Four freshmen join the Gators in 2021. Chloi Clark (Denver, Colo.), Gabrielle Gallentine (Iron Station, N.C.) and Ellie Lazzari (Wheaton, Ill.) all competed at Junior Olympics Level 10 National Championships. Lazzari won 2019 J.O. Junior F all-around, beam and floor titles. Gallentine took third in 2017 J.O. Junior B all-around and Clark tied for fourth in 2019 J.O. Senior B vault competition. Both Gallentine and Lazzari competed as Junior International Elites. Alex Magee was third on bars and fourth in both all-around and floor in 2019 Florida L10 State Championships.

The COVID-19 pandemic ended the opportunity for this class to compete for team titles at the SEC and NCAA Championships.

Florida started home action with a 197.25 – 196.075 win over No. 7 Georgia in front of a sold-out reduced capacity Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 2,203. TONIGHT’S MEET th th Florida trailed the Tigers by 0.05 after the opening rotation. Florida tallied a 49.30 on her collegiate career with a season-best 9.925. the event. Half the Gator lineup posted floor exercise marks of 9.9 or better. Nya Reed upped her collegiate-best to a Four balance beam marks of 9.90 or better – including winning marks of 9.95 by Thomas and Lazzari – near perfect 9.975 for her first floor title since 2019. Senior Alyssa Baumann shared second at 9.925 with helped Florida post a meet-high event total of 49.60. Senior Alyssa Baumann took third at 9.925 and junior her GymDog sister, Rachel Baumann. Gator junior Sydney Johnson-Scharpf’s 9.90 on floor is a season Sydney Johnson-Scharpf earned a 9.90. best.

Thomas’ four event titles included upping the Gators’ season opening all-around total best to 39.75. Georgia’s Haley de Jong claimed the all-around win at 39.17, just edging teammate Megan Roberts (39.15). Thomas took third at 38.90. GATOR PERFORMANCE NOTES:  Florida’s 197.50 is its all-time high in a season opener. The previous high of o 9.925 was set by Johnson-Scharpf versus LSU.  With her two event wins Friday, Thomas moves into sole possession of ninth on Florida’s Career Events Titles list. She now owns 60 events titles. Ten more titles moves her into a tie  Six marks tonight by UF returners equaled or set collegiate bests: for seventh with Ashanée Dickerson and Ann Woods. o Leah Clapper – 9.875 (bars), 9.70 (floor)  Reed is the nation’s third gymnast this season with a 9.975 or better floor mark. She set the previous high of 39.70 with her 2020 win versus Arkansas and raised it to 39.75 tonight at RECORDS: Florida (2-0, 1-0 SEC), Georgia (1-1, 0-1 SEC) Auburn. THE SERIES: Georgia leads the series 93-60-1.  Two freshmen made their first appearances in a collegiate lineup tonight – Gabrielle Gallentine (bars), Ellie Lazzari (vault, bars, beam).
