Despite being a well-known taxonomic group there is still a paucity of data for most seabird species on many of the Caribbean islands. We carried out detailed surveys of the seabird breeding populations in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) during the breeding seasons of 2004 and 2005. We surveyed 42 different islands and cays over the 2 yr with 60 and 63% of these having at least one breeding seabird species in 2004 and 2005, respectively. A total of 15 spe- cies of breeding seabird was recorded, one of which, the gull-billed tern Sterna nilotica, was pre- viously thought to have been extirpated. Two species, roseate tern Sterna dougallii and magnificent frigatebird Fregata magnificens, had globally significant colonies in the BVI and a further 8 species had a regionally significant population in the BVI. We discuss our findings within a global and regional conservation context and provide recommendations for ensuring the continued existence of BVI seabird populations.

Settle down on board and have a full yacht briefing. The welcome meeting and flotilla briefing is next morning. Sun - Norman Island (10 nm) - After the Morning welcome briefing, enjoy a great broad reach across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Norman Island. Cocktail hour at the famous Willy T’s ship in the bight is not to be missed, after the Seafarer Punch Party, of course! Mon - Peter Island (8 nm) - Our destination today is the wonderfully named Dead Man’s bay on Peter Island. Stop for some snorkelling at the Indians or explore the caves in Privateer Bay.     14-Day BVI Suggested Sailing Itinerary Day 1 A short reach across the Sir Francis Drake Channel arrive at The Bight, Norman Island, rumoured to be the site of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, “Treasure Island”. There’s time for a swim or snorkel at the Indians before watching a spectacular Caribbean sunset while enjoying a sundowner. Visit either the Pirates Bight ashore, or the floating bar/restaurant the William Thornton – each serving great food and offering the utmost in casual dining. Day 2 After breakfast, take your dinghy over (or the yacht) to The Caves. Pick up a National Park buoy and enjoy the wonders of the coral reef and its colourful inhabitants (don’t forget to look for treasure!). Sail to Cooper Island and arrive early enough to pick up an overnight mooring buoy (no anchoring here please). Time for more snorkeling off Cistern Point, or while away the afternoon lounging on the beach. Day 3 Sail to The Baths (get there early) and pick up a buoy – plan to spend the morning here and have lunch. Dinghy ashore and explore the magnificent boulders and rock pools created by Mother Nature millions of years ago. This has got to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. After lunch, sail to Trellis Bay to spend the night – there are many places to go ashore or plan to BBQ on board your yacht. Trellis Bay has full moon parties every month – not to be missed! You can also visit the home of the Caribbean Arts & Crafts Festival, Aragorn’s Studio, and pick up some superb local arts and crafts.
