Dan I wish ye all the best, lads. Fethiere - Coach Shane ‘80 Dan played three years of rugby at Fordham Prep and continued to play for four Shane McDermott years at Fordham University, while earning a BS in Psychology in 1984. Prior to entering Fordham University, Dan attended US Army Basic Training. He was PG Drywall commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1982 and remained an as an Army reservist for 88 Main Street his two remaining years at the University. Tuckahoe, NY Dan was on active duty in the army from 1984 through 1993, serving as an infantry officer with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft Campbell, KY. He 914-815-2678 attended U. S. Army Special Forces Assessment and Selection 1988, and accepted, then attended, the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1988. From 1990-1993, Dan was assigned to 5th Special Forces Group, Ft Campbell, KY and deployed to Saudi Arabia/Kuwait in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm as the Detachment Commander of Operational Detachment - Alpha (ODA) 522. He conducted numerous additional Middle Eastern deployments in support of US national objectives. Military schools he completed include Infantry Officers Basic and Advance Courses, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Ranger School, SERE School, Arabic Language School, and the Special Forces Detachment Officers Qualification Course. Congratulations to Dan, Simon & Ralph! Throughout his storied career in the military, Dan also found time to play rugby. As a scrum half on the Ft. Campbell Rugby Club, he was selected to the All Army As a former player ('77 & '78), I'm happy to Rugby Team in 1987, when they won the Inter-Service Championship Trophy, and toured England as part of the Combined Service Team in 1988. support the FP Rugby Program.

In 1995 Dan attended the FBI Special Agent Academy and was posted to the NY Division in that same year. He served 22 years as a Special Agent conducting numerous drug and organized crime investigations. He was selected as a SWAT operator and spent 15 years on the NY Office SWAT Team, with 4 1/2 years as the Senior Team Leader, conducting numerous high-risk, tactical operations, including Gene Lanza '78 and Tamara Lanza several deployments to the Republic of Yemen in support of the USS Cole bombing The Lanza Insurance Agency investigation. He was again deployed in 2004 and 2006 to Afghanistan as an FBI Harrison, NY agent attached to the 7th Special Forces Group, conducting direct action/site exploitation operations in support of the Global War on Terrorism. 914-835-6000 Thankfully, Dan is home safe and sound and enjoying his retirement brewing beer. www.lanzainsurance.com Dan and his wife, Becky have one son, Daniel, who is an Infantry Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Honoree Simon Walsh ‘83

Simon played rugby and football all four years at the Prep. At Yale he was a bench-warmer on the football team for three years before resuming rugby his last year, again as a flanker. After college he played for Old Blue Rugby Football Club in City and Washington Rugby Football Club in Washington, D.C.

He is currently Chief Operating Officer for New York Life's Retail Annuities business.

He remembers with pride the shouts of joy at the final whistle, on a sunny spring day in 1983, when the Prep took the field in Gaelic Park and beat a stacked Xavier side.

Simon and his wife, Jane, have two sons, Mahon and Declan.

Simon is honored and humbled to share this night with such remarkable honorees, Dan Fethiere and Ralph Dengler, two men who have built remarkable careers, and repeatedly put themselves in harm’s way in the service of others. Honoree Ralph Dengler ‘84

Ralph A. Dengler is the son of Norbert (FP ’49) and Marilyn Dengler and the middle of seven children raised in . Ralph attended Fordham Prep from 1980-1984, where he played football for four years and was first introduced to rugby. He played prop from sophomore year through senior year.

After graduating from the Prep, Ralph entered the United States Naval Academy in July 1984, where he played rugby for four years and was the team captain in his senior year. Ralph’s Navy Rugby Football Club won the Potomac Rugby Union Championship in 1988 and Ralph was chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Forward. He also was selected to the All Military U-19 Team, and was a light heavyweight boxing champion as a senior.

Ralph majored in General Engineering and upon graduation in 1988, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served as an Infantry Officer on Active Duty from 1988-1993 and in the Reserves from 2003-2010, commanding Platoon through Battalion sized Infantry units (and teaching “combat rugby” to his Platoons).

Ralph served three combat tours over his Marine Corps career, in the Gulf War in 1991 and in the Iraq War in 2003 and again in 2007-2008. He retired as a Colonel in 2010.

Along the way, Ralph attended Fordham University Law School from 1993- 1996. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, and then went into private practice where he has been specializing in Intellectual Property law litigation and counseling for nearly 20 years. Ralph is a Partner at Venable LLP in Manhattan.

He is married to Kelly Connaghan Dengler, who was a Hall of Fame swimmer at Fordham University. Ralph and Kelly are the proud parents of student/athletes: Matt (18), a freshman at Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business and a member of the football team; Ryan (17), a junior at Pope John High School and also a member of the football team; Krista (12), a 7th grader at Sparta Middle School and a soccer and basketball player; and Sloane (10), a 5th grader at Helen Morgan School and also a soccer and basketball player.
