Since water at the sur­ face is generally warmer and contains more oxygen, the effect of downwelling is to warm the deeper water UPWELLING and increase its oxygen content.

The major wind systems are the Trade Winds in equatorial latitudes, and the Westerly Wind Systems that drive circulation in the north and south temperate and sub-polar regions (Fig. 1). It is no surprise that major circulations of surface currents have basically the same patterns as the winds that drive them (Fig. 2). Note that the Trade Wind System drives an Equatorial Current-Countercurrent system, for example.

The water vapor condenses into clouds and results in precipitation in the form of rain and snow, which fall on the windward slope.

Nyenzi3 Introduction Research on the potential health effects of weather, climate variability and climate change requires understanding of the exposure of interest. Although often the terms weather and climate are used interchangeably, they actually represent different parts of the same spectrum. Weather is the complex and continuously changing condition of the atmosphere usually considered on a time-scale from minutes to weeks. The atmospheric variables that characterize weather include temperature, precipitation, humidity, pressure, and wind speed and direction. Climate is the average state of the atmosphere, and the associated characteristics of the underlying land or water, in a particular region over a par- ticular time-scale, usually considered over multiple years. Climate variability is the variation around the average climate, including seasonal variations as well as large-scale variations in atmospheric and ocean circulation such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Climate change operates over decades or longer time-scales. Research on the health impacts of climate variability and change aims to increase understanding of the potential risks and to identify effective adaptation options. Understanding the potential health consequences of climate change requires the development of empirical knowledge in three areas (1): 1. historical analogue studies to estimate, for specified populations, the risks of climate-sensitive diseases (including understanding the mechanism of effect) and to forecast the potential health effects of comparable exposures either in different geographical regions or in the future; 2. studies seeking early evidence of changes, in either health risk indicators or health status, occurring in response to actual climate change; 3.

    Environmental Systems The atmosphere and hydrosphere THE ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere, the gaseous layer that surrounds the earth, formed over four billion years ago. During the evolution of the solid earth, volcanic eruptions released gases into the developing atmosphere. Assuming the outgassing was similar to that of modern volcanoes, the gases released included: water vapor (H2O), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrochloric acid (HCl), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen (N2) and sulfur gases. The atmosphere was reducing because there was no free oxygen. Most of the hydrogen and helium that outgassed would have eventually escaped into outer space due to the inability of the earth's gravity to hold on to their small masses. There may have also been significant contributions of volatiles from the massive meteoritic bombardments known to have occurred early in the earth's history. The sample contains small fish and many small pieces of plastic. The Garbage Patch is primarily composed of this small plastic “confetti” suspended throughout the surface water of the North Pacific Gyre, and is not a island of trash as suggested by some media outlets. The region where the trash converges in the center of the North Pacific Gyre, in a region where surface currents are weak and convergent, thus concentrating large amounts of trash in an area estimated to be close to the size of Texas. With this slide I often show a video clip about the Garbage Patch.     Name ___________________________ Hurricane Paths: Comparing Places with Different Prevailing Winds To understand where hurricanes usually start and what direction they usually move, it helps to have a clear mental image of the pattern of prevailing winds in the world. One way to get this image is to make a careful comparison of wind observations in several places. The diagrams on the right are examples of a special kind of graph called a wind rose. The number in the center indicates the percentage of time the air is calm (no wind). Each of the eight lines radiating away from the center shows the percentage of time the wind blows FROM that direction. Repeat: The lines point to the direction the wind is blowing FROM. Please answer the following questions. 1) According to the map above, Boston has calm air about 12% of the time; the percentage of time San Juan, Puerto Rico, has calm air is _____ . 2) In San Juan, the wind blows the largest percentage of time from the northeast; in Boston, the wind blows from the _________ more often than from any other direction. 3) Use the wind rose graphs on pages 2 and 3.     CHAPTER THIRTEEN GUNNAR KARLSSON’S ALTERNATIVE THEORY: THAT HISTORICAL PLAGUE WAS PURE EPIDEMICS OF PRIMARY PNEUMONIC PLAGUE Introduction G. Karlsson presented his alternative theory to the international com- munity of scholars in a paper published in Journal of Medieval History in 1996 where he argues that two late medieval epidemics in Iceland and more generally that plague in medieval Europe were pure epidem- ics of primary pneumonic plague.1 For his epidemiological interpreta- tion, Karlsson bases his alternative theory directly on Morris’s assertion of the occurrence of pure epidemics of primary pneumonic plague, a modality of plague disease spread by interhuman cross-infection by droplets. Th e concept of a pure epidemic of primary pneumonic plague implies that the origin of the epidemic is not a case of bubonic plague which develops secondary pneumonia but a case in which the fi rst vic- tim contracted pneumonic plague directly by inhalation of infected droplets into the lungs. Karlsson’s paper follows quite closely and draws heavily on a paper he published together with S. Kjartansson in an Icelandic journal in 1994 on two supposed plague epidemics in Iceland in 1402–4 and 1494–5 respectively.2 He is clear about its objective: “Th e present article [as the fi rst in Icelandic] can be seen as a defence of the late Jón Steff ensen against Benedictow’s critique of his conclusions,” namely, that these epidemics, and also the Black Death of 1348–9 in Norway were primary pneumonic plague.3 Th us, the central feature of Karlsson’s (and Karlsson’s and Kjartansson’s) paper on the two supposed plague epidemics in fi ft eenth-century Iceland is a comprehensive and sharp criticism of my doctoral thesis (1993, repr.

INTRODUCTION Since 1942, surface analyses produced by several different offices within the U.S. Weather Bureau (USWB) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) National Weather Service (NWS) were generally based on the Norwegian Cyclone Model (Bjerknes 1919) over land, and in recent decades, the Shapiro-Keyser Model over the mid-latitudes of the ocean. The graphic below shows a typical evolution according to both models of cyclone development.
