How to get from the major airports to Jönköping

NB: About going by train: In principle the state-owned train company, Statens Järnvägar (SJ), operates the main railways in southern . Prices for train tickets are not available until 90 days before the journey. It is difficult to predict the price at this point, but the following information will hopefully give you some clues. The current timetable is valid until 29 June. This means that you cannot book your train journey today. The timetable to look at is Table no 80, which is the main railway line between and Malmö/, there you will also find times for the side- line from Nässjö to Jönköping. www.sj.se has information in English, click on the British flag in the upper right corner. If you are a pensioner (65+) or a youth under 26 years of age, you can get a last minute ticket for the lowest price, but only if it is purchased less than 24 hours before the journey. It can be purchased at the train station (or on the internet). On the website there is also a Best buy calendar, which gives the lowest price for today and maybe a week from now (it is updated continuously). You don’t gain anything by buying a return ticket, so all prices are for single tickets. Train tickets are personal so you will probably be asked to give your name when you buy the ticket (but I don’t know if it applies when you buy your ticket abroad.) How long the journey takes usually depends on what time of the day you travel and if there are one or two changes. On most trains they give information in English on the intercom.

About going by bus: Travelling time is usually longer than by train. There are two major bus companies, Swebus and Bus4You/GoByGus. Swebus has more frequent departures, whereas Bus4You has more comfortable seats and makes fewer stops on the way between Stockholm and Jönköping. From Kastrup/Copenhagen GoByBus travels to Jönköping via . Swebus (www.swebus.se) has information in English and German on their website while Bus4You (www.bus4you.se) and GoByBus (www.gobybus.se) do not. Timetables for August are not yet available in either company. Special rates for students and pensioners are available (about 50 SEK single ticket). Please note, that you cannot buy any ticket on the bus, you have to buy at the airport or via Internet.

About going by air: There may be some changes as regards what flight companies that will operate the routes from Copenhagen and Stockholm. Today operators are Nextjet, Flyglinjen, and SAS. There are also occasional flights to and from Brussels and other locations. Ryan Air flies to Barcelona. Please consult the airport’s website (www.jonkopingairport.se) for updated information.

A. Københavns lufthavn/Kastrup (Copenhagen)

1. By train with one change (at NÄSSJÖ) or two changes (at MALMÖ and NÄSSJÖ) takes 4 to 5 hours Today the price can be anything between 195 and 750 SEK (22,50 – 86 € today), depending on departure.

1

2. By bus (Swebus) with one change (either at MALMÖ or GOTHENBURG) The bus does not depart from the airport, so you have to get to the bus terminal in town. It takes anything between 5 and 8 hours depending on departure and route. (I have no experience myself of this trip.) GoByBus has one departure per day from Kastrup, but this could change in the summer when people travel more (see above).

Today the price is 300 - 400 SEK (34 – 46 €).

3. By air Nextjet, SAS, or Flyglinjen depending on the time of the day. Nextjet and Flyglinjen are direct flights, SAS flies via Stockholm (so I don’t see the point). The cheapest ticket is 1800 SEK (207 €), but this could perhaps be cheaper if it is combined with the ticket from your destination. Direct flight takes less than one hour.

4. By car You can rent a car at Kastrup, not far from the bridge to Malmö; from Malmö you will find a road that connects you to E4, which then will take you direct to Jönköping. The road is quite good but there is a lot of traffic, including big trucks and lorries. The trip takes about 4-5 hours if you make a stop. Speed limits are 90 – 120 km/h, if there is no roadwork.

B. Stockholm Arlanda Airport

1. By train with one change (at NÄSSJÖ) or two changes (at STOCKHOLM and NÄSSJÖ) takes 4 – 6 hours Today’s price is between 175 and 543 SEK (20 - 63 €).

2. By bus on Swebus Express with one change (at Stockholm City Terminal) or direct (Bus no 830), takes between 4 and 6 hours and costs 300 – 400 SEK (34 – 46 €) today. Bus4You/GoByBus are a little cheaper and take 4 – 4,5 hours. However, they have very few departures, and you have to start by taking the airport bus (Flygbussarna) from Arlanda to Stockholm City Terminal, where all buses depart from.

3. By air Nextjet or SAS (or co-operators) from Stockholm; the flight takes less than an hour and costs about 1300 SEK (149 €). Again, it could be cheaper to get a connection with your flight to Stockholm; at least SAS is a partner of Star Alliance.

4. By car You can rent a car at Arlanda; from there you will easily find a main road that connects you with E4, which in turn takes you to Jönköping in about 4-5 hours. It’s a road with heavy traffic, speed limits 90 – 120 km/h.

C. Göteborg Landvetter Airport (Gothenburg)

Landvetter is actually the closest international airport to Jönköping (Jönköping Airport is a regional one), only two hours away, and the connections are getting better.

2 1. By bus The easiest way to get to Jönköping from Landvetter is by Swebus (less than two hours and about 200 SEK (23 €).

2. By car You can of course rent a car; that will also take about two hours. Road 40 goes to Jönköping, it is partly narrow and has very heavy traffic.

3. By train It’s a bit complicated but if you are in for some adventure in a foreign country, this is an option. Take an airport bus (Flygbussarna) to the Nils Ericsson Terminal in Göteborg, next door to the railway station. Both SJ and Västtågen have several departures to Jönköping every day, direct or with change(s).

4. By air Yes, there is a line between Landvetter and Jönköping; it takes half an hour. Please look at the airport information on the Internet, as this might change before August (for Landvetter: www.swedavia.se/landvetter and for Jönköping: www.jonkopingairport.se)

D. Stockholm – Skavsta

The Swedish ‘hub’ for Ryan Air is Skavsta, 100 km south of Stockholm. You can get from Skavsta to Jönköping in the following way: Take an airport bus (Flygbussarna) to Linköping; from there you take a bus (e.g., Swebus) to Jönköping. If this is an option for you, please contact me later and I will try to find out more.

This is as far as I can get today: It will also be possible for you to contact our conference agency, Destination Jönköping, as they have promised to assist us on this matter. There is also information on the different websites that I have mentioned above.

I hope you will find the information useful.

We look forward to seeing you all in Jönköping!

Ulla-Britt
