CALL FOR PAPERS MLADA-MSHA International Network CLARE-ARTES Research Center (Bordeaux) Organize an international symposium оn 21-22-23 October, 2015 At Bordeaux Grand Theatre FROM BORDEAUX TO SAINT PETERSBURG, MARIUS PETIPA (1818-1910) AND THE « RUSSIAN » BALLET The great academic ballet, known as « Russian ballet », is the product of a historical process initiated in 18th century in Russia and completed in the second part of 19th century by Victor-Marius-Alphonse Petipa (1818-1910), principal ballet master of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Theatres from 1869 to his death. Born in Marseilles in a family of dancers and actors, Marius Petipa, after short- term contracts in several theatres, including Bordeaux Grand Theatre, pursued a more than 50 years long carreer in Russia, when he became « Marius Ivanovitch ». He layed down the rules of the great academic ballet and left for posterity over 60 creations, among which the most famous are still presented on stages all around the world. Petipa’s name has become a synonym of classical ballet. His work has been denigrated, parodied, or reinterpreted ; however, its meaning remains central in the reflection of contemporary choreographers, as we can see from young South African choreographer Dada Masilo’s recent new version of Swan Lake. Moreover, Petipa’s work still fosters controversies as evidenced by the reconstructions of his ballets by S.G. Vikharev at the Mariinsky theatre or Teatro alla Scala, and by Iu. P. Burlaka at the Bolchoï. Given the world-famous name of Petitpa one might expect his œuvre, as a common set of fundamental values for international choreographic culture, to be widely known. -

The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. Academic Ballet: a National and Transnational Perspective
Dr. Svebor Sečak Assistant Professor, AMEU ACADEMIC BALLET: A NATIONAL AND TRANSNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE ABSTRACT Drawing on historical perspectives, the paper follows the main diachronic line of world ballet history, and from a broad perspective focuses on Slovenia and the concept of national ensembles that were dominant in 20th-century Europe. A real challenge for national companies emerges at the turn of the century, when national companies increasingly become transnational. The repertoire becomes eclectic, and the new readings of canonical works are susceptible to the concept of intertextuality, hybridisation of genres and co-mixing of cultural influences. The academic, scientific approach has a significant role in following this vivid and vibrant process in ballet art. It studies dance art from numerous analytical perspectives that sur- pass the acquiring of technical dancing skills and the factual history of dance but rather involve semiotics, anthropological, philosophical, psychoanalytical, socio-political and feminist and gender perspectives, as well as kinesiology, anatomy and physiology in the context of safe practice. In the previous academic year, Slovenia acquired its dance academy which offers studying and teaching of ballet on an entirely new lev- el. It produces not only future professionals, but indirectly facilitates the education of a wider population relating to the significance of dance for the culture of the 21st century. It will potentially secure a double result: the preservation of the autochthonic culture and tradition and the opening up to new tendencies and philosophies as an integrative factor within Europe and worldwide. IPOSTASES OF THE CHOREOGRAPHIC DIALOGUE 153 Cristina Todi Abstract: The analysis of the aesthetic face of dance brings to our forefront the fascination for the movement on many artists who experienced the movement and, above all, explored the possibilities of kinetic art or movement movement. In its most elevated form, dance contains not only this element but also the infinite richness of human personality. It is the perfect synthesis of the abstract and the human, of mind and intellect with emotion, discipline with spontaneity, spirituality with erotic attraction to which dance aspires; and in dance as a form of communication, it is the most vivid presentation of this fusion act that is the ideal show. Key words: Arts, ballet, dance, dialogue, aesthetic 1. Introduction The Evolution of the Syncretic Dialogue between Choreography, Theatre, Music, Literature and Visual Arts We shall initiate an approach of the discourse regarding the historical evolution of choregraphic dialogue, even from the age when this artistic genre started to assume clear contours, rather from the 17th century. Without excluding the importance of the previous periods in history, the 17th and the 18th centuries are considered to be the starting points of dance for amusement. This was often dedicated to ceremonies or entertainment. In approaching these moments, the increased attention towards the aesthetic expression and the manner in which beauty was intensified, sometimes even at the expense of the real, is notable. Moreover, the technicality under which theatrical ballet was formulated in its demonstrative forms, full of technical charge, although arid in ideas or expression that reach the sensitive cords of the viewer. -
Anna Pavlova
READ and EXPLAIN Anna Pavlova Anna Pavlova was born in Russia in 1881. Her love of ballet began at a very early age and when she was 10 years old she entered the Imperial Ballet School in St Petersburg. She eventually became the main dancer for the company. In 1911, she set up her own company, becoming the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world. She was most recognised for creating the role ‘The Dying Swan’, which she performed over 4,000 times. It’s a four minute long ballet choreographed specifically for her in 1905 and is part of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. In 1912 Pavlova moved to London, which became her home until her death in 1931. It was in 1927 that she performed at the Hippodrome in one of her lightning tours of Britain – travelling 4,000 miles in ten weeks from Aberdeen to Plymouth1. Her itinerary for the second week in November was Monday: Newcastle, Tuesday: Middleborough, Wednesday: West Hartlepool, Thursday: Darlington, Friday: York and Scarborough, and Saturday: Hull. Her own death, like Pepi’s, is tinged with pathos. At the age of 49, after another arduous tour, she took a much-needed Christmas holiday abroad. Afterwards, she was to start another tour, beginning at The Hague in Holland. However, the train there was involved in an accident and she was left waiting for nearly 12 hours on a snowy evening, apparently wearing only thin clothes. When she eventually arrived at The Hague, Pavlova developed pneumonia, which quickly worsened. The story goes that doctors told her she needed an operation and that she wouldn’t be able to continue dancing afterwards. -

But this was a new kind of dance that told a story in movement and pantomime, and over the years, it has become a very highly developed and exciting art form. The more you know about ballet, the more you can enjoy it. It helps to know how finished ballet productions depend on the cooperative efforts of many people — producers, musicians, choreographers, ballet masters, scene designers — in addition to the dancers. It helps to know that ballet is based on a few basic steps and movements with many possible variations. And it helps to know that great individual effort is required to become a successful dancer. Yet one sees that in ballet, too, success has its deep and personal satisfactions. In ballet, the teacher is very important. New ideas and improvements have been introduced by many great ballet teachers. And as you will read here, "A great teacher is like a candle from which many other candles can be lit — so many, in fact, that the whole world can be made brighter." The How and Why Wonder Book of Ballet is itself a teacher, and it will make the world brighter because it throws light on an exciting art form which, year by year, is becoming a more intimate and accepted part of the American scene.
