This was the Bulldog's 5th consecutive bowl 13 victory and second consecutive under Coach Mullen. Never mind 14 that the Bulldogs finished 7-6 in a season that started with a top 15 25. State was all smiles afterward, its players slapping hands 16 with fans in the end zone and the team gathering to sing the Alma 17 Mater; and 18 WHEREAS, Mississippi State brought a large majority of the 19 crowd, some 30,000, who rang their cowbells on a relatively mild 20 night for late December. "I told you we would paint the town 21 maroon tonight," Coach Mullen said; and 22 WHEREAS, Mississippi State won in large part due to a pair of 23 long touchdown runs by Vick Ballard, who was playing in his final 24 collegiate game. Ballard scored on a 60-yard run in the first 25 quarter and a 72-yard run in the fourth quarter, the latter of 26 which helped space out the lead. Ballard ran for a career-high 27 180 yards on 14 carries, second-most by a Mississippi State player 28 in a bowl; and S. C. R. No. 508 *SS02/R461* N1/2 12/SS02/R461 PAGE 1 29 WHEREAS, quarterback Chris Reif started for the Bulldogs and 30 played the whole game. Reif ran for 64 yards and threw for 129 31 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions; and 32 WHEREAS, Mississippi State entered the bowl game with 33 33 consecutive wins when it was leading after the third quarter. The 34 Bulldogs' 34th win was secured on Ballard's 72-yard score and two 35 failed Wake Forest fourth down conversions in the final minutes. 36 "It's big for the team and for Mississippi State University, 37 because we go out with a winning season and won a great bowl 38 game," Ballard said; and 39 Whereas, MSU's star defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, a 40 first-team All-SEC selection, is projected by many NFL analysts as 41 a first-round selection in this year's pro draft. As one of the 42 great defensive linemen in the SEC, Fletcher finished the season 43 with 14 1/2 tackles for loss, including five sacks, and two 44 blocked field goals in 2011. If Fletcher Cox is selected in the 45 first round as projected in 2011, MSU will have first-round 46 selections in consecutive years (Derek Sherrod in 2012) for the 47 first time since 1982-1983 (Glen Collins/Johnie Cooks); and 48 WHEREAS, the Bulldogs have capitalized off the field, too, 49 using the football momentum to sell out 16 consecutive home games, 50 create a waiting list for season tickets and draw up plans to 51 expand their home stadium; and 52 WHEREAS, the 2011 Bulldog roster is: Chad Bumphis, WR; 53 Robert Elliott, RB; Brandon Heavens, WR; Charles Mitchell, DB; 54 Nickoe Whitley, DB; Dylan Favre, QB; Wade Bonner, DB; Chris Smith, 55 WR; Brandon Maye, LB; Cameron Lawrence, LB; Ricco Sanders, WR; 56 Chris Hughes, LB; Jonathan Banks, DB; Chris Relf, QB; Dak 57 Prescott, QB; Jameon Lewis, WR; Tyler Russell, QB; Brandon Hill, 58 TE; Arceto Clark, WR; Louis Watson, DB; Matthew Wells, LB; 59 Sylvester Hemphill, FB; Jamerson Love, DB; Corey Broomfield, DB; 60 Damein Anderson, DB; LaDarius Perkins, RB; Vick Ballard, RB; Nick 61 Griffin, RB; Jay Hughes, DB; Sam Williams, WR; Marcus Green, TE; S. 2008 Florida Football Post-Game Notes Florida vs. LSU October 11, 2008 Florida is now a perfect 5-0 at home against ranked opponents under head coach Urban Meyer. Coach Meyer is 4-1 all-time versus top-five opponents while at Florida and he improved to 14-5 all-time against ranked opponents (12-5 at UF). He has led the Gatorsto wins over six of the last eight ranked opponents and 11 of the last 14. The Plan to Win The following four items outline Coach Meyer’s Plan to Win: Play Great Defense Counting LSU’s touchdown at the end of the second stanza, the Gators have only given up 17 points to their six opponents in the first half. LSU tailbacks had 385 consecutive carries without a fumble before Christopher Scott fumbled with 9:46 to play in the first half. The Gators held running back Charles Scott to only 17 yards, marking the first time this season he has not rushed for 100 yards. Turnovers UF recovered one fumble and caught two interceptions for a +2 turnover margin in the game. The Gators have a +10 in turnover margin this year. Florida already has more interception return yards this year (199) than all of last season (104). The total is already a season high under head coach Urban Meyer. Score in the Red Zone UF has scored on 23-of-24 trips inside the red zone this season and has been perfect in five (6-of-6 today) of six games. The one time UF did not score was at the end of the Tennessee game, when the Gators ran on fourth and nine from the UT 12-yard line.
