Linda Roggow is a social worker at a school in Windom, Minnesota. She just got back from volunteering at the Smile Clinic Too at the Anglican Holy Cross School. She is pictured above reading a copy of The San Pedro Sun alongside some of her students. She states, “I had many wonderful things to share with the students here in Minnesota about your lovely island and won- derful people who touched our lives. Enjoy the warmth of the sunshine as we shiver up here in Minnesota!” Photos taken in unique and unusual places are preferred. Be sure to identify who is in the photo and where the photo was taken. It is exotic, full of robust, tropical flavors, a unique blend of native , and incorporates fresh ingredients found locally. Marrying them together creates a symphony of flavors that please the palate, tempting one to try even more, and opening a world of sensations and culture. The San Pedro Sun is often privy to the newest restaurant offerings, and it is a task we do not take lightly. The question of how hard our job is often comes up when we’re faced with delightful , tasty drinks and unsurpassed service. The an- swer lies somewhere between the first bite and dessert. Not hard at all! This week’s foray into Belize cuisine came via two similar, yet completely dif- ferent hot spots. Nautica Seafood Grill & Bar and Mermaid’s Sushi & Martini Bar are both located inside Fido’s Courtyard. They offer the very best of seafood, on two distinctly different menus. And we were happy to sample a bit of both. Mermaid Sushi & Martini Bar

Items are distinguished into categories like Nigiri, Nori Maki Rolls, Hand Rolled Cones, California Rolls, Hot & Spicy Rolls, Tempura and Specialty Rolls. The Red Rock Reef and the ubiquitous California Rolls comfortably nestle alongside Sea- weed Salad, Miso Soup, and Sashimi. Our delightful dinner was comprised of several different rolls, including the Mermaid Roll, Pork Dumplings/ Potstickers, Kamikaze and a personal favorite, Red Rock Reef. The Mermaid Roll was a smooth, delicious bite filled with scallop, avocado, Japanese mayo, flying fish egg, lettuce and scallion; there were a lot of flavors that blended so Continued on Page 10

Language can link us with other cultures, no matter how foreign the tongue may be. In an effort to share this form of com- munication with our audience, The San Pedro Sun proudly presents – Words of the Week. This week, we will present a couple of words in Creole, and translate it to English, using the Creole/ English Dictionary re- leased through the Kriol Council. Special thanks to Sylvana Woods for our copy of the dictionary. Enjoy!!! Funny foni Frighten fraitin Funny foni – Chaali joak dehn mi soh foni dat wi laaf til wi beli hat wi. We’re equally happy to give the drink a try (hard job and such) and the smooth, mellow tropical flavors that hit us certainly give us that magical feeling! The night is off to a great start at that rate, and we have a feeling it can only get better. And we’re right. Our lovely waitress Martha comes over with a basket filled a very interesting version of crostini. Nancy later tells us how she ex- perimented with a variety of in- gredients in search of a perfect starter. What she came up with was quite unique and oh-so- Belizean!
