Aralia elata Materials and methods: Based on the State Pharmacopoeia of the USSR (11th edition), we selected plant Bergenia crassifolia species that have not yet been adopted in Western and Central Europe (e.g., selected for inclusion in the Bidens tripartita European Pharmacopoeia) and systematically searched the scientific literature for data using library Gnaphalium uliginosum Inonotus obliquus catalogs, the online service E-library.ru, and databases such as Medline/Pubmed, Scopus, and the Web of Tussilago farfara Science regarding species, effectiveness, pharmacological effects, and safety. Results: The Russian Federation follows the State Pharmacopoeia of the USSR (11th edition), which contains 83 individual plant monographs. Fifty-one of these plants are also found in the European Pharmacopoeia and have been well studied, but 32 plants are found only in the Pharmacopoeia of the USSR. Many articles about these medicinal plants were never translated in English, and much of the information collected by Russian scientists has never been made available to the international community. Such knowledge can be applied in future studies aimed at a safe, evidence-based use of traditional Russian medicinal plants in European and global phytopharmacotherapy as well as for the discovery of novel leads for drug development. Conclusion: The review highlights the therapeutic potential of these Russian phytopharmaceuticals but also highlights cases where concern has been raised about product safety and tolerability, which would aid in supporting their safe use. & 2014 The Authors. To address this deficiency, we used high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray triple quadrupole mass detection for comparative qualitative and quantitative analysis of the metabolic profiles of Rhodiola rosea organs before and after gastrointestinal digestion in simulated conditions together with various biochemical assays to determine antioxidant properties of the extracts and selected compounds. R. rosea organs showed 146 compounds, including galloyl O-glucosides, catechins, procyanidins, simple phenolics, phenethyl alcohol derivatives, (hydroxy)cinnamates, hydroxynitrile glucosides, monoterpene O-glucosides, and flavonol O-glycosides, most of them for the first time in the species.

Oleo Sci. 62, (6) 391-401 (2013) Structure-activity Relationships for Bergenin Analogues as β-Secretase (BACE1) Inhibitors Yusei Kashima and Mitsuo Miyazawa* Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Kinki University (3-4-1, Kowakae, Higashiosaka-shi, Osaka 577-8502, JAPAN) Abstract: Here we evaluated the inhibitory effects of bergenin analogues (2-10), prepared from naturally occurring bergenin, (1) on β-secretase (BACE1) activity. All the bergenin analogues that were analyzed inhibited BACE1 in a dose-dependent manner. 11-O-protocatechuoylbergenin (5) was the most potent inhibitor, with an IC50 value of 0.6 ± 0.07 mM. The other bergenin analogues, in particular, 11-O-3′,4′- dimethoxybenzoyl)-bergenin (6), 11-O-vanilloylbergenin (7), and 11-O-isovanilloylbergenin (8), inhibited BACE1 activity with IC50 values of <10.0 mM. BACE1 inhibitory activity was influenced by the substituents of the benzoic acid moiety. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the structure-activity relationships (SAR) in the BACE1 inhibitory activities of bergenin analogues. These bergenin analogues may be useful in studying the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. Croat., Vol. 7, No. 3., 227¿274, 1998, Zagreb Researching the vascular flora of the Po`ega Valley and the surrounding mountains, alto- gether 1467 plant taxa were recorded. An analysis was made of which floral elements particular plant taxa belonged to, as well as an analysis of the life forms. In the vegetation cover of this area plants of the Eurasian floral element as well as European plants represent the major propor- tion. This shows that in the phytogeographical aspect this area belongs to the Eurosiberian- Northamerican region. According to life forms, vascular plants are distributed in the following numbers: H=650, T=355, G=148, P=209, Ch=70, Hy=33. Ward, PHD,# Raymond Niaura, PHD¶ Los Angeles, California; Coral Gables, Florida; Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; Newark, Delaware; and Memphis, Tennessee Objectives This study investigated whether anxiety characteristics independently predicted the onset of myocardial infarc- tion (MI) over an average of 12.4 years and whether this relationship was independent of other psychologic vari- ables and risk factors. Background Although several psychosocial factors have been associated with risk for MI, anxiety has not been examined ex- tensively. Earlier studies also rarely addressed whether the association between a psychologic variable and MI was specific and independent of other psychosocial correlates. Methods Participants were 735 older men (mean age 60 years) without a history of coronary disease or diabetes at base- line from the Normative Aging Study. Anxiety characteristics were assessed with 4 scales (psychasthenia, social introversion, phobia, and manifest anxiety) and an overall anxiety factor derived from these scales. Results Anxiety characteristics independently and prospectively predicted MI incidence after controlling for age, educa- tion, marital status, fasting glucose, body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure in proportional hazards models.

S. chinensis fruit extracts and their active compounds are potent antioxidants and mitoprotectors exerting anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti- cancer, and anti-aging effects. S. chinensis polyphenolic compounds—flavonoids, phenolic acids and the major constituents dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans are responsible for the S. chinensis antioxidant activities. This review will focus on the direct and indirect antioxidant effects of S. chinensis fruit extract and its bioactive compounds in the cells during normal and pathological conditions.
