MC Public Library Announces Fall Writing Out Loud Series

The Michigan City Public Library announces their lineup for the 23rd season of Writing Out Loud. The series began in 1984 as a grant from the Indiana Humanities Council. Since then, the program has become a community event, which draws serious writers from around the country. This year’s lineup features Chi- cago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg, young adult writers, James Cross Giblin and Lois Ruby, and architecture historian, Robert Bruegmann. Programs are all held at the Michigan City Public Library. The Friends of the Library host a reception immediately following each program. The Bookstore at Lighthouse Place will also have books for sale by each author.

DON’T MISS THE DEADLINE TO FILE YOUR PROPERTY TAX APPEAL To Our Neighbors in Sheridan Beach, Michiana Shores ,Long Beach and Duneland Beach, your 2006 pay 2007 property taxes are expected to increase again. Your bill should be out shortly. You only have 45 days after the property tax bills are mailed to Appeal your tax bill. Remember, if your tax bill is sent directly to your mortgage company there is a very good chance you will miss the timeframe in which to appeal. In a guise to save the taxpayer money, the LaPorte County Assessor did not mail residential property owners their notice of reassessment (Form 11). All beach area homeowners should exercise their rights to insure beach area taxes are correct. We suggest homeowners consider the following: 1. Review your Property Tax Card You can get a copy of your property tax card from the Michigan Township Assessor located at 302 West 8th Street in Michigan City. The tax card will list what you are being assessed on. Review this card for accuracy. 2. File an Appeal Please note that if you do not Appeal your property taxes, you may be barred from any corrections that may occur to beach area tax bills. You need to fi le an Appeal to keep the tax year open. Some of the reasons taxpayers should fi le an Appeal are: (1) There is an error(s) on the property tax card. (2) The taxpayer disagrees with the assessed value of the property. (3) The taxpayer believes for whatever reason their tax bill is incorrect. (This reason could be “Appealing tax bill to determine whether the Assessor’s procedures, process and calculations are fair, equitable and correct.” Please be aware that if the property is under Appeal, the County allows the taxpayer to pay what he paid last year in tax for this year until the Appeal is resolved. This is a tremendous incentive to fi le your appeal. If your property tax bill increases as we expect it will, this allows you to hold the difference until your appeal is resolved. You will not be afforded this courtesy without an appeal on fi le. The Appeal (Form 130) can be found on our website www.citizensforfairtaxes.org. Please check the website for the date of our next public meeting to discuss the following: Tax Appeal Clinic, Updates on current legal battle, learn what assessor does not want you to know, overcome the obstacles to get a fair chance at an appeal. You can also fi le your appeal on the spot. 3. Get a Certifi ed Appraisal If you are fi ling an Appeal for anything other than an error on the property tax card, you will need to get a Certifi ed Appraisal. This will substantiate why you disagree with your assessed value and/or why you believe your tax bill is incorrect. An appraisal costs approximately $175 - $300. A list of area appraisers can be found on our website. Students are back in school and we are all won- dering where the summer went. Although summer does not really end yet, it is not too early for stu- dents to get a head start in their study skills. About the time summer does end on September 23, those in school will have had their fi rst tastes of test-tak- ing. I spent time looking over study skills websites just for that reason. I am taking a wild guess here by stating that children and teens are very unlikely to log on to such sites. I hope someone out there will prove me wrong. How to Study (www.how-to-study.com). We knew we were in for a stellar week’s worth of world-class music on opening night of the Sixth An- nual Michigan City Chamber Music Festival. As we faithful followers of Nic Orbovich’s soar- ing artistic vision settled in at the First Presbyte- rian Church on Saturday, August 11, lead-off man Rudolf Haken cradled his red fi ve-string viola and admitted that he was worried that no would like the festival opener: Igor Stravinsky’s hauntingly eerie “Elegie.” But the bicycle-riding composer and violist from the University of Illinois added that when his nine- year-old son heard him rehearsing the Stravinsky work for viola, the lad proclaimed: “Dad, that’s so cool.” And, yes, the whole entire Michigan City Cham- Soprano Melisa Barrick with her daughter Ella and husband cellist ber Music Festival, or MCCMF, was so cool -- from Wesley Baldwin following their dazzling performances on Russian Night. Mr. Haken’s opening note of Stravinsky’s “Elegie” on opening night to the last, longed-for notes of Jo- hannes Brahams’ sublime Sextet for Strings at the festival’s conclusion on Sunday, August 19. As one loyal patron said: “There aren’t enough su- perlatives to describe what we have heard here in Michigan City this week.” No, sir, there are not. No, there are not enough superlatives in Russian, American English, Italian, and German to describe what the expanded fan base heard issue forth from those golden strings, keyboard, clarinet and voices this past season. And, yes, as Sunny Gardener-Orbovich said: “It is indeed bitter-sweet when the festival ends, because one is left with lingering moments of musical magic Violist Gabriel Schlaffer with his lovely wife Machiko on opening night of the 6th annual Michigan City Chamber Music Festival. And, yes, I confess that as I am writing this appre- ciation of the musical gift that was given to me this August, I am happily listening to Rudolf Haken’s life-affi rming Concerto for Five-String Viola that he recorded on the Centaur label. The CD also contains the Clarinet Concerto he wrote for his “favorite clar- inetist in the whole world – Bill King”, and the Oboe Concerto Rudolf wrote for Bill’s internationally re- nowned wife, Nancy Ambrose King. I am listening to them all as I write this letter of gratitude to the best musicians in the universe who came to earth in Michigan City long enough to leave us longing for more next August. They made August 2007 our best August so far, and, yes, it didn’t hurt Pianist Robert Marshall Auler is Assistant Professor of Piano that the second concert happily coincided with our at the State University of New York at Oswego. 30th wedding anniversary on Monday, August 13. As Sunny said in her closing remarks before the fi nal concert on August 19: “This week has been re- ally special. We didn’t plan for number six to be a special year, but we felt the growth this year.” And, she added, everyone present helped build the festi- val into the world-class musical expression that it has become and will continue to be. And, yes, parting is such sweet sorrow, and it was truly sorrowful to hear Nic announce the departure of the individual musicians on that rainy Sunday afternoon in August at First Presbyterian Church.
