Annual Report 2016-2017 A note from our leaders

As we reflect on the past year, we are amazed by the accomplishments we achieved thanks to your support. You have fully embraced and supported the goals outlined in our 2016-21 Strategic Plan. This ambitious plan will allow CHSW to serve more children and families in Washington state than at any other time in our history. Sharon Osborne As the opioid epidemic and other challenges continue to overwhelm our families, we know CHSW is needed now more than ever. With your continued support, we are making progress toward creating our hubs in communities throughout the state that focus on all phases of a child’s life from birth to 12. As we begin to fully integrate our own programs to better serve families, we are also creating lasting community partnerships where we can connect families to outside resources that help create permanent homes for children. In fall 2017, we announced North King County will serve as the first pilot site for our hub, launching in early 2018, and Walla Walla County will become the second site in summer 2018. An important component of our hub will be the re-launch and expansion in summer 2018 of CHSW’s Adoption & Secure Families signature service, which will focus primarily on Neal F. Lessenger finding permanent homes for children in the state’s foster care system. We know many of our supporters like you are connected to our adoption history from the days of our receiving Officers homes and residential care. North King County We selected North King County as our first pilot location of the hub, with the plan to build upon the $100,000 Neighborhood Planning Grant awarded by the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation in summer 2016. This planning grant resulted in the neighborhood revitalized plan called Build Lake City Together, which highlights the importance of bringing the hub to Lake City. For our second hub location, we will move forward with implementation in Walla Walla County. To support the start of this effort, we received a two-year grant totaling $80,000 from longtime supporter Sherwood Trust to bring a family navigator to the local Walla Walla Clinic– Department of Pediatrics. Our other communities are also working toward the Walla Walla comprehensive model to fully launch in the coming years. Adoption & Secure Families In summer 2018, CHSW will re-launch and expand our Adoption & Secure Families signature service to specifically support foster children who need permanent, loving homes. The vision for our signature service is to support children and families throughout their adoption journey, from pre-adoption to placement of children in the home. One of the main elements of the Adoption & Secure Families signature service is CHSW’s statewide Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program supported by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA) since 2004. WWK focuses on specialized recruitment of adoptive families for the highest need, longest waiting children in foster care. Thanks to a partnership with the state of Washington and DTFA, CHSW will be hiring more recruiters who will support between 250 to 450 children each year. In addition to finding permanent homes for more children, the second goal of this effort is to improve the state’s foster care system.
