 25 Reader 4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” 9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. 16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” 19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” 22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?” Sermon (Be Seated) Rev.
