Resum El crani de Sylviornismostra una articulació craniarostral completament mòbil, amb dos còndils articulars situats sobre el rostrum, el qual s'insereix al crani en dues superfícies articulars allargades. La presència de dos procesos rostropterigoideus sobre el basisfenoide del rostrum i la forma dels palatins permet confirmar que aquest gènere pertany als Galliformes, però les característiques altament derivades del crani justifiquen el seu emplaçament a una nova família, extingida, Sylviornithidae. El crani de Syluiornis està extremadament eixamplat i dorsoventralment aplanat, mentre que el rostrum és massís, lateralment comprimit, dorsoventralment aixecat i mostra unes cristae tomiales molt fondes. El rostrum exhibeix un ornament ossi gran. La mandíbula mostra una símfisi molt allargada, les branques laterals també presenten unes cristae tomiales fondes, i la part posterior de la mandíbula és molt gruixada. Worthy,2,5 Stuart Hawkins,3 Stuart Bedford,4 and Matthew Spriggs 4 Abstract: The avifauna of the Teouma archaeological site on Efate in Vanuatu is described. It derives from the Lapita levels (3,000 – 2,800 ybp) and immedi- ately overlying middens extending to ~2,500 ybp. A total of 30 bird species is represented in the 1,714 identified specimens. Twelve species are new records for the island, which, added to previous records, indicates that minimally 39 land birds exclusive of passerines were in the original avifauna. Three-fourths of the 12 newly recorded species appear to have become extinct by the end of Lapita times, 2,800 ybp. The avifauna is dominated by eight species of columbids (47.5% Minimum Number Individuals [MNI ]) including a large extinct tooth- billed pigeon, Didunculus placopedetes from Tonga, and a giant Ducula sp. -

Steadman1 Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Bartow County, Georgia, has produced late Quaternary fossils of 38 taxa of birds. The presence of extinct species of mammals, and three radiocarbon dates on mammalian bone collagen ranging from approximately 15,000 to 12,000 Cal B.P., indicate a late Pleistocene age for this fauna, although a small portion of the fossils may be Holocene in age. The birds are dominated by forest or woodland species, especially the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) and Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius). Species indicative of brushy or edge habitats, wetlands, and grasslands also are present. They include the Greater Prairie Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido, a grassland indicator) and Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica, characteristic of woody edges bordering grasslands). Both of these species reside today no closer than 1000+ km to the west (mainly northwest) of Georgia. An enigmatic owl, perhaps extinct and undescribed, is represented by two juvenile tarsometatarsi. The avifauna of Kingston Saltpeter Cave suggests that deciduous or mixed deciduous/coniferous forests and woodlands were the dominant habitats in the late Pleistocene of southernmost Appalachia, with wetlands and grasslands present as well. Here, we quantified insular extinctions of frugivorous vertebrates (including birds, mammals and reptiles) across 74 tropical and subtropical oceanic islands within 20 archipelagos worldwide and investigated extinction in relation to island characteristics (island area, isolation, elevation and climate) and species’ functional traits (body mass, diet and ability to fly). Out of the 74 islands, 33 islands (45%) have records of frugivore extinctions, with one third (mean: 34%, range: 2–100%) of the pre‐extinction frugivore community being lost. Geographic areas with more than 50% loss of pre‐extinction species richness include islands in the Pacific (within Hawaii, Cook Islands and Tonga Islands) and the Indian Ocean (Mascarenes, Seychelles). The proportion of species richness lost from original pre‐extinction communities is highest on small and isolated islands, increases with island elevation, but is unrelated to temperature or precipitation. Large and flightless species had higher extinction probability than small or volant species. Across islands with extinction events, a pronounced downsizing of the frugivore community is observed, with a strong extinction‐driven reduction of mean body mass (mean: 37%, range: –18–100%) and maximum body mass (mean: 51%, range: 0–100%). -

While adding to the rapidly growing known Liushu avian fauna of vultures, falcons, pheasants, and ostrich, this new fossil is likely the oldest record of crown Pteroclidae (as a potential molecular clock calibration point), the oldest record of the group in Asia (from a probable African Edited by: origin), and derives from a significant temporal gap in their Neogene history. Flamingo Bulletin of the IUCN-SSC/Wetlands International FLAMINGO SPECIALIST GROUP Number 15, December 2007 ISSN 1680-1857 ABOUT THE GROUP The Flamingo Specialist Group (FSG) was established in 1978 at Tour du Valat in France, under the leadership of Dr. Alan Johnson, who coordinated the group until 2004. Currently, the group is coordinated from the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, UK, as part of the IUCN-SSC/Wetlands International Waterbird Network. The FSG is a global network of flamingo specialists (both scientists and non- scientists) involved in the study, monitoring, management and conservation of the world’s six flamingo species populations. Its role is to actively promote flamingo research and conservation worldwide by encouraging information exchange and cooperation among these specialists, and with other relevant organisations, particularly IUCN - SSC, Wetlands International, Ramsar, Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species, African Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement, and BirdLife International. FSG members include experts in both in-situ (wild) and ex-situ (captive) flamingo conservation, as well as in fields ranging from field surveys to breeding biology, infectious diseases, toxicology, movement tracking and data management. There are currently 208 members around the world, from India to Chile, and from Finland to South Africa. After their different trends in island evolution, the Strigiformes can be seen as a representative of insular adaptations of birds as a whole. In fact they respond quickly to isolation with deep changes in body size, including dwarfism and gigantism, and allometric variations, such as reduction of wings, lengthening of hindlimbs and strengthening of digits and claws. The only exception is the loss of the ability to fly, which has never been recorded in Strigiformes. In this paper I report on all the endemic owls found in Mediterranean Islands, both living and fossil, in order to emphasize trends in insular evolution and the relationships between the different species sharing a certain island. The description of Aegolius martae n. sp. completes the guild of endemic Strigiformes of the early Middle Pleistocene of Sicily and allows to use Sicily as the best example of a biogeographical island type with intermediate characteristics between the oceanic and the continental ones, with the presence of some non-flying mammals, but the lack of terrestrial carnivores. -

Storer* Abstract The notarium, a group of fused thoracic vertebrae, is characteristic of birds of five orders and is found in one or more families of five more orders of non-passerine birds . Sixteen patterns of variation in the number of vertebrae in the notarium and of unfused vertebrae between it and the synsacrum were found. The occurrence of these patterns in the groups having a notarium is tabulated. Selective factors favoring the evolution of fusion of these vertebrae may have included the shock induced by landing on hard substrates or of striking prey and the prevention of downward bending of the ends of the thoracic portion of vertebral column while the birds are in flight. Phylogenetic implications of the presence of a notarium in several groups are discussed. The notarium of Os dorsale of birds is a group of fused thoracic vertebrae usually separated by one or more unfused vertebrae from the anteriormost vertebra of the synsacrum (Baumel 1979: 93, 112). Although it was described and figured as early as 1856 (Barkow 1856: pl. II), I have found little more than casual mention of it in the literature. It therefore seems worthwhile to survey the distribution of this structure among the orders and families of birds, to describe the variation in the numbers of vertebrae in the notarium and between it and the synsacrum, to speculate on its possible adaptive significance, and to discuss phylogenetic implications of its presence.
