Pérez, Jr.) My dissertation examines the organization of business leaders in voluntary associations to collaborate and compete within urban centers across Cuba. Businessmen on the island commonly used the local Rotary Club to create networks among themselves and to advance collective interests, at both local and national levels. From the crash of the sugar market in 1920, and contrary to what the historiography has established, these businessmen became increasingly disaffected with large U.S. corporate interests, rejected the continued foreign penetration of the economy, and were concerned with what they viewed as the ruin of the country at the expense of American business interests. Business leaders were not opposed to the continuation of the cash crop export economy, but they supported any alternative economic development that would find solutions to the socioeconomic challenges produced by that variant of capitalism. I argue that Cuban business leaders created a network within civic associations to promote capitalist alternatives away from the sugar industry and the foreign control of the economy. Although they were unable to fully challenge US business interests in the island, these businessmen established reform roadmaps for gradual change and envisioned the economic independence for the country within the margins of capitalism. Capitalist alternatives were centered on encouraging a civic nationalism to protect the national interest, promoting economic diversification to reduce the reliance on the sugar production, expanding the nation’s trading networks beyond the markets of the northern neighbor, investing in regional infrastructures to iii boost business growth and internal consumption, and reaching an economic development that mirrored industrialized nations. These business leaders sought to solve the two major economic problems affecting the nation: sugar monoculture and the overconcentration of the nation’s export into a single market, the United States. Cuban republican order lasted for almost six decades 1902-1958, but this investigation focuses on 1920-1940. The selected periodization covers from the crash of the sugar market in 1920 to the promulgation of the last republican constitution in 1940. Within these years, Cuban businessmen created a nationalist network and platform from which to articulate their aspirations for economic change attired with the raiment of civic virtue. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The completion of this dissertation was made possible by the support of many people. By the late 1940's, Rotary International was already one of the largest "international" organizations in the world. There were more that 6,800 clubs in more than 81 countries. More importantly, Rotary was already working on projects around the world to diminish the causes of war and aggression. The Rotary Club of New York (which I have joined in 1983), as many other Rotary Clubs, has played an essential role in building support during the formative years of the United Nations and selecting New York City (instead of London) for the permanent Headquarters.

    D — JULIO LOBO — 1898 – 1983 JULIO LOBO (1898 — 1983) as a powerful Cuban sugar trader and financier. He was the W richest man in pre-revolutionary Cuba and the last of the island’s haute bourgeoisie. Julio Lobo remains emblematic of a certain way of life that came to an abrupt end when Fidel Castro marched into Havana. Known in his day as the King of Sugar, Lobo was, from the late 1930s to 1960, the most powerful force in the world sugar market, controlling vast swathes of the island’s sugar interests. At the start of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Lobo’s fortune was estimated at close to $200 million. His assets included 14 sugar mills, over 300,000 acres of land, a bank, an insurance company, and offices in Havana, New York, London, Madrid, and Manila. Born in 1898, the year of Cuba’s independence, Lobo’s extraordinary life mirrors the many rises and final fall of the troubled Cuban republic. The details of Lobo’s life are fit for Hollywood. He twice cornered the international sugar market and had the largest collection of Napoleonica outside of France, including the emperor’s back teeth and death mask. Today, the collection is housed in Havana at the Museo Napoleonico. He once faced a firing squad only to be pardoned at the last moment and later survived a gangland shooting. He courted movie stars from Bette Davis to Joan Fontaine and, when Esther Williams came to visit, he filled the swimming pool at his sprawling estate with perfume. Such are the legends of which revolutions are made, and later justified.

    The Birth of District 345 Rotary International China, Hong Kong and Macao by Herbert K. Lau (劉敬恒) (Rotary China Historian) 1 July 2015 “Non-districted clubs in China, Hong Kong (Crown Colony) and Macao have been constituted into a new district, No. 345.” -- This is quoted from the Annual Report 1959-1960 by the Rotary International General Secretary George R. Means. Hence, on 1 July 1960, the number of districts in the Rotary World increased to 267 as a result of the decision. This was 55 years ago. The above statement could only be so concise to describe the District within a very long report of several dozens of items in 70 pages. The more precise description as administered by the first District 345 Governor would be like this: “The code No. 345 is allocated to a new group of 19 Rotary clubs with – 14 clubs located in the Taiwan Province of the Republic of China, 4 clubs in the British Crown Colony Hong Kong, and 1 club in the Portuguese Territory Macao.” The old rule in those years, to be qualified to form one District the minimum number of clubs was 15. Practically speaking, geographically, these 19 clubs were spread on both rims of the Taiwan Strait -- 5 clubs of Hong Kong and Macao on the west while the other 14 clubs on the east. Development on the Western Rim – Hong Kong and Macao Within these 19 clubs mentioned above, Hong Kong Rotary Club (香港扶輪社) was the eldest. So, the story is better to begin with this Club. When the Rotary Club of Hong Kong was admitted to Rotary International on 20 February 1931, it was a non-districted Club.

    ROTARY HISTORY OF THE GREATER PITTSBURGH AREA, DISTRICT 7300 July 2011 As are all Rotary Clubs worldwide, District 7300 is a direct descendant of the first Rotary Club organized in the city of Chicago on February 23, 1905, by Paul P. Harris, a young lawyer. Within the following five years, twenty Rotary Clubs had their beginnings in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh and other cities in the United States. Pittsburgh, the first Rotary club in the present District 7300, was organized on December 2, 1910 as the twentieth Rotary Club. In that same year, the International Association of Rotary Clubs, now known as Rotary International, was formed. The nucleus of Rotary International was the early Rotary Clubs in the United States, Canada, England and Ireland. All Rotary Clubs were initially administered as one unit. However, in 1912, the Clubs were divided into six divisions, each administered by an Association Vice President. Pittsburgh Rotary Club was in the Eastern Division and was joined in 1913 by the McKeesport Rotary Club. Oscar T. Taylor served as the first president of the Pittsburgh Rotary Club and presided at its first meeting, which was attended by Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris. Mr. Taylor was a friend of Chesley Perry, first Rotary International Secretary. Soon thereafter, Rotary Districts were created for administrative purposes. Pittsburgh, McKeesport, Washington and Wilkes Barre were placed in District 3. Steward C. McFarland of Pittsburgh served as District Governor in 1916-1917. Many new Rotary Clubs were formed during this period which saw the area become part of District 6 with Edwin C.

    The Power of Rotary You and I belong to one of the most powerful organizations in the World. When we wear this symbol, we are telling the World that we are human beings who place “Service Above Self” and live with integrity in our daily lives. We need to truly understand that with the power we have through Rotary comes a kind of potential that carries tremendous responsibility. We are powerful because we have strength in our numbers – 1.2m Rotarians and growing. We operate in over 200 countries and principalities in the world. We are structured and organized around 532 Districts and almost 33,000 clubs. We have a network of volunteer man and now woman power all over the world, enabling us to accomplish more than almost all other volunteer organizations. We have made a difference in the lives of countless individuals, particularly children as we have all but eliminated a most dreadful disease that affects mostly children. We have immunized countless children against other preventable childhood diseases, as well. A conservative estimate is that over the past ten years alone Rotary has directly affected the lives of 20 to 30 million people. Then consider the ripple effect of two billion children having been immunized against polio. Think about that – we are 1.2 million strong out of a world population of 6 billion and we have protected one/third of the world’s population against childhood diseases. We have won the respect of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, countless governments throughout the world, and now, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

This study will also show that quixotic idealism and benevolence fueled his desire to collect books and art primarily for the well being of the Cuban people.
