When nature effortlessly and generously gives her beauty to the world,

colouring each season. When a child picks a flower from the garden to give to her mother. The first flower we receive from a very special someone. The flower

nervously placed in a button hole. The flower that follows those three little

words. The flowers she holds as she walks down the aisle.

Flowers to celebrate. Flowers for good luck. Flowers as the purest symbol of

love, saying more than words can.

Their beauty is short-lived – they bud, blossom and then wither. It is an

exclusive, rare moment; one can’t really own it, only borrow and

experience it. A reminder to appreciate the present moment,

before it is overtaken by the next.

When a flower is carefully painted onto fine , those passing

moments are kept alive. Each piece reminding you of the moments in life that

really matter; the occasion on which the porcelain was given to you, carefully handed over. Moments in life that are elevated and become treasures.

Each piece of porcelain holds a story of love for you to keep.

Royal Copenhagen porcelain has been created with rare skills, care and hand- craftsmanship for over 240 years. To become a porcelain painter takes time and an immense amount of training in order to master the craftsmanship which makes each handmade piece precious and unique. Each item is hand-painted with delicate individual brushstrokes that build up the pattern little by little; one wrong stroke and the piece is ruined. Although the pattern has been the same since the very beginning, the hand-painting technique has gradually changed over time. When the piece is finished, the painter signs the underside with their unique signature, marking it as an individual work of art. If you look closely and compare pieces, you can see the individuality of each painter ’s technique; in the brush strokes, the flowers and the use of colour.

THE BACKSTAMP OF LONE’S HERITAGE PIECE

My Blue Fluted Plain soup tureen dates back to the 1890’s and was part of my great-grandparent’s

large Blue Fluted Plain dinner service used in their home on an island called Mors. The dinner service

was eventually passed down to my mother. She was born on Mors in 1928 as the first child of their

eldest son, but sadly her father passed away when she was just six. As her grandparents died

while she was a teenager, she inherited the dinner service but first started using it in her own house-

hold in 1949 when she married my father. When I hold the tureen now, I think about that;

the feelings of sorrow and a life without her father. As a child, it was my job to lay the table with the

dinner service and it was something over which I bonded with my mother. We knew the service so well,

we could refer to each by its number underneath! It was a common interest that we shared

and for me, it developed into a greater passion for porcelain that also led me to my profession

of cultural science; understanding porcelain as a language and way to understand social groups.

I also have a very tactile relationship with porcelain and a deep appreciation of the craft that goes

into each piece. I use it as a creative medium; setting the table, preparing for the conviviality that

will come afterwards. My theory is the more energy you put into the preparation

of the table, the better the energy will manifest during the evening.

THE BACKSTAMP OF ANNA´S 18 HERITAGE PIECE

I love this bowl, I often use it for porridge, eating it in front of the television. It’s part of my daily life,

but also part of my family’s history. It belonged to my grandfather’s aunt, who was married

to a composer. Together they had a huge collection of Royal Copenhagen porcelain. When he passed

away, she was inconsolable and her father, a wealthy landowner was in a position to be able to buy her

an estate in Sweden where she could retreat and grieve. When she passed away, the collection was

inherited by my grandfather. When he married my grandmother, the collection fell under the care of

my grandmother who wasn’t a great fan of this particular design, but did occasionally mix it with the

other blue pieces that she liked. My father eventually took over the collection and some of it was

occasionally used for special occasions. Now a few pieces have been handed over to me.

I know that my plate was broken at some point, and professionally fixed, indicating that although my

grandmother didn’t personally love it, she came from a generation that didn’t throw things away, but

mended things. I like to think that maybe she thought the same way that I do; that it meant something

to somebody and somehow in the porcelain, there are memories of their happy time in Sweden.

I really enjoy using it; it has a lovely, reassuring weight and when I hold it in my hands, I feel like

I am holding something valuable, perhaps all the memories and history. I love the blue colour as well

and mix it with blue glasses and other blue porcelain, just as my grandmother did.

Our Blue Fluted Plain or mussel porcelain comes from my great-grandparents, so when we use it at our kitchen table with our kids, we have five generations represented. My great-grandfather was

Director General of the Danish State Railway and had a large household, requiring a large dinner

service, it was of course, the classic Blue Fluted Plain from Royal Copenhagen. They moved from

Århus in Northern Denmark to Copenhagen. He died after the war and his wife kept the household

and the service and was able to pass it down so eventually, it came to me. Every day I use a tea cup

from the service, for my coffee or tea. Of course, we also use the bigger, more impressive pieces on

occasions and when we do, there is a different meaning around each piece. But I just like the cups;

they feel nice to touch, to drink from and to hold in your hand. We like to use the service and

not keep it for best. Some pieces are a little … well-worn. A few plates look like mice have been

nibbling off the edges! Some are repaired. But that patina doesn’t detract from the sense of history

that we get when we use it. I experience a nice sense of continuity using my family dinner service,

and occasionally remind my kids of that history but generally, I just like that they are growing

up with nice things which are being used every day.

THE BACKSTAMP OF FREJA´S HERITAGE PIECE

I was given this bowl by my grandmother as part of a box of Full Lace when I first moved from home,

at around 18 years old. I think it’s a strange-looking piece with a fairytale quality. I grew up with

an artist mother and architect father and our family home was about function and beauty, so my

taste is towards more simple and functional items. But I like this bowl; its charming awkwardness,

its contrasts and the story behind it. It was bought by my great-aunt, a spinster who saved up and

collected pieces of Full Lace. But my grandmother, who was rather a character, actually stole the

collection from her sister because she believed that she wasn’t taking care of it properly. Of course,

this and other issues caused a rift between the sisters. Like most families, mine has many ripples

and edges. Other pieces in my Full Lace collection are used daily. I love the contrast of serving

an everyday family meal such as spaghetti bolognese in such fancy dinnerware. I tell my children

that the plates come from the 1920’s and have been kept in the family, and they take care

of them. Although this little bowl never gets used in this way, I look at it and it makes me curious.

What were the thoughts behind it? Who decided to put those feet on it, and those edges?

It is romantic but also has an angry quality to it. When I balance it on one edge, it becomes

a small sculpture, which is funny. So I’ll never throw this little piece away or sell it.

Flower Tales

Since the very beginning, flowers have been at the heart of Royal

Copenhagen porcelain. In 1775, the series Blue Fluted Plain was

introduced, also called Pattern No.1. A stylish and elegant flower pattern based on a chrystanthemum was carefully painted in cobalt blue on the elegant

white porcelain. Since then, many of Royal Copenhagen’s classic motifs

have been floral in a variety of expressions on different dinner services.

The very first Flower Tale, Blue Fluted Plain, marks the beginning of the centuries-old Royal Copenhagen story. Inspired by Chinese porcelain art of the time, the floral pattern was pared-down and refined into a more European interpretation to become the signature pattern, sometimes called “Musselmalet” or mussel painted. A closer look reveals the stylised rose, centered in the middle, the long branches with leaves, the chrysanthemums, nut flowers and grass shooting up. Creating this graceful and timeless decoration requires immense discipline; every element is precisely painted but the painter also exercises their own artistic interpretation in the tiny details. These rare decorative skills emphasise the delicate shape and craftsmanship of every piece.

Developed by young design student Karen Kjædgård-Larsen in 2000, the introduction of Blue Fluted Mega signalled the beginning of a new adventure for the classic Royal Copenhagen chrysanthemum flower from the original Pattern No.1. Still carefully hand-painted, selected floral details from the pattern are provocatively enlarged, taking up more space on the white porcelain. A modern classic, the decoration may appear to be simple, but its simplicity requires absolute precision in the execution of every painted detail. This reinterpretation was and still is both comfortingly familiar in its nod to the past and surprisingly refreshing in its innovative thinking. A new flower tale was told and has become part of Royal Copenhagen’s history.

A Florist’s Tale

51

LOUISE MOESTRUP / In her florist shop

I’ve been passionate about flowers since I was a child. I grew up in the country in a house with a garden, near a lake. I was entranced by the changing seasons and how everything was so dead here in the Danish winter. But then Spring came … and it was just amazing to see how the same space would be transformed. I always collected flowers as a kid. When I was about eight years old, I would take my bike and basket in the evenings and go collect flowers from around the neighbourhood to make them into posies and sell them back to my neighbours! “This is the Autumn bouquet, with rose hip, briza, thistle, snowberry, spindle, chrysanthemum, quaking grass and hellebores. It was mixture of a planned vision that I had but I also added the berries that I had spotted in Meeting the Flower Curator the forest, when I was walking my dog.” Louise Moestrup

52

“Here I created a winter wreath from million star and various grasses, working with the different textures. I love putting a small romantic flower together with something tougher: like a delicate ballerina wearing a leather jacket and chunky boots.”

I trained as a florist in a lovely family-run flower shop north of Copenhagen. Now I run my own flower business and believe that a good florist should offer something for every pocket, whether you are student who wants a single flower or someone who needs a big elaborate bouquet to celebrate an event. My shop has high quality products but most important is that there is a real sense of passion for flowers. I don’t see myself as an artist as such. I believe Nature is the true artist. I am merely the curator of that art. I just understand the work and the possibilities of flowers and plants as a creative medium. But to me, Nature is the bigger force at work, bigger than us. I feel that myself; when I am down, I go for a long walk and it makes me happy. So I take a humble approach to the idea of being an artist ... and believe that we need humbleness now, more than ever. “These bulbs are called ‘naked virgins’ in Danish and remind me of those Chinese flowering bulb toys you could get when I was younger. It’s a funny plant, and I love to see both the pretty flower and the bulb that sustains it.”

Meeting the Flower Curator Louise Moestrup

55

“I love the explosion of spring! After being in the dark for so long, it’s like fireworks, I love it! This arrangement has anemone, nerine, briza, cherry branches and more to represent that force of power.” Meeting the Flower Curator Louise Moestrup

56 PATTERN Each piece of Blue and Multicoloured Elements has its own individual, hand-painted interpretation of the Blue Fluted Plain pattern. Multicoloured Elements is hand-painted after firing, which gives it a very unique finish.

A decade ago, in an inspired collaboration between Danish designer Louise Campbell and Royal Copenhagen, Elements was born. A service that playfully raids the Royal Copenhagen design archives, reappropriating centuries old “elements” and features in new and unexpected ways. The classic chrysanthemums, nut flowers, clover and others roam over the sides of items in fresh colourways unique to each piece, as well as in classic cobalt blue, while traditional lacing can occupy center stage in the middle of a saucer, instead of only the edge. Elements takes its edges from Flora Danica, ornamentation from Half Lace and fluting from Pattern No.1, borrowing these ‘elements’ FLUTING EDGES LACING in a subtle yet distinctive way.
