CATHOLIC DIRECTORY u* OF INDIA, fa><i %ta H / 3 U '« T; C S 'iL C h f , 1923 73rd ANNUAL ISSUE OF THE MADRAS CATHOLIC DIRECTORY AND ANNUAL GENERAL REGISTER PUBLISHED BY THE CATHOLIC SUPPLY SOCIETY, MADRAS. PRINTED AT THE “ GOOD PASTOR” PRESS, BROADWAY, MADRAS. Yal* nivfr*>v i.fbrtff New MT4 -Z CA9k y, 7 3 Nihil obstat: J. BEUKERS, Censor Deputatus. Imprimatur: KREYELMANS, v.G. Madras, 7 Octobris 1922. PREFACE. It is no easy tusk to reach perfection, though all are supposed to be on the road to perfection. One often expects from a publi cation as the Catholic Directory to be faultless, forgetting conveniently that its correctness depends on so many and such different sources. We cannot thank the Chancellors sufficiently for their readiness in providing the required information, only two dioceses, viz., Dacca and Kandy, having failed to forward the Gazetteer. It has been said more than once that those in the New World and the Old who work for the Missions, love to study the Directory’s pages. (Vide e.g., Missiones Catholicae cura S. C. de Prop. Fide , descriptae.) During the year just closed the Pope of Peace and of the Missions, Benedict XV, was called to his reward. His was a short reign, but being made perfect in a short space, he fulfilled a long time. (Wisdom 4, 13.) His Holiness wrote a letter to this country prais ing it for the efforts made in connection with Marian Congress, and offering us wise coun sels. No doubt every Catholic in this vast country has offered prayers for the repose of his soul. At the present day the Apostolic See is filled by the accession of his successor Pope Pius XI. India too has sustained a loss during the. year under review in the demise of JVIgr. H. Teissier, Bishop of Mysore, but it saw another son of that great apostolic body of France, Mgr. M. Despatures, elevated to that high dignity. The two blocks published in this issue were kindly lent by “ The Angel of the Good Shepherd at Bangalore. The Diocese of Malacca chronicles the consecration of a Co-adjutor, Mgr. L. Perrichon. The Rev. C. Houpert, S.J., contributes an interesting article on the oft mooted question whether we Catholics are progressing in number, and he comes to the conclusion—the Catholic Church is never content with the number of L atholics until everybody is either baptized or has had a fair chance of being baptized—that India’s total is not hopeless. He finds a connection between the number of Priests and the number of Catholics and shows this in his tables, which cover a period of twenty years. May the near future see the number of Priests doubled, and the millions of heathens asking to be instructed. There are no substantial changes in the present Directory, only a few pages of matter riot fully up-to-date were dropped. To the Contributors and the different Chancellors the warmest thanks are offered by M a d r a s , S. w . : ) Feast of the [ THE COMPILER. Epiphany, 1923. ) C o n t e n t s .
