1. Before visiting Assam, what did the speaker learn about the state from Aunt Ratna?

Before visiting Assam the speaker had learned from Aunt Ratna that Assam is one of the most beautiful states in India. It is very rich in agriculture and Bihu is the most important festival .

2. When is Rongali bihu celebrated? What is special about this name?

Rongali bihu is the Assamese new year and is usually celebrated in the middle of April. It is called Rongali Bihu, because of the happiness it brings to people.

3. How do farmers take care of their cattle during Bihu?

During Bihu, farmers spend a whole day decorating the cattle. They bath their cows and bulls and decorate them with a few garlands.

4. How is the festival celebrated among families?

During Bihu members of families greet each other, welcome their guests and pay their respect to elders by presenting them with new 'gamosas'. Traditional sweets are also prepared by them.

5. How has the speaker described the Bihu dance? The speaker describes the Bihu dance as joyous. He loved its brisk steps and hand movements.

6. How are the two other Bihu festivals celebrated?

During the Kongali Bihu when the sowing is completed, farmers light saki or earthen lamps in the paddy ﬁeld and pray for a good crop. During the Bhogali Bihu at the end of the harvesting period there is feasting and bonﬁre.
