Seymour Greenberg Seymour Greenberg is one of the most decorated tennis players in Northwestern history. He became NU’s first Big Ten singles champion in 1940 and he followed that up with another crown in 1941. Greenberg helped the Wildcats capture their second Big Ten team title in 1940 and he captained them to their third champi- onship in 1942. He also excelled in doubles, teaming with Jerry Clifford in 1940 to capture the 1940 Big Ten doubles crown, also a first for NU. On the national level, Greenberg won the 1942 and 1943 Clay Court titles. He was ranked fifth in the U.S. in singles in 1943 and 1944. Greenberg’s three doubles titles still rank first all-time in Big Ten history. He has been inducted into numerous Halls of Fame, including the Chicago Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the Chicago Tennis Hall of Fame. 5 Academic POSTSEASON AWARDS & HONORS ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN 1984 John Kamisar Spencer Wolf 1986 Dan Christian Marco Wen Andrew McCarthy Marco Wen 1985 David Kabiller Tobias Reitz, 1987 Matthew Akman Danny Weiss 2012 Sidarth Balaji 1988 Matthew Akman Marco Wen Josh Graves 1989 Gary Cohen 1986 Marco Wen Chris Jackman 1992 Marc Eisen 1987 Matthew Akman Tobias Reitz 1995 Carl von Schantz 1988 Matthew Akman Eric Spector 2007 Matt Christian Gary Cohen Spencer Wolf Marc Dwyer Brian Saltzman 2013 Sidarth Balaji 2008 David Seyferth 1989 Gary Cohen Chris Jackman 2009 Joshua Graves Pat Han Spencer Wolf Philip Kafka Steve Herdoiza 2014 Mihir Kumar Tobias Reitz 1990 Gary Cohe Raleigh Smith Eric Spector Chris Gregersen 2015 Alp Horoz 2010 Joshua Graves Steve Herdoiza Mihir Kumar 1991 Marc Eisen Alex Pasareanu Tobias Reitz Timothy Junker Sam Shropshire, Eric Spector 1992 Marc Eisen Alberto Zanotti 2011 Joshua Graves Steve Herdoiza 2016 Fedor Baev Tobias Reitz Anthony Roy Alp Horoz Eric Spector 1993 Marc Eisen Mihir Kumar 2012 Sidarth Balaji Timothy Junker Sam Shropshire Joshua Graves Anthony Roy Konrad Zieba Nikhil Jayashank 1994 Jamie DeYoung 2017 Jason Seidman Timothy Junker Sam Shropshire Rafael Rizo-Patron Ben Vandixhorn Carl von Schantz Konrad Zieba Douglas Williams 2018 Chris Ephron 1995 Martin Stigh Jason Seidman Carl von Schantz Dominik Stary 1996 Richard Preschern Ben Vandixhorn 1997 Richard Preschern 2019 Johannes Abrahamsen 1998 Martin Bengtsson Chris Ephron Brian Moss Antonioni Fasano 1999 Martin Bengtsson AJ Joshi Brian Moss Michael Lorenzini 2001 Russell Bennett Jason Seidman Brad Erickson Dominik Stary 2002 Russell Bennett Ben Vandixhorn Joost Hol Ahmed Wahla 2003 Russell Bennett Justin Hoeveler Ahmed Wahla 2004 Justin Hoeveler Ahmed Wahla 2005 Matt Christian Jamie Friedland, Justin Hoeveler Christian Tempke 2006 Adam Schaechterle Matt Christian Christian Tempke 2007 Matt Christian Marc Dwyer Christian Tempke 2008 Marc Dwyer Alex Sanborn 2009 Marc Dwyer Philip Kafka Andrew McCarthy Peter Rispoli Alex Sanborn Alexander Thams 2010 Josh Graves Andrew McCarthy Tobias Reitz Alex Sanborn Eric Spector Paul Torricelli 2011 Sidarth Balaji Josh Graves, Head coach Paul Torricelli served as t the Eric Spector head coach for the ‘Cats from 1984 until 2007, the second longest tenure in NU history. HEAD COACH ARVID SWAN Two-time ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year Arvid Swan begins his 13th year at the helm of Northwestern University’s men’s tennis program for the 2019-20 season. He has compiled a 196-144 record over his first twelve seasons, including a program-record 26 wins in 2016 and five straight 20-win seasons from 2012-17. His tenure in Evanston has included seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including six consecutive trips from 2013-17. Swan came to Northwestern after spending the 2006-07 season as the head men’s tennis coach at DePaul University. His coaching efforts helped the program turn a corner, posting an 18-7 record to follow up their 8-14 mark the previous season. Prior to taking the position at DePaul, Swan served as associate head coach for the Wildcats from 2003-06. During that period, Swan helped the program consistently improve as the Wildcats jumped from sixth in the Big Ten to back-to-back fourth-place conference finishes. He also helped lead the team to two top-40 national rankings, back-to-back appearances in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2006. In his playing days, Swan was world-ranked professionally in singles and doubles. While at Michigan, Swan was the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete award in 1995 and earned his way onto three Academic All-Big Ten teams from 1996-98. In 1996, Swan was elected to the All- Big Ten team as the Wolverines went on to win the Big Ten championship. Swan captained the squad until his graduation in 1998.
