Diagnostic Features Body oval, rather deep. Mout small. Snout as long as or shorter than eye; lower eye a little in advance of upper; interorbital ridge high, narrow, naked or with a few rudimentary scales; postocular ridge inconspicuous, with an irregular series of rugose areas; similar but less developed rugose areas on blind side of head in the same region. Maxillary extending to below anterior edge of eye or not quite as far. Teeth close-set, but not forming a continuous cutting edge. Gillrakers rather short and broad, with sharply pointed tips; 6 to 8 on lower part of anterior arch. Scales more or less embedded anteriorly, imbricated posteriorly, ctenoid or cycloid on ocular side, the ctenoid scales being developed chiefly on head and posterior part of body, cycloid or feebly ctenoid on blind side. Lateral line with 68 to 82 scales.
Geographical Distribution

Habitat and Biology Benthic, lives mainly on sandy bottoms,from a few meters to about 50 m.Feeds mainly on crustaceans, molluscs, worms and small fishes.
Size Attains to 52 cm.
Interest to Fisheries Comercial fisheries and gamefish. Caught with bottom trawls. The most common fishing techniques are "demersal bottom trawling" and "small flatfish (flounders, soles) bottom trawling". The total catch reported for this species to FAO for 1999 was 19 569 t. The countries with the largest catches were Korea, Republic of (19 569 t).
