53 Late Medieval Central India, Tomars of Gwalior, Billon Tanka, 9.60g, crude legend on both sides. Extremely fine, extremely rare. These coins form a long series of progressively debased billon and copper Tankas and fractions thereof, which have typological links with the coins of late Delhi Sultans like the Sayyads and Lodhis. The legends they bear are very crude but sometimes show traces of recognizable words. As some such words appear to correspond to those in the genealogy of the Tomars of Gwalior (c. 15th-16th century AD) the series is tentatively attributed to them. Sold ` ...... 10 • visit www.oswalauctions.com Collection of Gentlemen The Bahamanis minted coins in Gold, Silver & Copper. The Gold coins are rare & most of the Silver coins are scarce/ rare. The initial coinage of Bahamanis was modelled on the Delhi Sultanate coinage. However later the Bahamanis adopted their own style. Bahamanis coinage is not only important in the History of Karnataka but it is very important for Indian Numismatic. This was the time the Vijaynagara Empire was established and the next two centuries saw a constant struggle for powers between these two empires. We feel proud to handle such fine collection of Bahamanis Silver coins in our past Auctions 47 & 48. This is part III of the same collection of a very senior collector.

175 Nadir Shah, Silver Rupee, 11.58g, Ahmedabad Mint, (struck during his Indian invasion) AH1152, Obv: Farsi couplet Hast SultanSalatin-i-Jahan / Shah-i-Shahan Nadir Sahib Qiran (“Nadir, the Sultan among Sultans of the World, is (also) the king of Kings and the Lord of Conjunctions”), Rev: Farsi legend Zarb Ahmedabad Sanah 1152 Khallada Allah Mulkahu. Broad flan, complete legend on both sides, extremely fine, exceedingly rare. Nadir Shah invaded India in February 1739 under the pretext that the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah did not check Afghan rebels that were giving trouble to the Iranian kingdom. The Mughal army was defeated at the Battle of Karnal on 13 February 1739 and the Iranians continued their march to capture Delhi on 20 March 1739. In a couple of days, skirmishes between the Iranian army and local soldiery led to a horrible massacre of the inhabitants of Delhi and the city was heavily plundered. To please Nadir Shah, the Mughal emperor declared him the king, read the Khutba in his name and coins were struck in his name too. Nadir finally returned to Iran in May 1739 with his loot – which was so enormous that he forfeited tax collections in Iran for the next three years! The terror struck by Nadir Shah was of such magnitude that coins were issued in his name in mints far away from the capital Delhi – such as Ahmedabad, Banaras and Murshidabad. This coin of Ahmedabad mint is a testimony to this famous historical episode. Sold ` ...... Estimate: ` 2,25,000-2,50,000

About uncirculated, extremely rare. In 1885-1886, the government of Indore appears to have experimented with a number of designs for its coinage. In all probability these variations had to do with introduction of mechanization in coin manufacture. Some of the designs must have had very short runs judging by surviving examples – the coin offered here is one such. In normal circumstances, such experimental designs would be classified as 'patterns', but in most cases the Indore government appears to have actually released the coins in circulation as indicated by their condition.
