LEFT BANK BORDEAUXS

In total, in the Left Bank of Bordeaux, the best wines come from eight different appellations or communes located primarily in what is often referred to as the Medoc. The Left Bank of Bordeaux is the home to all of the official 1855 Classified Bordeaux wines. The Medoc also includes the Haut Medoc, Moulis, Medoc and Listrac appellations. In total, there are 13,727 hectares planted with vines in the Medoc. The Left Bank is also the home of all the Cru Bourgeois estates. While most of the Cru Bourgeois are located in Haut Medoc, others are situated all over the area from as far north as slightly above St. Estephe to below Margaux in the south as well.

Graves

Located on Bordeaux's left bank, Graves is known for its gravel soils, which retain the sun's heat and help ripen grapes. In 1987, Pessac- Leognan was separated out from the wider Graves appellation, taking with it the all of the region's Classed Growths. Though Graves produces both red and white wines, it is mostly known for its elegant -based blends, which are typically redolent of dark cherries with savory spice, chocolate and a distinctive minerality. Wines here tend to be lighter in body and mature more quickly than those from the Haut-Médoc, yet still have fantastic aging potential.

Haut Médoc, Moulis, Listrac The Médoc contains the most full-bodied wines in France, and possibly in the world. Tannins are kept high by a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are often bitter at first but open up with age. One of their main assets is the fact that they are extremely long- lasting. Médoc contains several regions, the most well-known of which are the four small villages that make some of the world's greatest Cab. 744966 2014 Ch Belle-Vue Cab Sauv-Merlot-Petit Verdot 7 12 x 750 92 WE 801687 2015 Ch Charmail Merlot-Cab Sauv-Cab Franc-Petit Verdot 1 12 x 750 91 WE 811845 2017 Ch Citran Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc 1 12 x 750 91 JS 797549 2014 Ch de Braude Cab Sauv-Merlot 5 12 x 750 92 WE 848123 2018 Ch de Braude NEW Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot 6 12 x 750 91 WE 813903 2016 Ch Fonreaud (Listrac) Cab Sauv-Merlot-Petit verdot 9 12 x 750 17 JR 814274 2016 Ch Lamothe Bergeron Merlot-Cab Sauv-Cab Franc-Petit Verdot 3 12 x 750 17 JR 813893 2016 Ch Malescasse Merlot-Cab Sauv-Petit Verdot 2 6 x 750 91 WS 763551 2011 Ch Mauvesin Barton (Moulis) Merlot-Cab Sauv 3 12 x 750 15.5 DC 801719 2015 Ch Mauvesin Barton (Moulis) Merlot-Cab Sauv-Cab Franc-Petit Verdot 7 12 x 750 93 WE 756598 2015 Ch Paloumey Cab Sauv-Merlot 9 12 x 750 91 JS 802001 2013 Goulee Blanc Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon 7 6 x 750 802002 2014 Goulee Rouge Merlot-Cab Sauv-Cab Franc 2 6 x 750 89 WS 737780 2015 La Closerie de Camensac Cab Sauv-Merlot 4 12 x 750

Margaux Bordeaux Margaux wines tend to be deep ruby in color, perfumed and floral, particularly with notes of violets and lilacs, and soft, silky tannins. Less masculine and powerful than wines from other regions of Bordeaux, Margaux wines are typically more refined and elegant. Margaux is the furthest south appellation in the Médoc in Bordeaux's Left Bank and boasts many soil types, including limestone, chalk, clay, sand and gravel, meaning style and quality of Margaux can vary dramatically. The best Margaux wines come from grapes planted on gravel soils with good drainage.

Pessac-Léognan

Blended from Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, Pessac-Léognan wines are beautifully balanced with fine-grained structured tannins, & exhibit classic notes of tobacco, cassis, dark cherry, leather and tar, as well as a distinctive minerality. Some of the best red wines are described as smoky and have hints of truffle. Pessac-Léognan also makes whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sèmillon. Located within the wider Graves appellation in Bordeaux's Left Bank, Pessac-Léognan boasts the region's best soils; the resulting wines have excellent aging potential.

Saint Estephe

The appellation is the closest to the point where the Gironde estuary empties into the Atlantic Ocean, and the soils tend to be heavy and deep here, giving many Saint Estephe wines a kind of rusticity. Saint Estephe wines (all red) are cabernet sauvignon dominant followed by merlot and cabernet franc. Differentiating itself with higher percentages of Merlot than the other villages, St-Estèphe has special, intriguing flavors epitomized by the only 2er cru, Château Cos d'Estournel.

St. Julien Situated between the widely popular communes of Margaux and Pauillac in the Médoc of Bordeaux's Left Bank, Saint-Julien combines the elegance of the former with the boldness of the latter. All three Léoville houses are located here. Saint-Julien offers balanced, age-worthy blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with deep ruby colors and notes of cassis and cedar. Depending on the producer, some style are more perfumed while others exude more power.

Sauternes & Barsac

The Sauternes & Barsac appellations lie further south still. They are situated in an area where the interactions of the Garonne and Ciron Rivers cause early morning mists to encourage the white wine grapes to be attacked by the bacteria Botrytis. This brings about what is known as ‘noble rot’ - a natural process that concentrates the sugar levels in the grapes. When pressed these grapes release the nectar that develops into the famous sweet white wines of Bordeaux. The wines of this region were also classified in 1855 & the most famous and highly ranked of all was Château d’Yquem. Even today its wines stand out as being something extremely special compared to its counterparts.

While and Saint Emilion together have roughly 6,369 hectares planted with grape vines, the entire area known as the Right Bank is much larger and more diverse, when you consider the important, satellite appellations. While all Bordeaux wines are blends, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the dominant grape varieties, in the Right Bank. Although you will find some growers also plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot as well. This unique combination of soil types and grape varieties are a large part of what has helped make the wines from Right Bank of Bordeaux so famous, as well as sought after all over the world.

Fronsac The Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac vineyards are on the limestone soils of the higher land away from the river bank; the cool soils help the grapes reach full size during the hotter vintages. But poor soils and the difficult Merlot grape require careful . In recent years, a new generation of winemakers, investment in equipment and improvements in wine-making techniques have led to better quality, juicy yet elegant wines that can compete with their better known neighbours.

Pomerol

The Pomerol appellation is the smallest of all in Bordeaux and has no classification system. It is adjacent to St Emilion and its boundaries are defined by a unique soil structure of blue clay. Merlot grapes thrive on this iron-rich clay. Pomerol wines are rich, decadent reds, with notes of chocolate, dark cherry, plums and spice, soft tannins and elegance courtesy of the Merlot grape. The most lush—and expensive—wines come from a plateau of clay, gravel and iron, while lighter, more acidic wines come from the region's sandy soils.

St. Emilion

Made predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Saint-Émilion wines tend to have a rich, mouth-drying tannic structure, which is balanced by the more juicy characteristics of plum and black cherry fruit, along with chocolate and sweet spice, developing savory tobacco and cedar characteristics with age. The best Saint-Émilion wines will exhibit a terrific mineral vein, the result of vines being planted on the region's limestone escarpment. Vines planted on sandy soils tend to produce grapes that make lighter styled wines.

There used to be numerous different ‘Côtes’ appellations (such as Côtes de Castillon, Cotes de Franc, 1er Côtes de Bordeaux and Côtes de Blaye), but these have now been amalgamated into one title “Cotes de Bordeaux” appellation.
