Steal- ing plots was not uncommon between rival opera houses and the librettist, Salvadore Cammarano, was accused St. Blaise Day by Maia Robinson There is not too much known about St. Blaise, but we do know that he is the patron Saint of throat dis- eases, animals, wool combers and wool trading. St. Blaise was born in Sivas, Turkey and he died in the year 316. His feast day is February 3. People often turned to St. Blaise for healing miracles. In 316, St. Blaise was arrested for his faith by the Governor of Cap- padocia and of Lesser Armeni. On the way to jail, a woman set her only son by St. Blaise’s feet. Her son was choking to death. St. Blaise cured the child and even though the Governor was amazed by this, he could not get St. Blaise to give up his faith. There- fore, the Governor beat St. Blaise with a stick and tore out his skin with iron combs before finally cutting off his head. In another version, while St. Blaise was being lead to prison, the group came upon a woman whose pig had been taken by a wolf. St. Blaise told the wolf to come back with the pig and the wolf returned with the pig who had not been hurt at all. The woman brought St. Blaise two beautiful fine wax candles with hopes of brightening up his dark cell. St. Blaise is often shown holding two crossed candles in his hand or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The blessing of St. Blaise is a cer- emony still practiced and celebrated on his feast day in many places. Two candles are consecrated and crossed and then touched to the throats of the faithful. This blessing may be ad- ministered by a priest, a deacon, or a lay minister. Editor’s note: Maia is a third grader at St. Francis Borgia Catholic School, Cedarburg, WI.
