These new premises are perfect for our classes as there is plenty of parking and it is a set back from the main road, making it a safer, easier and more enjoyable time for all our dancers. We have gone from strength to strength over the years. As we come to the end of our third year we look back at the successes of the dance studio. We teach children both in the private lessons from the studio and also in the various schools in the area. This year for the first time we are holding a concert for all dancers, musicians and singers to give the children a chance to perform in a non-competitive forum and of course entertain our community and WOW do we have talent! The dance studio's third annual Feis in February was another hit this year, along with an amazing performance at the Carnegie Arts Centre for Culture night last September. We have teams that compete in Scor every year, which is a great thrill and experience for the dancers. Pictured at Kenmare Primary Schools As we move from Henry Street we hope to carry on the success of the last three years. We would love for you to join us in the ‘Gateway’ Sports which was held last Thursday. Methodist Church for our new classes, the 6 week term commences on Monday 21st May. May Gardening

With Simon Linell Willowfield Garden Centre, Sneem Road, Kenmare. Phone 087 2953990 • [email protected] Schools Gardening website www.raringtogrow.com €40,000 So, this is summer ? and, let’s hope its a good one ! Summer and winter rolled into one...hard to know what season it is, €40,000 but think Positive , it can only get better! The long range weather is always the best....’it will be good from next week on’.....only trouble is, next week....never comes ! €40,000 Growth this season so far has been very poor due to the below normal temperatures and the lack of sun but that will begin to improve now. Lawn fertilizer, weed and moss killer can still be applied for a summer attack on the lawn. By €40,000 attacking now, the sudden growth in grass will help hide the browning moss. The wet weather has prolonged the main planting season for trees and shrubs, so take advantage of this and plant up some flowering shrubs which will provide splashes of colour every year. Roses are growing away madly at the moment but keep an eye out for leaf diseases. A spray of Rose clear will help keep the leaves disease free. The mild winter and wet spring weather has been beneficial to the slugs in the garden so when planting out your summer bedding plants watch out for the nightly raids by small armies of slugs. Put out slug bait or slug traps a few days before planting to eliminate the first line of attack and then keep a close eye on the new plantings for further damage. Controlling these pests at an early stage will lessen the problem later on in the summer. VIEWING In the vegetable garden it has been hard to work the wet soil and cool soil temperatures have slowed down the germination of many of the seeds sown earlier last month. In many case it may be necessary to make second sowings of SATURDAY seeds to replace these earlier casualties. French and runner beans and peas can be sown indoors, under protection for planting out in early June. Alternatively ready to plant vegetable seedlings/young plants can be used to catch up on the 26TH MAY poor early growth . Beans, Cabbage, Cauli, Lettuce..etc are all available in packs for this purpose. Apply a base dressing 12 NOON of fertilizer when planting to encourage a good start and protect against slugs. A covering of ‘fleece’ will aid the establishment of these plants while the weather is still cool. TO 2 P.M. Keep on earthing up the Potatoes and start watching out for the first signs of blight as it warms up later in June. A protective spray should be applied in advance of the, wet and damp, favourable weather conditions that favour blight. Cane fruits have been growing well but watch out for attacks from now on from Gooseberry sawflys and Aphids on Blackcurrants. Deal with these as soon as first spotted. Apples and Pears should have pollinated well and keep an eye on the curling of leaves on the Plum that can be controlled with a regular copper fungicide. The main job however for May and June is the planting up of your summer flowering window boxes, hanging baskets and other patio containers with a wide range of summer flowering plants that are available now. The trailing Petunia, Surfinia or Cascade varieties are certainly the most popular summer container plant due to their wide range of flower colour, strong trailing growth habit and durability. Geraniums are one of the old favourites that can add bulk to a summer arrangement. These are available in a range of colours from white and pinks through to purples with reds being the most popular. These plants would provide the taller centre piece to container arrangements. The trailing or ivy leaf Geraniums would have been the traditional trailing plant before the introduction of the ’surfinia’ petunias. There is also a wide range of other flowering plants with different flower colours or leaf variegations to add to the plants already mentioned. In the line of interesting foliage plants, the silver leafed Helichrysum adds arching stems to hanging baskets and continues to grow on well into the winter. Nepeta, Ivy and Plectranthus also provide contrasting variegated foliage. The white flowers of Bacopa, the blue of Brachycome and the various shades of Verbenas can all add interest to the containers. Bedding plants like, Marigolds, Nasturtiums and Begonia can add an instant splash of colour and the trailing Lobelia can always find a home in any arrangement. All too much to take in ? Call out to the Garden Centre and actually see the full range that is available and then you can mix and match to obtain the combination that appeals to you most. AUCTIONEER • VALUER • ESTATE AGENT • PROPERTY CONSULTANT When planting up your containers slow release fertilizer and a water holding crystal can be used to reduce the amount of watering and feeding you may have to do in the summer. Leave your freshly planted container in a sheltered spot for about a week after planting so that the young plants will be able to recover from any accidental damage caused in the planting process. Remember to keep all your containers watered frequently during the summer ..it’s going to be a hot one ! Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Until next month, happy gardening ? Thanks to John Holland for this report, and some excellent PR work This is a way for all the club and their families to have a great day in the open during the season. air. To cover costs, there’s a €10 charge for adults at the BBQ. If you would After a long season, Inter made it to the Division One Shield final vs. Ballyheigue which Inter had to win to take the shield. This game was enlivened with 30 minutes of the best football the team had produced, but crucially only 2 excellent Killian Spillane strikes to show for it. Many chances went a begging and as luck would have it a determined Ballyheigue team grabbed a goal on the counter just before half time, 2-1 to Kenmare. However, Inter continued very much in control in the second half with Joshua Holland, Bryan O’Shea, Kieran Lucy and Patrick Clifford on top in midfield and the forward line of Fionan O’Sullivan, Fintan Kennedy and Killian Spillane a constant danger and it seemed just a matter of how many Inter would score. However, again chances weren’t taken and Ballyheigue posed more of threat and the back line of Alan Murphy Reeve, Paudie O’Sullivan, David Crowley and Sean Sheehy were busier. With ten minutes to go Inter seemed more than capable of completing the task and even adding to the score line when another punt forward from Ballyheigue was caught by keeper Ray O’Shea who, blinded by the sun, had caught the ball outside the box. Considering Inter had Paudie O’Sullivan racing into the box as cover, in typical style, the referee’s decision to send Ray off was harsh in the extreme. Fionan O’Sullivan donned the keepers gloves and pulled off a brilliant save from the resultant free kick. Ballyheigue’s tails were up and they were flooding forward and got their goal. But with ten men and in desperate need of a winner Inter drove forward and nearly scored when the indefatigable Joshua Holland almost converted from a corner. Ballyheigue grabbed a winner with the last kick of the game after Inter had sent their keeper up for a corner. Inter U16 Squad 2011/12: Ray O'Shea, Alan Murphy Reeve, Sean Sheehy, Conor Murphy, Joshua Holland, Dara O'Shea, Bryan O'Shea, Fintan Kennedy, Killian Spillane, Paudie O'Sullivan, Diarmuid Quill, David Crowley, Patrick Clifford, Fionan O'Sullivan, David Cremin, Mark Hickey, Darrol Teahan, Matthew Murnane, Pat Spillane, Dylan Spillane, Kieran Lucey, Jordan Whyte, Liam Rawson. Look out next month for a feature on this excellent squad’s journey from Under 11 in 2007 to this under 16 final.
